Kodak Claims 40,000 Investors Are Interested In Its Cryptocurrency

Kodak, a company that many probably associate with cameras and film, announced earlier this month that they would be launching their own cryptocurrency which seems to be the trend these days. Naturally many were skeptical given that the company’s core business seems to be in photography.

However as it turns out, there have been quite a number of people who are interested in the KODAKCoin because in a post on its website (via DPreview), the company is claiming that there have been over 40,000 investors who have expressed their interest in the cryptocurrency, so much so that its launch could be delayed as Kodak will now have to individually review the status of each investor, a process that they expect could take several weeks.

Basically all investors who are interested in the KODAKCoin need to have an “accredited investor” status, which is a status that comes with certain minimum requirements in terms of their earnings. For those unfamiliar, KODAKCoin is a cryptocurrency that the company announced during CES 2018 which is aimed towards photographers.

Kodak at that time stated that the cryptocurrency will help photographers get paid for their works in a more fair and prompt manner. In addition to announcing the KODAKCoin, Kodak also announced their own bitcoin mining rig, which is actually a machine built by Spotlite who licensed the Kodak brand.

GoPro Plus Service Will Now Include Device Replacements

Dropping your camera and breaking it is a pain that photographers will no doubt try their best to avoid, which is why there are cases that are designed to protect cameras from drops, and also why many professionals purchase insurance for their equipment. Now it looks like GoPro will also offer similar protection to its customers via the Plus service.

GoPro’s Plus subscription service has existed for a while now, but for the most part it has acted as a backup service for your photos and videos. However it seems that GoPro has decided to improve on the service by adding camera replacement as one of its features. What this means is that if you break your camera, GoPro will replace for you, no questions asked.

However it should be noted that the device replacement will be limited to two replacements in 12 months, meaning that if for whatever reason you break your camera the third time within the span of a year, the third replacement/repair is on you. It will also not be completely free, but instead the replacement will be charged at 20% of the camera’s original price, which we guess is still much cheaper buying a new one on its own, and potentially cheaper than repairing it.

In addition to device replacement, the new GoPro Plus plan will include mobile cloud backup, unlimited photo storage, 35 hours worth of video storage, 20% off GoPro accessories via the official online store, and priority phone and chat support. The service will be maintained at $5 a month with a free 30-day trial.

Apple Launches iPhone ‘Reserve A Battery’ Program In Canada

Apple is currently running a program in which all eligible iPhone devices can have their batteries replaced for a mere $29. However it seems that for some iPhones, namely the iPhone 6 Plus, is running into replacement issues for its batteries as Apple appears to be having trouble keeping enough batteries in stock.

So much so that iPhone 6 Plus owners will have to wait until late March or early April to get their battery replacements. However the good news is that over in Canada, Apple has launched an iPhone “Reserve a Battery” program. As the name suggests, this allows iPhone customers to reserve a battery for their iPhone ahead of time and be notified when it is available.

This means that it will save customers a trip to the Apple Store only to find out that batteries aren’t in stock. Those living in Canada can check out the program by signing in with their Apple ID on Apple’s Get Support page and filling out some details. It has also been pointed out that some of the steps involved can also be completed via the Apple Store app.

As for the rest of the world, MacRumors has received a tip that Canada is apparently being used as a trial country, meaning that Apple appears to be testing out the program in Canada first and seeing how customers respond before they possibly expand it to other markets in the future.

Uber Piloting A Bike-Sharing Service In San Francisco

Uber is probably best known for its ride-sharing services, whether it be cars or even motorbikes (in some countries). However it looks like Uber is now branching into bicycles where in a partnership with JUMP, they have announced a new bike-sharing service that they will be piloting in San Francisco.

For those unfamiliar, JUMP is a startup that has recently gotten the greenlight to launch a dockless bike-sharing service in San Francisco. The company will be launching with 250 bikes at the start, but it could be expanded by an additional 250 in the future assuming all goes well and the necessary permits have been approved.

With the partnership with Uber, users will be able to rent these bikes directly within the Uber app. However it should be noted that the bikes won’t be delivered to users, but rather users will have to go to the bikes themselves. The upside is that the bikes can be booked through the Uber app, so users can save themselves the effort in downloading a separate app and reserve it ahead of time.

Speaking to TechCrunch, Uber Head of Transportation Policy and Research Andrew Salzberg said that bikes were something that Uber was thinking about for some time now, and that the partnership with JUMP came at the right time. “It fits into this larger vision, we think, that there can be multiple modes of transportation that can be made available through the Uber app. There are a lot of places where there are many trips that it’s probably going to be quicker and cheaper to hop on a bike. Strategically, it makes a lot of sense for us as business.”
