Waymo’s Self-Driving Cars Have The Lowest Human Driver Takeover Rate

As it stands it is a rule in which all companies that wish to test self-driving cars are required to have a human driver behind the wheel. This is a safety net of sorts where in the event something goes wrong, the human driver can easily takeover control of the car and hopefully steer it to safety.

Now it seems that based on the statistics submitted by Alphabet’s Waymo to the California DMV, it looks like the company has the lowest human driver takeover rates (via 9to5Google) compared to the competition. Waymo also notes that the disengagements are not safety related, and that this is merely the transitioning in and out of autonomous mode.

Based on the numbers that were submitted, Waymo is reporting that from December 2016 to November 2017, there have been a total of 63 disengagements over 352,544.6 miles traveled, where for the most part the number of disengagements were in the single digits save for December 2016 and April 2017.

The Information’s Amir Efrati also compiled a list of the competition and confirmed that Waymo’s disengagement is indeed the lowest at 0.18 disengagements per 1,000 miles in California. Coming in second is GM-back Cruise at 0.8, and after which it seems that the rest of the competition are facing relatively high rates ranging from 4.8 all the way up to 774.6.

Google Also Cracking Down On Ads Featuring Cryptocurrency

Recently it was announced that Facebook had started to ban ads about ICO and cryptocurrency, and it seems that they are not alone in this. Google is also said to be cracking down on similar ads, although in Google’s case it seems that they aren’t going to the extremes of banning ads like what Facebook is doing.

Instead it seems that Google has created policies that will help their advertising team weed out abuse in advertisements that are related to cryptocurrencies. This is due to the fact that there are quite a number of bad actors out there who are taking advantage of the hype surrounding cryptocurrencies to put out misleading or deceptive ads, or even ads that could secretly use the viewer’s computing power to help mine for cryptocurrencies.

While not related to a Google or Facebook ad, hijacking an unsuspecting user’s computing power to mine for cryptocurrency isn’t new. Last year there was an incident where a public WiFi provider for Starbucks in an outlet at Buenos Aires was discovered to be mining for bitcoin using the computers of users who connected to it.

In a statement a Google spokesperson provided to Fast Company, “Mining cryptocurrency through ads is a relatively new form of abuse that violates our policies and one that we’ve been monitoring actively. We enforce our policies through a multi-layered detection system across our platforms which we update as new threats emerge.”

UK Group Plans 200-Mile Self-Driving Car Trial

In order to make it so that self-driving cars can become legal and available to the masses, a lot of testing needs to be done, and usually testing involves taking the self-driving cars on the road and testing them out in real-life conditions. That’s what pretty much all companies have been doing, but a self-driving group in the UK wants to take it to the extreme with a 200-mile test.

Dubbed the HumanDrive initiative, it seems that this project might take a while before it takes off. There are plans to simulate a range of conditions first before it embarks on its journey which is scheduled to take place in December 2019, but so far it seems to have been well-received.

According to the Business and Energy Secretary Greg Clark, “Low-carbon and self-driving vehicles are the future and they are going to drive forward a global revolution in mobility. Trailblazing projects like the HumanDrive project will play a vital role helping us deliver on that ambition.”

The project is a collaboration between several carmakers such as Groupe Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi, in addition to other educational institutions and organizations, like Cranfield University and Highways England. Mark Westwood, chief technology officer of the Transport Systems Catapult who is also involved in the project adds, “UK roads throw up some particular challenges. They are different from American roads, with roundabouts and demanding country lanes. These are really testing environments.”

Latest WhatsApp Beta Adds Sticker Packs Store

One of the features of Facebook Messenger are its sticker packs. These are basically emojis that have been supersized and are more expressive and fun, and it is also a feature that we’ve seen other chat apps like LINE and KakaoTalk use to great effect. Now it seems that the feature could be coming to WhatsApp.

According to a report from WABetaInfo, it appears that in the latest beta for WhatsApp, the company has added its own Sticker Packs Store. Basically this is a storefront where users will be able to browse different stickers and add them to their list, and from there they’ll be able to use it with their chats just like in Messenger.

It is unclear if these stickers will come in paid and free versions, or if they will just be free completely. What we’ve seen other apps do, such as LINE, is charge users for certain sticker packs. We’ve also seen them collaborate with celebrities and movies to create exclusive stickers that are valid for a limited time.

At this point in time it is unclear if the WhatsApp stickers will function like LINE where they can appear as suggestions as you type out certain words or phrases, or if they have to be inserted manually. It is also unknown if they will make it in the next public release of WhatsApp, but we’ll keep an eye out for it all the same.
