New Report Claims iPhone X Outsold iPhone 8 2-to-1 In The US

Is Apple’s iPhone X doing badly? That’s what seems to be what some are claiming, with reports suggesting that production will be halved. Others claim otherwise, saying that the reports are overstated. Now it looks like according to the latest report from Counterpoint, they claim that the iPhone X is doing well.

According to the report, it seems that based on Q4 2017’s figures, the iPhone X actually outsold the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus by a 2-to-1 ratio. However note that this is just the US market so it is unclear as to how the iPhone X is doing in other markets, although previous reports are claiming that older iPhone models are actually doing better, like how the iPhone 7 Plus is the second best-selling smartphone in China.

We suppose we’ll need to wait for the official Apple figures before we can determine whether or not the handset is a flop. According to Counterpoint’s Research Director Neil Shah, “However, since its launch on Nov. 3, the iPhone X outsold the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus by a 2:1 margin. What this means is the super-premium segment (above $800) has grown from almost 0 percent in previous years to 25 percent share of the total smartphones sold in USA during Q4 2017, which speaks volumes for the potential of USA market and the U.S. consumers’ buying power.”

Apple is expected to officially announce their earnings on the 1st of February (which is today) where hopefully they’ll have the figures that will put the speculation to rest once and for all.

Nintendo Switch Online Set For Launch This September

With the launch of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo is certainly trying some new things, one of which is a paid online gaming service similar to Sony’s PS Plus and Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold.  The service was initially expected for a launch last year, but it was later delayed to 2018 with no specific dates mentioned.

However it looks like we finally have a date to look forward to, and that is September 2018. This was confirmed by the Nintendo of America Twitter account who revealed the timeframe that we can look forward to. Of course this isn’t necessarily a good thing since it means that gamers will need to start paying to use the service, but we guess it’s also good news since it’s been such a long-awaited feature.

For those unfamiliar with the pricing of the Nintendo Switch’s online service, it will be priced at $19.99 a year which is actually pretty affordable. Alternatively gamers can opt to pay month-to-month at a price of $3.99 a month. So far multiplayer on the Switch has been free, but like we said the launch of the service means that gamers will need to start paying if they don’t wish to lose multiplayer functionality.

However in addition to giving players access to multiplayer, the subscription also means that Nintendo will be giving gamers access to classic games from their catalogue, and will include features like leaderboards and multiplayer.

‘Mario Kart Tour’ Will Be Nintendo’s Next Mobile Title

Save for Miitomo (which will be shutting down in May), the rest of Nintendo’s mobile gaming efforts have largely been variants of existing titles, such as Super Mario Run, Animal Crossing, and Fire Emblem. Now it looks like another Nintendo classic will be arriving on mobile in the form of “Mario Kart Tour”.

This was announced by Nintendo earlier and according to the company, is scheduled for a release in the fiscal year ending in March 2019. This means that there is a little more than a year that gamers might have to wait, although hopefully Nintendo doesn’t keep gamers waiting that long. However until we get more specifics, that is the timeframe we can look forward to.

Unfortunately details about the game are scarce at the moment and we have no idea how Mario Kart Tour will play on mobile. However given that previous releases have been variants of existing titles and not an exact replica, chances are this could be the same for Mario Kart Tour as well.

Either way it does sound rather exciting given that Mario Kart is one of Nintendo’s larger franchises. We should also point out that Mario Kart might not be the only major title to be brought onto mobile because a report from The Wall Street Journal in 2017 suggested that Zelda could be next.

Sluggish iPhone X Sales Don’t Worry Samsung

The iPhone X is the first smartphone from Apple to feature an OLED display and since Samsung has a near monopoly in the smartphone OLED panel market, it’s the only supplier that can produce OLED displays at a volume not only for itself but for customers like Apple. Samsung was going to make a lot of money off of the iPhone X as its the sole supplier of OLED displays but even as reports of sluggish iPhone X sales surface, it’s not worried.

A recent report claimed that Apple has cut iPhone X production in half due to sluggish sales. However, some say that the reports about low sales are overblown, an Apple supplier also suggested the same.

Even if sales of the iPhone X are lower than expected, Samsung doesn’t seem to be too worried about missing out on OLED panel sales to Apple.

“It is hard to give specific details, but we have been trying to diversify our clients and reduce reliance on a certain customer to build a healthy portfolio,” a Samsung executive said in a conference call yesterday when asked about the potential impact of lower than expected iPhone X sales.

The executive also added that Samsung’s display business “will not be affected much a certain customer.” Samsung gave its forecast for the first quarter of this year yesterday and the company already expects profits from its AMOLED business to decline in Q1 due to low demand and increased competition.
