Western US To Experience GPS Disruptions Due To USAF GPS Jamming Tests

Image credit – US Air Force

If you rely on GPS heavily for things like work, research, or school, then you might want to take note that over the course of the next couple of weeks, the US Air Force will be conducting combat tests in the western US which will involve the jamming of GPS, resulting in GPS being disrupted temporarily.

According to a report from Flying.com, “The NBAA Command Center reports the U.S. military will begin training exercises on the Nevada Test and Training Range between 0400Z until 0700Z daily. Training maneuvers will impact vast portions of the Western U.S. including California, Nevada, Oregon, Wyoming, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Montana and New Mexico. FAA enroute ATC centers affected include Albuquerque (ZAB), Denver (ZDV), Los Angeles (ZLA), Salt Lake (ZLC), Oakland (ZOA) and Seattle (ZSE).”

The idea behind the GPS jamming is meant to simulate combat situations where the USAF might encounter situations where their GPS no longer works. As The Drive points out, countries such as Russia are incorporating tactics that involve GPS spoofing and jamming which could severely impact the effectiveness during combat, which is why this training is taking place to prepare pilots for such situations and how to deal with them.

So if you do live in the western part of the US, don’t be surprised if you’re hit with GPS disruptions over the course of the next couple of weeks.

Street Fighter’s Ryu, Sakura Coming To Monster Hunter: World

The other day Capcom announced that Monster Hunter-themed costumes would be coming to Street Fighter as part of the celebration of the launch of Monster Hunter: World. Now it looks like the opposite is happening, where it looks like Street Fighter characters will be coming to Monster Hunter: World.

In an announcement by Capcom, it looks like two of Street Fighter’s more popular/recognizable characters Ryu and Sakura will be making their way into Monster Hunter: World. However we should note that these are basically armor sets that when fully equipped will make characters look like either Ryu or Sakura, and can be worn by either male or female hunters with appropriate voice acting to match Ryu or Sakura.

According to Capcom, “In just a few weeks, we’ll be featuring the quest to get Ryu’s set as an exclusive early opportunity to PS4 players that also have a save data file from Street Fighter V (including Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition). Hunters with that save data will receive a special quest called ‘Down the Dark, Muddy Path.’ Just channel your fighting spirit, complete that quest and you’ll get ‘SFV Tickets’ as the special reward item. Bring that, along with other necessary materials, to the Smithy and you got yourself a Ryu armor set!”

Capcom has also announced that there will be “premium gestures” in the game which lets players mimic the Hadouken and Shoryuken moves. These are sold separately and are priced at $3.99 each. Gamers who are interested in seeing the “crossover” can check out the trailer above.

Facebook Looking To Give Chatbots A ‘Consistent Personality’

When chatting with chatbots, the idea isn’t so much to have a conversation but to fulfill a purpose, such as asking about restaurant table availability, booking a flight, checking on information, and so on. The goal is that these requests can be made using more “natural” language, which means that it feels less robotic.

However we have to admit that chatbots for the most part still feel plenty robotic, but that’s something Facebook hopes to change. In a recently published paper by researchers at Facebook’s FAIR lab (via The Verge), the researchers are hoping to solve some of the problems with chatbots, such as by giving them a “consistent personality”, as well as making them remember conversations that they might have had with you several sentences ago.

To do this, Facebook’s engineers built their own dataset which they will use to train chatbots called “Persona-Chat”, and it will consist of 160,000 lines of dialogue that has been sourced from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk marketplace, ultimately giving these chatbots a “personality” that will make interacting with them more dynamic and less robotic.

Of course whether or not this is necessary, and whether or not it will actually be applied to chatbots being used by Facebook right now remains to be seen, but if anything we guess this brings us closer to what we’re seeing in the movies, where AI can have personalities or their own that makes interacting with them feel more natural.

Artist Denies New ‘God Of War’ Has Received Graphical Downgrades

The thing about trailers is that they are meant to hype up the release of a movie or game, and sometimes what people find out is that the actual product is very different from its trailer. In video games what can happen is that the trailer is made to look better than the actual game, resulting in players sometimes feeling a bit cheated.

This is one of the controversies that Sony’s upcoming God of War is facing at the moment, where there are some who claim that the footage taken from its E3 reveal looks very different compared to the trailer and screenshots that was released not too long ago. However this is something that artist/designer Raf Grassetti is denying on Twitter (via JustPushStart).

Grassetti is a designer that worked on the game and according to his tweets which have been translated, “What has changed is just the direction of light and fog, the content is the same as the E3 trailer, but different context, you will understand when you play. The Jormungandr, Kratos and Atreus continue exactly like the trailer  are comparing with other scenes and lights. I’m laughing seeing the comments :)”

Hopefully this will appease the critics, but regardless it still seems like the game looks fantastic anyway. In the meantime Sony has confirmed that the upcoming God of War for the PS4 will be released on the 20th of April.

Elon Musk Is Now Selling Flamethrowers

Elon Musk continues to make the world a better place. The latest way that he’s doing this? Flamethrowers. After weeks of teases, Elon Musk has confirmed that his tunnel-drilling company The Boring Company is selling a flamethrower for the likes of you and me.

There are 20,000 of these weapons for sale. And yes, they are actually legal. Musk says the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms allows throwers with flames shorter than 10 feet, so this one is perfect. Thank you Elon Musk, for putting a legal firestick in my hands. I promise to try very very hard to stay out of trouble. We are talking fire though, so we will see.

It is being called the “world’s safest” flamethrower. But if you still have your doubts, there’s also a branded fire extinguisher available for $30. A pre-order will set you back $500.

Musk did say that he would sell a flamethrower when Boring Company hats sold out, and it looks like he is keeping his word. I don’t think anyone took him seriously when he made that comment, but here we are. Flamethrowers! Or as I like to call it, a $500 dollar grill starter. So who else is getting one of these bad boys?
