Facebook’s Messenger app is on its way to becoming a social network in its own right, thanks to new group chat features rolled out today. Like regular groups (the app for which Facebook killed last year), group chats now come with admin privileges. A…
With Google officially launching ARCore, it seems that quite a few developers and companies are taking advantage of it, such as eBay who is using augmented reality (AR) to help users figure out the best boxes to ship their items with. Then there is also IKEA who is bringing their Place app to Android, and InnoVision’s Meow ARCat that lets you raise a cat in AR.
Now if you are using a phone that does support ARCore, you might be interested in a new Google app called “Just A Line”. This is an app that lets users “draw” a line in the air using their phones that their friends can interact with. “Just a Line is an app that lets you make simple drawings in augmented reality, then share your creation with a short video. Touch the screen to draw, then hit record and share what you make with #justaline.”
In a way this reminds us of some of the AR filters that we’ve seen apps like Snapchat roll out to users, except this is more “official”. Of course this means that you will require a phone that supports ARCore, which at the moment aren’t that many that do, but this is something that Google expects to address over time. In the meantime for those who do have an ARCore-supported device, head on over to the Google Play Store to download the app.

The rumors are claiming that Canon might have a high-end mirrorless camera in the works, and even Sony is predicting that the company could have one ready to launch in the next year or so. Now it looks like Canon might have very well confirmed those rumors according to a recent interview with DPreview.
According to the interview in which the publication spoke to several Canon executives, they were asked about Canon’s plans for high-end mirrorless cameras. According to the execs, “At Canon we have what’s called a ‘full lineup strategy’. This means that we want to satisfy all of the demands in the market, so we have mirrorless and also DSLR, which combined makes an EOS hierarchy. We want to fill the gaps to satisfy customer demands across the board.”
They also add, “In the EOS hierarchy we have cameras from entry-level to professional with different features. When it comes to mirrorless cameras, we have entry-level models, and we’ve just about started on the mid-range class. What that tells you is that Canon is confident about mirrorless technology within this range of products.”
Basically it sounds like Canon plans on starting from the bottom and working their way to the top, which only serves to hype up the company’s products. However whether or not it will come in the next year or so remains to be seen, but according to Canon, they feel like there is still quite a bit of work to do before they can reach a level of satisfaction that lets their users “confidently move from DSLR to mirrorless”.

When digital movies and music were sold piecemeal, it was sort of easy to see why people might turn to piracy. However with the introduction of subscription-based streaming where consumers can pay a flat fee and stream as much video and music as they would like, you would think that it might see a drop in piracy, right?
However that doesn’t appear to be the case, at least not according to a recent report by piracy tracker MUSO where in their latest report (via TorrentFreak), they found that online piracy is more popular than ever. They also found a shift in the way users pirated content, where it appears that more users are turning to streaming websites, although torrents and websites with direct downloads still have a pretty significant user base.
Based on their stats, they also found that the US is the number one when it comes to visiting these pirated streaming websites with a whopping 27.9 billion visits. This is followed by Russia, India, Brazil, and Turkey as far as the top five countries are concerned. What’s interesting is that China, despite it being seen as the hub of piracy, actually came in fourteenth place with 4.6 billion visits.
The report also revealed that mobile piracy is on the rise where for the first time ever, more people were accessing pirated content via their mobile devices compared to desktops which used to be a favorite.

Just like a lot of memes, Pepe the Frog started out innocently enough where it was originally drawn as part of a comic series, Boy’s Club by Matt Furie. Over the years it was used in all kinds of way, until the past couple of years where President Donald Trump got ahold of it and where it eventually evolved into sort of alt-right’s mascot of sorts.
Companies and brands and celebrities who have used it in recent times have come under fire for it, which is why it isn’t surprising to see that Blizzard is looking to clamp down on Overwatch players using it especially during competitions. A report from Kotaku earlier this year revealed that a spectator with a Pepe sign had it confiscated by security.
A report from Dot Esports has also confirmed that Blizzard is looking to discourage players from using the meme, such as in the case with Overwatch player Jay “sinatraa” Won who posted the meme before deleting it later.
Blizzard has since confirmed their stance on the meme in a statement to CNET and Dot Esports which reads, “The Overwatch League discourages the use of symbols and imagery which are associated with or used by hate groups, including Pepe the Frog. At Blizzard Arena, it’s our policy that fan signs comply with this policy. We likewise ask the same of Overwatch League teams and players on their social-media channels.”

These days everything just tries to be as sleek as it can be, and in terms of aesthetics, it sure looks pretty good. However what about in terms of feel? That’s actually something that researchers at Aalto University, Finland, and KAIST, South Korea have tried to do in a study to find the best way to press a button.
According to Professor Antti Oulasvirta at Aalto University, “This research was triggered by admiration of our remarkable capability to adapt button-pressing. We push a button on a remote controller differently than a piano key. The press of a skilled user is surprisingly elegant when looked at terms of timing, reliability, and energy use.”
“We successfully press buttons without ever knowing the inner workings of a button. It is essentially a black box to our motor system. On the other hand, we also fail to activate buttons, and some buttons are known to be worse than others.” So what did their research find? Unsurprisingly they found that the best buttons to press are ones that have actual travel.
A good example would be mechanical keyboards in which might not be the thinnest or sleekest, but have typically received favorable feedback in terms of it being “satisfying” to use. As to what is the point of the research and what its data can be used for, perhaps it can be used to help better design systems and user interfaces in the future, where maybe more consideration should be given to buttons with travel, even if they don’t necessarily appear to be aesthetically pleasing.
