Android 8.1 Update Causes Overcurrent Charging Bug On Pixel XL, Fix Incoming

There are several reasons why phones overheat and explode during charging. It could be due to a hardware problem where there is an issue with the circuitry in your phone. It could also be a problem with the charger itself where sometimes unofficial chargers might be made with cheaper materials and might not be as safe as the real deal.

Another possibility is that it could be due to a software problem, which unfortunately is something that Pixel XL owners are experiencing right now. According to reports, it appears that the recent Android 8.1 Oreo update that was rolled out earlier this year has caused an overcurrent charging bug to the original Pixel XL.

This is pretty dangerous because due to the bug, the handset will try to pull up to 40% more current than what the charger is giving it, resulting in it entering and leaving a charging state as the charger attempts to shut itself off to prevent overcurrent charging. However the good news is that those who are using the stock charger shouldn’t have issues as it has been engineered with failsafes to prevent things like this from happening.

For those using third-party chargers, that is a different story because if the charger doesn’t have overcurrent protection then that’s where it gets dangerous. The good news is that Google has since acknowledged the issue where they note, “Tests run by our safety engineers have also confirmed that even if a momentary overcurrent draw of the kind described were to occur in normal-use conditions, it would not pose a safety hazard. In addition, Pixel XL was designed with multiple layers of safety protections to further prevent overheating.”

They also say that they have already found a fix to the bug and expects to roll it out in the coming weeks.

Apple Watch Can Detect Abnormal Heart Rhythms With 97% Accuracy

Just like many other fitness bands and smartwatches, the Apple Watch comes with a heart rate tracker built into it. However according to studies done in the past, it has been found that the Apple Watch can actually be used to detect abnormal heart rhythms. Whether or not this was an unintended consequence of the sensor is unclear, but it seems to work.

In fact according to the folks behind the Cardiogram app, they have done a new study in which they found that the Apple Watch has a 97% accuracy when it comes to detecting abnormal heart rhythms. This is based on more than 139 million heart rate and step count measurements collected from 9,750 Cardiogram users who also enrolled themselves in the study.

According to Cardiogram co-founder Johnson Hsieh, “97% accuracy refers to the c-statistic, or area under the sensitivity-specificity curve. Surprisingly, both the sensitivity and specificity of DeepHeart were even higher than an FDA-cleared Apple Watch ECG attachment — 98% (vs 93%) sensitivity and 90% (vs 84%) specificity.”

That being said, we doubt that in its current form, the Apple Watch (or any other wearable with a heart rate sensor) can replace an EKG. However the fact that it is accurate means that at the very least it can alert wearers to impending problems and possibly save a life as we have seen in the past.

Fortnite Battle Royale To Get Live Record, Replay Features

Epic’s Fortnite Battle Royale was a popular game before it recently found its way onto mobile, but judging by the responses to the mobile release, where it managed to rake in a cool $1.5 million in the first four days, it seems that its popularity is growing. So much so that it looks like Epic will be fast-tracking some new features for the game.

According to a report from Game Informer, it looks like Epic will be bringing live record and replay features to Unreal Engine 4 which in turn will be applied to Fortnite Battle Royale. As the name of the features imply, this will give gamers an in-game method of recording their matches in which they can then use to share on social media.

While it is possible to record in-game footage via third-party software, having an official way to do so is always welcome. Epic is also expected to release a new suite of tools to help them edit their videos featuring multiple camera angles and then post them onto social media and video platforms like YouTube and Twitch, all of which will be part of the upcoming 4.20 engine update that is scheduled to be launched this summer.

The addition of these tools to Unreal Engine 4 will not be to just Fortnite Battle Royale as any game that uses the engine will be able to take advantage of it as well.

It Looks Like Those Tomb Raider Remasters Aren’t Happening Anymore

In a report from the other day, it was suggested that Tomb Raider 1-3 would be getting remastered and released on Steam. There was even some early footage of what the game could look like but unfortunately for gamers looking forward to the remastered copies of the original Tomb Raider, it looks like it won’t be happening anymore.

This is according to a report from Game Informer who spotted a tweet by Realtech VR who announced the cancellation of the remasters. The tweet was later deleted and replaced with another tweet which says that the company will be working on augmented reality and virtual reality, and that they will not be committed on third-party licenses anymore (for those unfamiliar Realtech VR was the developer that was supposedly tasked with the remasters).

It is unclear as to what prompted the sudden change, perhaps creative differences, or maybe they decided it was no longer worth their time and energy, but either way it looks like for now the Tomb Raider 1-3 remasters are off the table. It is possible that maybe Square Enix could seek out another developer to remaster them, but until we hear otherwise perhaps it’s best not to get your hopes up.

In the meantime if you’re not too fussed about graphics quality, the original Tomb Raider titles are available on Steam that you can check out and relive some of the glory days, if you so choose to.
