Arizona Won’t Restrict Self-Driving Cars Following Fatal Crash

An unfortunate accident happened earlier this week in Tempe, Arizona where a pedestrian was struck by a self-driving Uber car. The woman was taken to the hospital but she did not survive. This was the first known fatal accident involving a self-driving car and while many feel that tests on public roads should be restricted for now, Arizona says it sees no immediate need to do that.

State officials have said that they don’t see an immediate need to restrict the rules on the tests of self-driving cars on public roads in the state following the fatal accident earlier this week. There was a safety driver behind the wheel who, according to the police, showed no signs of being impaired.

Meanwhile, Uber not only pulled its self-driving cars off public roads in Arizona, the company has grounded its entire self-driving fleet meaning that it’s not even conducting tests in other states.

Toyota has decided to suspend its self-driving car tests until further notice in deference to “an emotional effect” that its test drivers might experience after hearing about the accident. “This ‘timeout’ is meant to give them time to come to a sense of balance about the inherent risks of their jobs,” Toyota added in its statement.

The state wants to maintain the status quo for now. Arizona’s director for policy and communications at its department of transportation, Kevin Biesty, has said that the regulations in place currently are sufficient and that there are no immediate plans to enact new rules concerning the tests of self-driving cars on public roads.

Mystery Huawei Smartphone With 512GB Storage Spotted

It appears that Huawei has a new smartphone in the pipeline that will offer an incredible amount of internal storage. A mystery Huawei device has been certified by TENAA, China’s equivalent of the FCC, and the listing on its website reveals that this device has 512GB of onboard storage. It might very well be the first smartphone with this amount of internal storage.

Huawei is due to launch its new Huawei P20 lineup later this month. The company has scheduled an event on March 27th in Paris where it’s going to finally unveil the P20, P20 Lite, and P20 Pro officially.

However, it’s not known at this point in time if this mystery device that has been spotted at TENAA is a variant of one of the upcoming P20 devices or a completely different device altogether. The latter seems more plausible given that we have yet to hear any rumors about a P20 device with 512GB of storage and we’ve heard a lot of rumors about these handsets so far.

Some might think that perhaps it’s a typo in the online listing which makes it seem like this unnamed Huawei smartphone is going to have 512GB of storage. Interestingly, the company requested a change to the listing after the initial certification request to reflect that it has that amount of storage. This puts to bed the theory that this may have been a typo.

We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out as Huawei hasn’t dropped any hints pertaining to a smartphone with 512GB onboard storage so far.
