2018 Macs Might Feature ARM Coprocessors

Apple is expected to launch new Macs later this year and if a new report is to be believed, the 2018 Macs might feature an ARM coprocessor for increased security. The company is said to be working on at least three new Mac models which will feature an ARM coprocessor. It’s pertinent to mention here that Apple isn’t shifting to ARM processors completely for Macs, these models will retain their primary Intel chips.

These coprocessors will reportedly be similar to the T2 and T1 chips in the iMac Pro and the 2016 MacBook Pro respectively. The report doesn’t mention which product lines will be getting this new coprocessor, only that at least three models are being developed with Apple-designed chips and that they include two laptops and a new desktop.

Given that the T2 coprocessor is already present in the iMac Pro, it’s possible that the desktop mentioned in this report is the Mac Pro. However, one cannot rule out a refreshed model of the iMac that could feature a new ARM coprocessor as well.

The T1 chip currently used in the MacBook Pro is responsible for managing the Touch Bar and Touch ID components as well as the Secure Enclave. The iMac Pro’s chip goes one step further as it secures the OS with Secure Boot, works as the image signal processor for the FaceTime camera, and performs a couple of other functions as well.

Bloomberg’s report mentions that two laptop models will receive a new ARM coprocessor this year, so perhaps we might see a new 12 inch MacBook and a new MacBook Air, but there’s no indication as yet about any planned updates for the MacBook Air.

More information about this might come up if Apple is really planning on doing this. Apple hasn’t commented on this report.

Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition Release Date Possibly Revealed

If the date mentioned in a new App Store listing is anything to go by, it appears that the Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition release date has been revealed. The mobile iteration of this popular PC and console game could be out by next month if the release date mentioned in the App Store listing is accurate. A listing for the game went live on the Google Play Store in August last year but it didn’t mention a release date for Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition.

Final Fantasy XV has been very well received by PC and console gamers. While many were skeptical about the mobile version as they felt it was a potential cash grab on Square Enix’s part, some reports suggest that the mobile version holds promise.

The game reportedly stays faithful to the original as far as the battles, characters, and gameplay mechanics are concerned. However, the character design appears to be similar which will enable the title to perform well even on low-powered smartphones.

Square Enix hasn’t confirmed the official Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition release date as yet but this App Store listing mentions that the game is going to be released on February 9th for iOS devices. The Google Play Store listing didn’t provide a release date so it can’t be said for sure right now if it will be released alongside its iOS counterpart on the very same day.

iPhone X Production Reportedly Being Cut In Half

Amid reports that Apple might discontinue the iPhone X as early as this summer, a new report claims that the company has cut iPhone X production in half owing to slow sales. The company has reportedly informed suppliers that it’s cutting iPhone X production for the March quarter by half from the predicted 40 million units to nearly 20 million units.

The Nikkei reported today that Apple saw “slower-than-expected” sales of the iPhone X during the holiday season in key markets like the United States, Europe, and China. The report also mentions that Apple has a combined production target of 30 million units for the existing iPhone models which include the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 8.

Apple traditionally cuts production after the holiday season so it’s unclear at this point in time if this production cut is in line with seasonal cuts from previous years or if this specific to the iPhone X.

The price is mentioned in most reports as the reason why sales have been below expectations for Apple. The argument makes sense, given that the iPhone X is the most expensive iPhone the company has ever released, with the base model starting at $999.

Apple doesn’t comment on supply chain reports so we can’t expect the company to respond to reports that it has cut iPhone X production by half for its flagship smartphone.
