NVIDIA SHIELD TV 6.3 update released with no Android Oreo

NVIDIA has always been considered one of the better Android citizens, pushing out updates quickly and frequently, unlike even the most popular smartphone makers. In one aspect, however, it may have just failed its fans. The company just pushed out its SHIELD Experience 6.3 update to the NVIDIA SHIELD Android TVs and while it has a ton of new features … Continue reading

Maps were essential to the exploration of the world. Most of our history books are filled with people who decided to go out into the abyss with just an inkling of what they would find, usually based on incomplete or even nonexistent charts. Uber and…

‘Mario Kart Tour’ Will Be Nintendo’s Next Mobile Title

Save for Miitomo (which will be shutting down in May), the rest of Nintendo’s mobile gaming efforts have largely been variants of existing titles, such as Super Mario Run, Animal Crossing, and Fire Emblem. Now it looks like another Nintendo classic will be arriving on mobile in the form of “Mario Kart Tour”.

This was announced by Nintendo earlier and according to the company, is scheduled for a release in the fiscal year ending in March 2019. This means that there is a little more than a year that gamers might have to wait, although hopefully Nintendo doesn’t keep gamers waiting that long. However until we get more specifics, that is the timeframe we can look forward to.

Unfortunately details about the game are scarce at the moment and we have no idea how Mario Kart Tour will play on mobile. However given that previous releases have been variants of existing titles and not an exact replica, chances are this could be the same for Mario Kart Tour as well.

Either way it does sound rather exciting given that Mario Kart is one of Nintendo’s larger franchises. We should also point out that Mario Kart might not be the only major title to be brought onto mobile because a report from The Wall Street Journal in 2017 suggested that Zelda could be next.

Telegram Launches Experimental ‘Telegram X’ App

There are multiple messaging apps out there that are available for users on smartphones, and Telegram is one of the many. However it looks like Telegram wants to expand its offerings and has recently announced a new experimental app called Telegram X, which for the most part is still Telegram.

So what’s the point, you ask? Basically over years as apps and software in general gets updated, the new features are added on top of the existing features which is basically like putting new code together with old ones. This means that over time it is possible that the app gets bogged down by a lot of unnecessary data and information, getting slower and clunkier in the process.

With Telegram X, the developers are basically challenging themselves to create a new version of Telegram that’s better than the current one, and have built it from scratch using a brand new code base. Telegram notes that Telegram X might not necessarily replace the original Telegram, but at the same time it will let them test out new features and technologies that could be brought over to the main app.

As it stands Telegram X is only available on Android and it is unclear if there are plans to bring it over onto iOS. However oddly enough it has been noted that the Telegram app has mysteriously vanished from the iTunes App Store. Apparently this is a minor issue and should be resolved soon, but at this time of posting the app is still unavailable.

Huawei P20 Could Be Unveiled On March 27 In Paris

According to the rumors, it has been suggested that Huawei’s upcoming flagship, the Huawei P20, might not be unveiled at MWC 2018 which is taking place later this month. It is unclear why, although some claim that Samsung’s plans to announce the Galaxy S9 at the event might have put some of their competitors off.

Now it looks like there is more evidence that those reports were right because it seems that Huawei has recently sent out invites to the press for an event that will be taking place on the 27th of March in Paris. While the company did not explicitly mention what will be announced, apparently new flagship devices will be announced in which the P20 seems to fit the bill perfectly.

That being said while we expect the P20 to pack a ton of the latest hardware and features (and possibly continue their partnership with Leica), it might be a hard sell for Huawei especially in the US. Lawmakers in the US have reportedly been pushing carriers such as AT&T to cut all ties with the Chinese company, and recently it was reported that Verizon’s plans to sell Huawei phones have also been dropped due to pressure from the US government.

We suppose missing out on the US market will be a pretty huge deal for Huawei, although they still have the Chinese market which is by no means a small one.

Waymo’s Self-Driving Cars Have The Lowest Human Driver Takeover Rate

As it stands it is a rule in which all companies that wish to test self-driving cars are required to have a human driver behind the wheel. This is a safety net of sorts where in the event something goes wrong, the human driver can easily takeover control of the car and hopefully steer it to safety.

Now it seems that based on the statistics submitted by Alphabet’s Waymo to the California DMV, it looks like the company has the lowest human driver takeover rates (via 9to5Google) compared to the competition. Waymo also notes that the disengagements are not safety related, and that this is merely the transitioning in and out of autonomous mode.

Based on the numbers that were submitted, Waymo is reporting that from December 2016 to November 2017, there have been a total of 63 disengagements over 352,544.6 miles traveled, where for the most part the number of disengagements were in the single digits save for December 2016 and April 2017.

The Information’s Amir Efrati also compiled a list of the competition and confirmed that Waymo’s disengagement is indeed the lowest at 0.18 disengagements per 1,000 miles in California. Coming in second is GM-back Cruise at 0.8, and after which it seems that the rest of the competition are facing relatively high rates ranging from 4.8 all the way up to 774.6.
