Fitness tracker Strava reveals names, locations, heart rates

I’m currently looking at heatmaps showing the exercise paths of soldiers on live military bases around the world. I’m able to do this thanks to the fitness social network Strava. Much like a soldier sharing photos of their base on Facebook, Strava shows the paths they run on every day. Strava shows this information because these soldiers shared this information … Continue reading

Original Nokia 6 Oreo Update Rolling Out Now

HMD Global recently released the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the new iteration of the Nokia 6 that was launched earlier this month. It said at that time that it’s going to release the Oreo update for the original Nokia 6 in the near future as well. That day is today. The original Nokia 6 is now receiving its Android 8.0 Oreo update.

The original Nokia 6 handset bearing model number TA-1000 is now receiving the Android 8.0 Oreo update in China. HMD Global, the Finland-based company that makes these Nokia-branded handsets, has made good on its promise to have the update out for this device soon.

The stable version of Android 8.0 Oreo for the original Nokia 6 follows the release of the Oreo update for the Nokia 6 (2018) and the Nokia 7 earlier this month. Both handsets are yet to be released out of China and HMD Global hasn’t confirmed when these handsets will make their way to other markets.

Android 8.0 Oreo brings several major features to the handset as it is a major platform update after all. Users will get features like picture-in-picture mode, integrated Instant Apps, user interface optimizations, and more. There may be some China-specific customizations as well.

Those who own an original Nokia 6 in China can now keep an eye out for the update notification as it will be arriving soon if it hasn’t already.

Altice Integrates Netflix With Its New Set-Top Box

Altice today announced that it’s expanding its new Altice One set-top box across the full Optimum footprint. The new set-top box features seamless access to the Netflix service. It’s the latest cable operator in the country to team up with Netflix, we’ve previously seen Comcast integrated Netflix with its Xfinity X1 set-top box. Comcast happens to be the biggest cable provider in the United States.

Altice first announced its Altice One set-top box last year. The set-top box was first made available to new customers on Long Island. The company has announced today that the Altice One is now available across its entire Optimum service footprint.

The set-top box provides users with an all-in-one UHD video, high-speed broadband as well as a Wi-Fi and IP phone experience in a single compact home hub. It replaces the traditional cable box, modem, and router. The cloud-based platform has a personalized user interface with fully integrated access to live TV, video on demand, and streaming apps such as Netflix. It also supports other apps like Pandora and YouTube.

Netflix subscribers who pick up an Altice One will now be able to easily access their favorite shows and movies streaming on Netflix directly on the Altice One. No need for a smart TV or a streaming media device like a Chromecast. The upcoming Altice One remote control will also feature a Netflix direct access button so that subscribers can quickly gain access to the streaming service.

Japan Gets Tougher On All Crypto Exchanges After Coincheck Hack

One of Japan’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges reported last week that it had been hit by a hack that resulted in the loss of $530 million worth of NEM coins. It’s one of the biggest security incidents of its kind so far this year and Japan now wants to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen to any other exchange based in the country. Japan’s Financial Services Agency is going to inspect all other cryptocurrency exchanges.

The country’s financial regulator has also sanctioned Coincheck to get a hold on things and ordered it to make improvements. Coincheck suspended trading in all cryptocurrencies except Bitcoin on Friday. Coincheck has been ordered by the regulator to submit a report on the hack and detail measures for preventing something like this from happening again by February 13th.

If necessary, the regulator will also conduct on-site inspections of other cryptocurrency exchanges registered in Japan. Exchange operators in Tokyo feel that the massive Coincheck hack will lead to growing concerns about security among consumers and this might potentially put pressure on the price of cryptocurrencies.

Coincheck announced over the weekend that it would refund customers impacted by this hack with $400 million out of its own funds but it hasn’t detailed as yet how and when it’s going to do that. Japan’s FSA hasn’t confirmed if Coincheck has sufficient funds to reimburse all affected customers.
