Harley-Davidson To Launch Its First Electric Motorcycle

Harley-Davidson is an iconic American motorcycle manufacturer that has a very passionate customer base. Four years after unveiling its LiveWire project which was an all-electric motorcycle prototype used in the Avengers movie series, the company has finally confirmed that it’s going to launch its first all-electric motorcycle in the not too distant future. The company made this confirmation during a routine earnings call.

“You’ve heard us talk about Project LiveWire,” said President and CEO of Harley-Davidson Matt Levatich during the company’s earnings, adding that “It’s an active project we’re preparing to bring to market within 18 months.”

The company didn’t specifically confirm if its first all-electric motorcycle will be based on the LiveWire project or if it’s going to be a completely new platform. It also didn’t reveal what this bike is going to be called.

If it’s anything like the LiveWire project, the new motorcycle will have a range of nearly 50 miles while being able to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in four seconds. No technical specifications have been shared as well so it’s unclear right now just how capable of this motorcycle is going to be.

It remains to be seen how the company’s fans receive its first all-electric bike. Harley-Davidson is committed to adding all-electric models to its lineup. The company’s CFO John Olin said that it’s going to spend $25-$50 million per year over the coming years to electric motorcycle technology. Harley-Davidson wants to be the global leader in the electric motorcycle market.

Galaxy S8 Oreo Update Will Be Released For Beta Users A Day Early

Samsung launched a beta program for the Galaxy S8 Oreo update last year. It has released several beta firmware since then and while the company is yet to confirm when the final public release is going to take place, it has revealed that the Galaxy S8 Oreo update is going to be released a day early for those who participated in the beta program.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners have long been waiting for the Android 8.0 Oreo update to arrive. They’re going to be the first Samsung smartphones to receive the Oreo update. Fans are getting anxious because until these handsets don’t receive the update, Samsung won’t release Oreo for any other compatible handset in its lineup.

The Galaxy S8 Oreo update beta program has ended already and while the update was expected to be released to the public before the end of January, that hasn’t happened as yet. There has been no update from Samsung regarding the public release date of Android 8.0 for the Galaxy S8.

According to a notice posted in the Samsung Members app for participants of the beta program, Samsung says that it will release the official Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 one day early for those who participated in the program.

With January almost over now, one can only hope that Samsung will release Oreo for the Galaxy S8 sooner rather than later.

AMD Addresses GPU Shortage By Ramping Up Production

PC enthusiasts and gamers have been irked by the state of GPU supply in the market as this crucial component has been difficult to get a hold off. If they do become available, they’re overpriced and thus difficult to acquire for many customers. AMD is aware of the supply issues with its Radeon graphics cards and the company says that its ramping up production to meet demand.

Incredibly high demand for GPUs isn’t a problem that just AMD is facing. Its main rival NVIDIA is having to deal with high demand as well since the past year because not only do gamers need GPUs, but there’s a whole new segment of consumers who use graphic cards for mining cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ethereum. NVIDIA has even urged retailers to sell GPUs to gamers and not miners.

Take AMD’s RX Vega series of new GPUs that the company launched in August last year. They’ve basically been sold out since then. The custom models that use those GPUs are reportedly impossible to get a hold off as well.

AMD CEO and president Dr. Lisa Su acknowledged during the investor call to discuss the company’s Q4 results that the cryptocurrency mining market is “consuming a lot of GPUs,” and that this demand has become a good part of AMD’s business. However, Dr. Su said that the major chunk of sales growth that AMD reported in graphics card came from outside the blockchain market.

She added that since the availability of graphics cards is lower than what the company would like it to be, it’s ramping up production. She also clarified that the supply shortage is not due to unavailability of silicon. AMD is having to deal with shortages in the GDDR5 and HBM2 memory markets and it will continue to work with its memory partners to ensure that AMD can meet rising demand for GPUs.
