We Could Be Seeing More Alexa-Powered Lamps In The Future

Right now Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant pretty much exists in two forms: an audio product like a speaker, or in a smartphone. However it seems in the future we might be seeing more Alexa-powered devices launched that don’t necessarily come in either forms, and instead could be coming in the form of a lamp.

The company has recently announced a reference design for an Alexa-powered lamp. What this means is that manufacturers who want to created Alexa home products that aren’t necessarily speakers, this lamp could be used as an alternative. This particular reference design comes from an ODM called Adition and the device will feature both Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, a couple of microphones, and a dimmable light.

This would not be the first Alexa-powered lamp as a couple of years ago, GE unveiled their own Alexa lamp. However for whatever reason this has never really caught on, but Amazon’s announcement of the reference design could be a sign that the company is looking into more platforms in which Alexa could find its way onto.

When exactly will we see more Alexa lamps in the future remains to be seen, but it is a pretty clever way of bringing more Alexa products into the homes of their customers.

Verizon Could Launch Palm-Branded Smartphones Later This Year

Before Apple, Samsung, LG, and so on, there were brands like Palm and HP who made what could be considered as smartphones back then. However very clearly these brands did not survive the coming of the smartphone era, although it looks like at least one of them will be staging a comeback.

According to a report from Android Police, they have heard from a source that TCL is expected to launch a Palm-branded smartphone on Verizon’s network later this year. For those unfamiliar, TCL acquired the rights to Palm’s name several years ago. The company also licensed the BlackBerry brand ever since BlackBerry announced they would be quitting the hardware business.

That being said, not much is known about the phone at this point in time, save for the possibility of it launching on Verizon. Given Verizon’s history with Palm in the past, it’s not surprising that they might be looking to get with them again. It is unclear what kind of specs we might be looking at, and more importantly what kind of operating system it will run.

These days it’s more or less a toss up between iOS or Android, but could TCL be looking to revive webOS with a Palm phone? Or could we be seeing an Android-powered Palm device? We suppose we’ll have to wait and see, but until then take it with a grain of salt.

Razer Phone’s Android 8.1 Oreo Update Arriving In April 2018

Despite having been released months ago, for some reason the Razer Phone has yet to receive its Android Oreo update. However we suppose better late than never because in a tweet by the company’s account, they have confirmed that the Android Oreo update will be released for the handset in April 2018.

We should point out that Razer will be going straight to Android 8.1 Oreo versus Android 8.0 Oreo, which is good news since it means that users won’t need to wait for the next Oreo update. There is no specific release date provided, but Razer estimates that it will most likely be arriving in mid or late April.

However as we have seen in the past, sometimes bugs do pop up during development and deployment and testing, which means that there is a chance it could be delayed, but hopefully it won’t. The good news is that if you don’t think you can wait that long, Razer has announced that the Android Oreo developer preview for the Razer Phone is available if you’d like to get a taste.

Note that since this is a developer preview, which acts like a beta of sorts, what you see might not necessarily represent the final version, but like we said it is a taste of what’s to come.

Samsung Gear S4 Rumored To Be In The Works

The Samsung Gear S3 was launched in 2016 and for those who were expecting a successor, that didn’t exactly happen last year where Samsung instead launched the Gear Sport. However the good news is that 2018 could be the year of the Gear S4, at least according to a report from the folks at SamMobile.

According to the report, it seems that Samsung is working on the Gear S4 and that the model could come with more health features. The report claims that we could looking at improvements to health and fitness features, such as more in-depth sleep tracking. Other than that we’re not sure what else to expect save for the expected upgrades to its processor, maybe RAM, and also battery life.

Samsung’s Gear series has been somewhat well-received and despite what many had expected, Samsung shied away from going down the well-trodden path of adopting Google’s Wear OS platform (formerly known as Android Wear), instead choosing to use their own smartphone platform instead.

No word on when the Gear S4 will be announced, but if we had to venture a guess, perhaps it could be announced alongside the Galaxy Note 9, which if the rumors are to be believed could be launched as early as this coming July.
