Although long available on tablet PCs, Windows 10 has generally been ignored in favor of iOS and Android tablets for many reasons. One of those is the torrent of updates you get each time and the downtime those incurs. Nowhere is that even more problematic than the “offline time” the OS spends when installing major feature updates, practically locking you … Continue reading
It seems to be a trend these days where we are seeing companies offer a modern take on vintage gadgets, like Nintendo who have launched the NES and SNES Classic consoles. You might have heard that Atari was attempting something similar with the Ataribox, and now it looks like we’re one step closer to seeing it made a reality.
In a report from VentureBeat, the Ataribox has been given an official name of the Atari VCS (video computer system) where pre-orders dates are expected to be announced next month. While pricing has yet to be revealed, it has been suggested that it could cost anywhere between $250-$300, making it considerably more expensive than Nintendo’s “Classic” revivals.
However one of the differences between Nintendo and Atari’s offerings is that with Atari, not only will it play classic Atari titles, but it will also be capable of playing (some) modern PC games. This is thanks to the built-in AMD processor and Radeon GPU and a Linux-based operating system, which probably explains why it costs a lot more too.
The console was close to launching last December but at the last minute, Atari hit the pause button claiming that they needed more time to polish it and create a product that the community deserves. Either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled next month for a pre-order date, but in the meantime is this something you might be interested in?

Back in the day feature phones were built like tanks where dropping them several times weren’t an issue and we did not have to worry so much about cracked displays or crack chassis (think Nokia 3310). However these days high-end flagship phones are designed to look amazing, but it seems that companies might have forsaken durability for design.
This is what SquareTrade is trying to find out in their Samsung Galaxy S9 breakability test. In the video above, the company puts the Galaxy S9 through its paces where they drop it several times to see how long it lasts before it breaks. The good news is that when compared to older Samsung Galaxy devices and Apple’s new iPhone X, the Galaxy S9 managed to hold its own.
This isn’t to say that it is indestructible, but rather if you were to drop it know that it should be able to withstand a couple of hard knocks, but don’t expect it to be that way forever. There was also the bend-test where the Galaxy S9 managed to within 230 pounds of pressure while the larger Galaxy S9+ managed to take 210 pounds before cracking.
However given how expensive these phones are, maybe consider investing in a good solid case to help protect it. If you have a few minutes to spare, you can check out the video above to see the breakability test.

If massive battle royale type of games are your thing, you might be interested to learn that Tencent’s PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) is now available on mobile where if you live in the US and Canada, you’ll be able to get your hands on the game for both iOS and Android devices, where presumably it will also eventually make its way to other countries.
PUBG for mobile’s release comes at an interesting time because Epic’s Fortnite Battle Royale has also recently just been released where already it has topped the charts in 13 different countries. However one of the advantages that PUBG has is that it is available on both iOS and Android, whereas Fortnite is currently only available on iOS with an Android version in the works.
Also it seems that the requirements for PUBG is lower where it will support older devices like the iPhone 5s where as Fortnite supports the iPhone 6s and above. However note that according to the app’s description, this is a port of the PC version of the game, although they do boast that it apparently “perfectly recreates” the PC version.
If this sounds like something you might be interested in checking out, then head on over to the iTunes App Store or Google Play for the download.

While Instagram lets users share Instagram posts onto social media networks like Facebook or to Messenger, users can’t actually reshare these posts on Instagram itself. Users have had to turn to third-party software to do that, although we have heard that the company could be testing out an official method.
Now according to a report from TechCrunch, it looks like the resharing feature might come in the form of Stories where users can “quote” Instagram posts in their Stories. Just like “regramming”, users have been resharing the Stories of other Instagram users in their own Stories through unofficial methods, such as screenshotting them and uploading them.
However with this feature, there will be a more official way of resharing them and they will be uploaded in a cleaner manner, as you can see in the screenshots above shared with TechCrunch by one of their readers. Not only does this look neater, but it also provides a direct link to the post itself meaning that if users want to check out the original post, they can do so more efficiently.
Instagram has confirmed that the feature is in testing, “We’re always testing ways to make it easier to share any moment with friends on Instagram,” but stopped short of mentioning whether or not it will be implemented publicly in the future. This is actually not the first time we’re hearing about resharing via Stories, but given that the previous report was also about a feature in testing, it’s hard to say if they will be rolled out in earnest.

When Apple announced ARKit, they also revealed that they had partnered up with several companies to create augmented reality (AR) apps such as IKEA where they launched their “Place” app for iOS devices. The app was initially exclusive to iOS devices but now it looks like it is available for Android devices as well.
Unsurprisingly Android’s version will use Google’s ARCore and is expected to function pretty much the same way. In case it wasn’t already obvious, the IKEA Place app lets users superimpose IKEA furniture in their homes. However as it uses AR technology, it will be more detailed than just slapping an image on the screen and will provide users with a more accurate look as to what certain pieces of furniture might look like.
IKEA is definitely not alone in launching such features as Macy’s has recently launched a similar feature which allows users to place furniture in their home, except in virtual reality. That being said for those who want to check out the app, note that not all devices are supported yet, although Google did state that they are working to bring ARCore onto more devices in the future.
In the meantime for those who might have a compatible device, you will need to download ARCore first and then the IKEA Place app, both of which can be found for free via the Google Play Store.
