Apple Patents Keyless Keyboard With Haptic Feedback

With onscreen keyboards becoming a feature that many of us are used to by now, the question is will computer makers start adapting this design into laptops? After all being able to eliminate physical keys will help make laptops even thinner than ever. While we’ve yet to really see that happen, Apple might have an idea.

According to a recently discovered patent by Patently Apple, it seems that the Cupertino company has considered creating a “keyless” keyboard. While we suppose such a keyboard would look extremely sleek, how will people touch-type if they can’t feel the keys? Based on the patent, it seems that Apple is planning on using haptic feedback to achieve that.

This is actually not the first time that Apple has relied on haptic feedback as the company has used similar technology with the trackpad in its MacBook laptops, where they no longer depress but give the impression that they do due to haptic feedback. However the patent goes one step further by actually providing haptic feedback based on where the user is pressing, meaning that the whole keyboard won’t just vibrate but will vibrate at specific regions to give the illusion of users pressing a key.

We’re not sure if such a system would be better than a regular keyboard, but like we said a keyless keyboard would no doubt create a more sleek design in laptops. However since this is a patent, there’s really no telling if Apple ever plans on making it a reality.

Bali To Switch Off Internet For 24 Hours For ‘Quiet Reflection’

There is a time and place where using our phones is probably not the best idea, such as in the cinema, at a place of worship, at a funeral, and so on. However it seems that over in Bali, Indonesia, the island will be shutting off internet services for a good 24 hours to mark the island’s annual day of silence.

This will be part of Bali’s Nyepi, also known as Bali’s New Year based on the Balinese calendar. This is seen as a sacred day where even international airports shut down to mark the event. However what’s interesting is that this will also be the first time that this unplugging of the internet has been agreed to, where a request was made last year but denied.

Speaking to tirto.id, Nyoman Sujaya, from the Bali communications ministry said, “It was agreed that internet on mobile phones will be cut. All operators have agreed.” Note that this only applies to mobile internet services, and that regular phone communications and SMS will continue to be active. As for home internet users, it is still being decided as to whether or not it will be cut as well, although services such as security, aviation, hospitals, and disaster agencies will remain unaffected for obvious reasons.

Given how connected we are these days and how much we have come to rely on such services, it will be an interesting experience and it seems that there are some who are looking forward to it. This includes Balinese governor Made Pastika who jokingly told reports, “If the internet is disconnected, people will not die. I will turn off my gadgets during Nyepi.”

Delaware Testing Mobile Driver Licenses

These days it’s all about streamlining, where why have multiple gadgets when one will suffice, right? This is a concept that many companies like Apple are aiming for, where our smartphones can play music, surf the internet, act as a communications tool, and also store credit card and loyalty card information.

Now it seems that over in Delaware, the state has launched a pilot program where they are seeing if mobile driver licenses are feasible. Given that physical licenses can be lost or stolen, having a mobile version certainly cuts down on that possibility, although we suppose you could have your phone stolen too.

However the upside is that because our phones are designed to be secure, having a mobile driver license means that only you and law enforcement officials will be able to view it, versus a physical card where anyone who opens up your wallet can take a peek at your personal information.

As it stands this is a pilot program as the goal is to find out whether or not our phones will be secure enough to implement such a scheme. This is because not all phones were created equal, where higher-end devices tend to offer more security features, like iris-scanning or facial recognition. This is also not the first time that we’re seeing a state consider turning our driver licenses mobile, where a few years ago Iowa also made similar considerations.

Safari Exploits Demonstrated At Pwn20wn 2018

It is rare if not impossible that software is completely invulnerable to hacks or exploits, which is why updates are important and why companies reward developers who discover bugs or possible hacks. In fact recently at the Pwn20wn 2018 event, several Safari exploits were demonstrated.

During the event, security researchers who were in attendance managed to exploit Safari not just once, but twice, with one exploit being successfully taken advantage of within the competition’s 30-minute, 3 try guidelines, while the second exploit took four attempts. Regardless of the number of attempts, the fact that these exploits existed is the key takeaway.

One of the hacks involved overwriting the kernel and execute code that exploited the browser, while the other used a couple of Safari vulnerabilities to execute a sandbox escape. The successful researchers were awarded $65,000 and $55,000 respectively. However the good news is that naturally representatives for the companies were in attendance, including Apple.

They were also made aware of all security vulnerabilities that were discovered during the competition so that they can be patched in future software updates. It is unclear as to when these updates will be issued, but hopefully these exploits aren’t too severe where they might have disastrous consequences if exploited for real.

Google Lens For Google Photos Now Rolling Out To iOS Users

About a week ago, Google began rolling out the Lens feature to Google Photos for Android users. If you were worried that this might be an Android-only feature, fret not because it looks like Google has started to roll out the Lens feature for iOS users as well. The release is done in stages where Google expects it will be available for all users next week.

For those unfamiliar with Google Lens, this is like an extension of Google Search except that it is more about recognizing images. For example Google Lens can be used to recognize business cards which in turn lets users save the phone number and address to their contacts. Users can also use Lens to search for books and get reviews.

It can also be used to identify a landmark or building which might be handy if you’re traveling and you’re trying to learn more about the places around you, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the name. Lens can also detail things like paintings, so if you’re in the museum you’ll be able to learn more about a painting if you’re interested.

To access Lens in Google Photos, users just need to open a photo and tap the square camera icon in the bottom toolbar of an image. It will take about a second or so to analyze and then the results will be shown.
