Google Assistant Go App Released On Play Store

Google unveiled its Android Go initiative at the I/O developers conference in May last year. It’s a toned-down version of the Android operating system that’s meant for entry-level devices with little RAM. Google promised to release Go-specific versions of some of its key apps and since then we’ve seen a few of them get less memory hungry. The Google Assistant app has now received the same treatment.

Google has now released its Assistant Go app which is available for download from the Play Store starting today. The app has been toned down to function properly on entry-level devices much like the YouTube Go, Google Go, Gboard Go, and Google Maps Go apps before it.

Assistant Go brings the power of Google Assistant to these devices but given that its a toned down version, it can’t do everything that the full app can. For example, English is the only language supported by this app and it doesn’t allow users to control smart home devices, set reminders, and more.

The core functionality is still there, though. Assistant Go can provide answers to questions, launch Maps for navigation, and provide access to a variety of different features on the device in response to voice commands.

Those who have a compatible device can head over to the Google Play Store right now and download Assistant Go for free.

Apple Removes Telegram From App Store

Telegram, a popular encrypted messaging application, is no longer available on the iOS App Store. Apple has removed the main app as well as the new Telegram X app from the App Store. It’s not that the company is opposed to apps like these because Telegram has long been available for iOS devices. Apple seems to have taken this action because some “inappropriate content” was made available to Telegram users on iOS.

This is what Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has said. Telegram was alerted by Apple that inappropriate content was made available to users which is why both Telegram and Telegram X have been removed from the App Store. “Once we have protections in place we expect the apps to be back on the App Store,” Pavel said on Twitter.

Telegram emerged on the scene back in 2013 and quickly gained popularity because it offered end-to-end encryption. Most popular messaging services now offer this level of security but it was a rarity when Telegram was first launched and that’s one of the main reasons why it became popular.

It’s not clear at this point in time what inappropriate content was shown to users which caused Apple to remove both apps. It’s also unclear how long it will take the company to build the protections which will enable its apps to be approved for listing on the App Store again.
