Jimmy Iovine Might Take A Reduced Role At Apple Music

It was reported earlier this year in January that Apple Music boss Jimmy Iovine was going to leave the company. He joined Apple in 2014 when he and Dr. Dre sold their headphone and music streaming company Beats that they co-founded back in 2008 to Apple for $3 billion. Iovine, a former CEO of Interscope, was said to exit Apple after his Apple shares vested fully. That report was denied but a new one suggests that while he may not leave the company, Iovine will take on a reduced role at Apple.

The Wall Street Journal reports today that Iovine will be reducing his involvement with Apple Music starting in August this year. He’s reportedly going to transition to a consulting role and won’t be involved with the daily operations of Apple’s music streaming service.

Apple and Iovine haven’t commented on the report as yet so it’s unclear right now how much truth there is in these claims. A step down to a consulting role would suggest that it just sets the stage for Iovine’s eventual exit from Apple and that might very well be the case.

However, Iovine may not be giving up his duties at Apple because he’s thinking of switching jobs. The Journal hears from its sources that Iovine is planning to spend more time with his family after he steps down to a consulting role and that he would assist Apple Senior VP Eddy Cue as and when required.

Standalone HTC Vive Focus Headset Will Be Released Outside China Soon

HTC’s virtual reality division launched the Vive Focus standalone virtual reality headset in November last year. The company said at that time that it’s only going to release the headset in China. It’s now ready to release it in other markets, though. HTC has confirmed at the Game Developers Conference 2018 in San Francisco that it will soon release the standalone Vive Focus VR headset in markets outside China.

The Vive Focus VR headset is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chipset and uses HTC’s Vive Wave VR open platform. The company points out that this is going to be the first six degrees of freedom capable standalone virtual reality to be commercially available.

It has a single 2880×1600 pixel resolution display with 110 degrees FOV. Other specs include support for up to 2TB microSD cards, a USB Type-C port, built-in microphones and speakers with a 3.5mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, and a built-in rechargeable battery with support for QC 3.0 fast charging.

Developers who want to create new experiences for this platform can check out HTC’s developer portal. The company has confirmed that it’s making Vive Focus developer kits available to registered developers in most countries starting today.

HTC hasn’t confirmed precisely when the Vive Focus is going to be released in markets outside China and how much it’s going to cost. It has only said that the headset will be available in global markets “later this year.”
