SpaceX’s Mars rocket may be built in Los Angeles, a location that would give the company easy access to the water necessary to transport the huge rocket. Unlike the spacecraft it currently constructs in Hawthorne, California, SpaceX won’t be able to transports its Mars rocket, the BFR, using roads. Instead, the company will need to ship the rocket using waterways, … Continue reading

Japan is popular for a great many things and the Shinkansen is one of them. Better known as the bullet train, the Shinkansen lets you cover great distances in a relatively short period of time compared to normal, slower trains. The country has now unveiled a prototype “Supreme” version of its Shinkansen bullet train capable of hitting 186 miles per hour. This version of its bullet train is expected to enter service prior to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Central Japan Railway’s N700S series trains retain the iconic bullet train nose profile but opt for a sharper look. Moreover, there are power sockets for every seat and luggage racks that light up. The seats themselves have been improved with new fabric and more recline. There’s 15 percent more legroom for passengers in first or green class as well.
The nose redesign doesn’t put form over function. It’s actually meant to improve airflow and reduce the sonic boom effect when the train moves through tunnels. However, it will only be able to hit a maximum of 186 miles per hour on the Sanyo Shinkansen line which is the same top speed as the previous trains so no real gains have been made in the speed department.
The Supreme trains will be emblazoned with a large gold “S” which will make them easily distinguishable. According to reports, the latest version of this bullet train is expected to enter service in 2020 on the Tokaido Shinkansen line which connects Tokyo and Shin-Osaka.

You may not remember much about webOS anymore but LG has been tinkering with the platform for a few years now. Its smart TVs, smart refrigerators, and other similar products are powered by this platform that it acquired the rights to from HP in 2013. LG now believes that this platform is ready to move beyond TVs which is why it has announced the launch of the webOS Open Source Edition today.
HP was the first company to try its luck with an open source version of webOS which was released back in 2011. It didn’t really pick up steam and HP ultimately ended up offloading the platform to LG in 2013.
LG first adopted webOS for its smart TV lineup and has since maintained that it has tremendous potential. “webOS has come a long way since then and is now a mature and stable platform ready to move beyond TVs,” said LG Chief Technology Officer Dr. I.P. Park.
LG’s aim with webOS Open Source Edition is to kickstart wider adoption for the platform so that it lands on devices tablets and set-top boxes as well as additional smart devices. The webOS Open Source Edition is now readily available to the public at http://webosose.org
Developers can hit up the link above to download the source code for free. They will also find related tools, guides, and forums on the site as they start working with the open source version of this platform.

Computers don’t have to be big, bulky contraptions that while being quite powerful are restricted in their versatility. The industry understood this decades ago which is why we now have the devices that we have today and not computers that take up an entire room (though we still have them but only for specialized purposes). IBM has now unveiled what it claims to be the world’s smallest computer. It’s even smaller than a grain of salt.
IBM is going to unveil the world’s smallest computer on the first day of its IBM Think 2018 conference. It says that this computer is smaller than a grain of salt and has the same computing power as an x86 chip from 1990. It’s certainly not enough for the tasks that most of us rely on computers for every day but that’s not the purpose of this chip in the first place.
IBM says that this chip is going to have “several hundred thousand transistors” and will cost under ten cents to manufacture. It will be capable of monitoring, communicating, analyzing, and even acting on data.
It’s meant to be a data source for blockchain applications, having the capability to track the shipment of goods, detect theft, fraud, and non-compliance. It will even be able to perform basic artificial intelligence tasks which including sorting through data.
IBM researchers are only testing the first prototype of this chip so it’s unclear at this point in time when we might see it in commercial applications.
