Baidu Allowed To Test Self-Driving Cars In China

As the recent fatal crash involving a self-driving car in Tempe, Arizona has started a debate about the pace at which autonomous vehicles have been allowed on public roads for tests, China has reiterated its support of homegrown autonomous technology by allowing local search giant Baidu to test self-driving cars in the country. Baidu is the dominant online search engine in China, it’s often referred to as the country’s Google.

Reuters reports that Baidu has now received approval from China and it can now start testing its self-driving cars. Baidu will now be able to put its autonomous cars on public roads in Beijing to test its technology.

The permit that it has been awarded allows the company to test its self-driving cars on 33 public roads that cover an area of around 65 miles in the less-populated suburbs of Beijing.

“With supportive policies, we believe that Beijing will become a rising hub for the autonomous driving industry,” said Baidu VP Zhao Cheng in a statement.

Baidu is far from the only Chinese company working on autonomous driving technology but it’s certainly the nation’s leader in this space. The company even launched a new platform in 2017 which aims to enable car manufacturers to make self-driving cars faster.

Baidu is hopeful that it will be able to put self-driving cars on roads in China by next year.

Uber’s Exit From Southeast Asia Will Be Confirmed Tomorrow

It was first reported a couple of weeks ago that Uber might soon bow out of the Southeast Asian market. The company was reportedly in talks with local ride-hailing service Grab to sell its division in return for a stake in the company. According to a new report by Bloomberg, Uber has reached a deal with Grab and is going to announce it as early as tomorrow morning.

Bloomberg reports that Uber has reached an agreement with local rival Grab to sell its Southeast Asia business in return for a stake in the company. The deal would see Uber bowing out of yet another market after struggling to compete with a local competitor.

The report adds that this deal will include all of Uber’s operations in Southeast Asia as well as Uber Eats. The company will get a stake between 25 and 30 percent in the new combined entity. Both Uber and Grab declined to comment on the report today but the scribe maintains that this deal will likely be officially announced tomorrow.

This isn’t the first time that Uber has inked a deal like this. The company sold its entire business in China to Didi Chuxing in 2016 for a 17.5 percent stake in the local competitor. The company later did the same in Russia where the business was sold to native internet giant Yandex.

Facebook CEO Apologizes For Data Scandal With Full-Page Newspaper Ads

Facebook has been ensnared in a data privacy scandal for the past week or so which has led to legal and regulatory headaches for the company, not to mention the fact that the company’s reputation has also taken a hit. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized for the entire episode previously and he has done that again today with full-page newspaper ads in some of the country’s leading publications.

The ads are in the form of an apology written by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and are a bid to clarify the company’s position on the entire ordeal.

“You may have heard about a quiz app by a university researcher that leaked Facebook data of millions of people in 2014,” Zuckerberg writes, terming it as a breach of trust. He adds that “I’m sorry we didn’t do more at the time,” and that the company is now taking steps to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again.

Zuckerberg continues that Facebook has already stopped apps like this from gaining access to so much information and now it’s limiting the data apps get when users sign-in using Facebook. The company is also investigating every single app that had access to significant amounts of data before this was fixed. Facebook expects that there will be others and that when it finds them, it will ban them and tell all affected users.

He signs off the apologetic note by promising to “do better” for you.

NBA Targets Casual Viewers With $0.99 Fourth Quarter Live Streams

Only the most dedicated of NBA fans will spend a significant amount of money on a League Pass. It’s not something that the casual viewer would do, those who only tune in to watch the ending of a game from time to time. Some of these viewers might just stick with illegal online streams to watch the fourth quarter and perhaps this is why the NBA is experimenting with a new $0.99 option which will enable casual viewers to tune into the official stream of a game in the fourth quarter only.

NBA has started testing this new streaming option which will allow viewers to access the official live stream in a game’s fourth quarter for 99 cents only.

This experiment hasn’t been officially announced by the NBA just yet but some users with the league’s official app have received notifications inviting them to watch the fourth quarter of a game live for just $0.99.

It’s really not surprising to see that the NBA is toying with this idea. It’s commissioner Adam Silver said almost two years ago that the NBA will eventually get to a point “where somebody wants to watch the last five minutes of the game, and they go click, they’ll pay a set price for five minutes as opposed to what they would pay for two hours…”

However, it’s a possibility that the NBA might charge more for this once it decides to roll out this feature widely, but it’s not confirmed at this point in time if and when it will do that.

OnePlus 5T Will No Longer Be Sold In North America

OnePlus is expected to launch a new flagship smartphone in the coming months and it’s clearing its OnePlus 5T stock prior to that. The OnePlus 5T is a slightly revamped version of last year’s OnePlus 5 that was released in late 2017 and while it’s the only flagship that the company is selling right now, customers in North America will not be able to purchase it. OnePlus has confirmed that all of the OnePlus 5T stock it made for North America has been sold out.

While it’s not uncommon for smartphones to go out of stock particularly if there has been significant demand, the company has confirmed to Engadget that the OnePlus 5T is not temporarily out of stock in this region. All units made for North America have been sold out ahead of schedule.

Kyle Kiang, the head of global marketing and general manager of North America, revealed that the company saw more demand for the OnePlus 5T in North America that it had anticipated. The device was sold in North America for about four months only before it sold out.

What this means is that customers who want to purchase a new OnePlus handset will now have to wait for its next flagship to be released. The OnePlus 6 is expected to be released in the coming months and rumors suggest that it might feature significant hardware improvements compared to its predecessor.
