Best Buy Will Reportedly Stop Selling Huawei’s Phones

2018 was supposed to be Huawei’s year where according to reports, the Chinese company was in the process of inking deals with the likes of AT&T and Verizon to bring their phones to the US and be sold officially through the carriers, much like what other brands like Apple and Samsung have been doing.

However their efforts have been hampered by US lawmakers and intelligence agencies who have advised against buying Huawei phones due to alleged national security concerns. Unfortunately it looks like things are only getting worse for Huawei because according to a report from CNET, they have heard from a source that it looks like Best Buy will stop selling Huawei phones in the future.

Prior to this, Huawei handsets could be purchased in the US unlocked at full retail price from the likes of retailers such as Best Buy. However the report claims that Best Buy was the one that decided to end their relationship with Huawei and that they have stopped ordering new phones from the company and will cease sales of Huawei phones over the next few weeks.

In a statement from Best Buy, “We don’t comment on specific contracts with vendors, and we make decisions to change what we sell for a variety of reasons.” Huawei also declined to get into specifics but referred to the retailer as a “valued partner”. It is unclear if the concerns of US intelligence agencies might have been the reason behind this decision, or if it could be something else entirely, but if true this can’t be good news for Huawei who is close to launching their flagship P20 handset.

Video: The driver of the autonomous Uber was distracted before fatal crash

The Tempe, Arizona police department have released a video showing the moments before the fatal crash that involved Uber’s self-driving car. The video includes the view of the street from the Uber and a view of minder behind the wheel of the autonomous Uber.

Warning: This video is disturbing.

The video shows the victim crossing a dark street when an Uber self-driving Volvo XC90 strikes her at 40 mph. It also shows the person who is supposed to be babysitting the autonomous vehicle looking down moments before the crash. It’s unclear what is distracting the minder. It’s also unclear why Uber’s systems did not detect and react to the victim who was clearly moving across its range of sensors at walking speeds.

Uber provided the following statement regarding the incident to TechCrunch:

Our hearts go out to the victim’s family. We are fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of this incident.

Since the crash on March 19, Uber has pulled all its vehicles from the roads operating in Pittsburgh, Tempe, San Francisco and Toronto. This is the first time an autonomous vehicle operating in self-driving mode has resulted in a human death. In a statement to TechCrunch, the NHTSA said it has sent over its “Special Crash Investigation” team to Tempe. This is “consistent with NHTSA’s vigilant oversight and authority over the safety of all motor vehicles and equipment, including automated technologies,” a spokesperson for the agency told TechCrunch.

“NHTSA is also in contact with Uber, Volvo, Federal, State and local authorities regarding the incident,” the spokesperson said. “The agency will review the information and proceed as warranted.”

Toyota also paused its self-driving testing in the US following the accident.

This tragic accident is the sort of situation self-driving vehicles are supposed to address. After all, these systems are supposed to be able to see through the dark and cannot get distracted by Twitter.

Uber self-driving car fatal crash video released by Tempe police

An autonomous vehicle belonging to ridesharing company Uber struck a pedestrian earlier this week, resulting in her death. Though a human safety operator was at the wheel, the vehicle was driving itself at the time of the collision, which happened at night as the victim was crossing the road. The accident happened in Tempe, Arizona, and though details have been … Continue reading

Huawei phones to disappear from Best Buy shelves

Prepare for another tirade from Richard Yu next week. It is becoming harder and harder to be Huawei these days, especially to be Huawei in the US. It was already a huge deal when AT&T (and Verizon) pulled the rug from under it at the worst possible time. Now it seems that one of Huawei’s last strongholds in the country. … Continue reading

YouTube Now Banning Videos That Sells Guns

The gun debate is something that we reckon will not be going away anytime soon, although it seems like tech companies have already taken a stance. Take for example YouTube where back in 2017, the platform banned videos that showed users how to modify their guns, but that’s not all.

According to a report from Motherboard, YouTube is further cracking down on gun videos where according to an updated policy, videos that sell firearms or provide links to sites that sell firearms will be banned. It reads, “Intends to sell firearms or certain firearms accessories through direct sales…or links to sites that sell these items.”

As you might note this also covers accessories which includes accessories that will allow a firearm to simulate automatic fire, or an accessory that can convert a firearm to do so, along with high capacity magazine kits. It will also see videos that teach people how to make their own firearms, ammunition, high capacity magazines, how to install said accessories or mods, banned.

Unsurprisingly YouTubers who have channels that are based around these topics aren’t too thrilled about the changes, with some expressing their frustration due to these rules seemingly coming out of the blue without giving creators a transitional period for them to modify existing videos or upcoming videos that have already been recorded and edited.
