Galaxy S8, S8+, Note 8 Oreo coming to unlocked models soon

Samsung isn’t exactly known for speedy updates (though, surprisingly, it’s not exactly the worse by some standards). It has, however, at least started to roll out the Android 8.0 (not 8.1) Oreo update to carrier models of its Galaxy S8 and S8+ 2017 flagships. What about the unlocked models, you ask? Samsung has finally broken its silence and is promising … Continue reading

Facebook Has Been Collecting Call, Text Message Data From Android Phones

Facebook is currently in some pretty serious hot water with regards to its recent privacy scandal, but it looks like things are about to get worse. This is because according to a tweet by New Zealander Dylan McKay, it has been discovered that Facebook has been collecting data on your calls and text messages via Android devices for the past few years.

This has also been reported by other users and has also been verified by the folks at ArsTechnica. Note that Facebook doesn’t actually know the contents of your phone calls or text messages, but rather the information is more along the lines of who you’ve contacted and when you have contacted, as reported by McKay who shared a log which showed the different times he contacted his partner’s mom.

While this sounds alarming, it seems that this is something that users might have unknowingly granted Facebook access to. In a statement made to ArsTechnica, a Facebook spokesperson said, “The most important part of apps and services that help you make connections is to make it easy to find the people you want to connect with. So, the first time you sign in on your phone to a messaging or social app, it’s a widely used practice to begin by uploading your phone contacts.”

This seems to only affect Android devices because iOS has never allowed silent access to call data. That being said, the good news is that if you’d rather not give Facebook access to said information, there is a way to delete your uploaded contacts from Facebook.

YouTube For Kids Found To Still Host Disturbing Content

Image credit – Simple Fun / WIRED

YouTube Kids is meant to be a safe haven of sorts where only children-appropriate videos will be allowed. However in recent times there has been some discovery of rather disturbing videos including conspiracy videos which are clearly a bad idea for such young and impressionable minds.

YouTube claims to be doing something about it, but it seems that whatever they’re doing isn’t enough. In a recent report from WIRED, it appears that disturbing videos are still being featured in YouTube Kids despite the company’s best efforts at trying to crack down on such videos from making it past its filters.

For example in WIRED’s report, they came across videos that featured popular children’s characters in disturbing situations, such as Peppa Pig tricked into eating bacon. There are also cartoon characters being sexualized, and also depictions of suicide attempts, and also videos that show disturbing ways of getting abortions, all of which are very obviously not kid-friendly.

According to YouTube, “We’ve taken a series of tough actions to better protect families on YouTube, including getting content down faster through technology, hiring more people to help us tackle content that breaks our rules, and cutting the revenue streams to content that misleads families. The YouTube team is made up of parents who are committed to improving our products and getting this right.”

Apple Will Not Be Livestreaming Its 27th Of March Event

Apple is expected to host an event on the 27th of March where if the rumors are to be believed, Apple will be unveiling a new iPad. Unfortunately if you were hoping to tune into the event and livestream it, prepare to be disappointed because it appears that unlike Apple’s events in the past, this particular event will not be able to livestream.

This was spotted by MacRumors via the Events app on the Apple TV. According to the caption of the event, it suggests that users will only be able to view the event after it has taken place. “Watch the special event—held at Lane Tech College Prep High School in Chicago, Illinois—after it concludes.”

This means that if you were hoping to be there to catch any product announcements, you’ll have to wait for either the press to break the news or wait until after the event has occurred in order to find out more. We’re not sure why Apple is choosing not to livestream this particular event since it has been typically been the case for the past few years, but for now this is the only watch to watch it.

However given that the event is more of an education-focused event, perhaps Apple did not see the need to broadcast it to the public as maybe the general public isn’t really the target audience.

Lenovo Mirage Camera With Daydream Available For Pre-Order

Following their dabbling in augmented reality with Google’s Project Tango, it seems that virtual reality (VR) is another area that Lenovo is interested in. Earlier this year the company unveiled a couple of VR devices, like the Mirage Solo headset and the Mirage Camera which lets users capture content for VR.

The good news is that if you were looking forward to getting your hands on the Mirage Camera, you’ll be pleased a tweet from The Tracker (via Engadget) has revealed that the Mirage Camera is now available for pre-order on Amazon. It is priced at $300 which isn’t necessarily cheap, but if you wanted to get into developing VR content this is a place to start.

For those learning about the Mirage Camera for the first time, this is a camera with dual lenses that is capable of shooting VR with a 180-degree viewing angle. Granted this isn’t as panoramic compared to 360-degree setups, but it is a lot more convenient to bring around to capture with. It is also Daydream compatible which means that the content captured on it will play nicely with Google’s Daydream devices.

The Mirage Solo headset recently went up for pre-order as well where it is priced at $400, meaning that the entire package with the camera will set you back a cool $700.

HTC U12+ might be the only HTC flagship you see this year
