Cheaper 9.7-inch iPad With Apple Pencil Support Rumored

If you thought you could get around buying the more expensive iPad Pro and still enjoy the same Apple Pencil features, you’d be sorely mistaken. However that could change soon because according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple could be getting ready to unveil a cheaper 9.7-inch iPad that will come with Apple Pencil support.

Apple is expected to host a field trip event in Chicago in the coming week and Kuo believes that Apple could use the event to unveil a new tablet. This would be a change of pace for Apple who typically announces new products at scheduled events like WWDC or at their iPhone event in the later part of the year.

However Kuo claims that Apple might use the field trip to announce a new, cheaper iPad, along with a new keyboard accessory. He also claims that Apple might be getting rid of the iPad mini lineup as the demand for mini tablets is being replaced by larger smartphones. Given the lack (or lackluster) upgrades that Apple has made to the iPad mini in recent times, we suppose this doesn’t come as a complete surprise.

Take it with a grain of salt for now, but if price was one of the reasons you’ve held back on purchasing the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, maybe this new cheaper iPad could be the solution you’ve been waiting for.

Analysts Believe A Foldable iPhone Could Launch In 2020

When it comes to smartphones with foldable displays, it seems that pretty much only Samsung seems to be exploring that front, at least publicly. However it looks like Samsung might not be alone because according analysts from Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Apple could be getting in on the action as well.

The report from CNBC claims that the analysts are saying that Apple is working with their Asian partners on such a device which they expect to launch in the next 2 years. According to analyst Wamsi Mohan, “We expect the iPhones this fall to be largely unchanged for the OLED versions although size changes have proved to be a catalyst in the past. Our checks also suggest that Apple is working with suppliers on a foldable phone (that potentially could double up as a tablet) for launch in 2020.”

Like we said, so far Samsung appears to be the only company to have publicly confirmed that they are working on a phone with a foldable display. While it will no doubt be a great way to showcase their display technology, it is unclear if such a device will have any demand. An example would be phones with glasses-free 3D displays which in theory was an interesting idea, but it is clear that it never really quite caught on.

It’s probably best to take this with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Are smartphones with foldable displays the next big thing?

Street Fighter To Be Adapted Into A TV Series

Given the popularity of the Street Fighter franchise, it’s not surprising that we’ve seen adapted onto the big screen. There was that original Street Fighter movie that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, then there was also that movie that was based on Chun-Li’s character that featured Kristin Kreuk in the titular role.

Then let’s not forget that there was also live-action web series dubbed Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist that made some waves. Basically Street Fighter existing outside of the game isn’t new and now it looks like we will be getting a new TV series. This is according to a report from Deadline who reports that a new series will be developed.

The series is said to be based on the World Warrior story-arc which was introduced in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior where it focuses on Ryu, Ken, Guile and Chun-Li who are trying to take down M. Bison. According to Yoshinori Ono, Capcom Executive Producer for Street Fighter, “After a long search, guided by the team behind Assassin’s Fist, we are delighted to be partnering with a company with the outstanding TV experience of Mark Gordon and eOne. They have the credentials to help us launch a faithful adaptation of Street Fighter as a major TV series.”

There is no word on who will be starring in the upcoming series and when it is expected to be aired, but if you’re fan of the franchise, it could be worth keeping an eye out for.

Google Letting Some Android Users Shop In A Different Country’s Play Store

Due to licensing, copyright, and maybe censorship issues, not all apps are available worldwide. This means that while some users can access certain apps, others living in another part of the world can’t. This has led to smartphone users coming up with unofficial ways of circumventing these restrictions.

However the good news is that for Android users, it looks like Google will be easing up on those restrictions and allowing some Android users to shop in a different country’s Play Store. This means that for some, they will be able to make purchases in a Play Store different from the one that they are using, although note that this comes with a caveat.

Like we said, this is only available to some Android users and in order to meet the criteria for being able to purchase outside your current country, users will have to have made a valid purchase using a valid payment method in the country that they have chosen. This might be ideal for those who used to work/study in a country before moving back home or vice versa.

This allows them to continue shopping from that particular country’s Play Store while also being able to access their current country’s Play Store. If you have done this before, head on over to Google Play on your device and select “Account”. If you have met this criteria, you should be able to see a new option called “Country and profiles” which will let you switch between Play Stores.

Apple Patent Hints At Face ID Possibly Arriving For The Apple Watch

At the moment how the Apple Watch authenticates the wearer who is wearing the Apple Watch is through skin contact. This means that as long as the user has authenticated themselves previously, as long as the watch is touching their skin, but taking the watch off your wrist means having to reauthenticate again which can be a bit tedious.

However in a recently discovered patent filed by Apple by the folks at Patently Apple, it seems that Apple is exploring the idea of an Apple Watch that comes with Face ID. For those unfamiliar, Face ID is a new facial recognition security feature that is part of the iPhone X. It is expected that the feature will find its way into the iPad, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to think that it might eventually find its way into more Apple products, like the Apple Watch.

What makes this patent particularly interesting is that according to Patently Apple, they believe it might have been filed while Face ID was still being worked on because it refers to the feature as “user identification”, possibly to prevent Face ID from being leaked. It also was filed in 2016 which means that it isn’t some old patent just collecting dust.

However given that it is a patent, it’s hard to say if Apple will make it a reality. Patents are sometimes filed to protect intellectual property and ideas, so whether this is Apple simply protecting themselves or a hint at future features is anyone’s guess, but what do you guys think about Face ID for the Apple Watch? Yay or nay?
