Instagram Re-Enables GIPHY Integration

Earlier this year Instagram announced that users would be able to integrate GIFs into Stories in a partnership with GIPHY. However a couple of months later, that integration was removed due to a racist GIF that was spotted in GIPHY’s database. For those wondering when the feature would be returning, you’ll be pleased to learn that it has.

This has been confirmed in a report from TechCrunch in which Instagram has re-enabled GIPHY’s integration. However this is only for Instagram as Snapchat claims that they have nothing to share right now about whether or not they’ll be reactivating the feature. According to Instagram, “We’ve been in close contact with GIPHY throughout this process and we’re confident that they have put measures in place to ensure that Instagram users have a good experience.”

GIPHY also responded with a statement that reads, “To anyone who was affected: we’re sorry. We take full responsibility for this recent event and under no circumstances does GIPHY condone or support this kind of content . . . We have also finished a full investigation into our content moderations systems and processes and have made specific changes to our process to ensure soemthing [sic] like this does not happen again.”

So if you’ve enjoyed using GIPHY’s GIFs in your Instagram Stories, you’ll be pleased to learn that the feature can be used again.

MacOS finally gains external GPU support

The latest update to macOS provides support for external graphics card. Apple announced this would hit the OS last June at WWDC and now it’s finally here. The update allows Mac users to increase the graphical processing power through an external graphics card connected through Thunderbolt 3.

Perviously users had to buy an eGPU dev kit from Apple or employ unofficial means to enable external graphics cards, which meant Apple wouldn’t bail them out if something happened. The additional horsepower isn’t needed for general use, but the added graphics cards supercharge Macs for VR, rendering and gaming. Only a handful of eGPUs are compatible with macOS so choose carefully before adding one to your rig.

The feature comes from the High Sierra 10.13.4 Combo Update which also adds Business Chat in Messages, a new iTunes and a super handy feature to Safari in which users can jump to the right-most open tab by using Command+9.

Amazon Continues To Dominate The Smart Speaker Market

With Apple and Google getting into the smart speaker market, we’re sure that some are wondering if Amazon’s headstart into the market might have given them an advantage. It turns out that it has, in fact it seems to still be proving to be a tremendous advantage because according to a report from Kantar (via PhoneArena), Amazon is still king.

This is based on a survey in which based on the 1,097 participants, it seems that about 60% of those participating own an Amazon Echo device. This covers a range of Echo speakers such as the original Echo, the Echo Dot, Echo Plus, and the Echo Spot, all of which make up for around 66% of the market.

As for Google, it looks like they’re not doing too badly either as they command roughly 30% of the market. Apple’s HomePod wasn’t in the mix but it is possible that this could be due to the fact that the speakers weren’t released at the time of the survey. However based on an earlier survey, it was suggested that the HomePod had around 3% of the market.

Also it seems that according to the survey, the most used function of the smart speaker is for music, podcasts, or audio book playbacks. This is followed by reminders/alarms, checking the weather, and looking up information.
