Intel Is Redesigning Its Processors To Improve Security

Intel and the wider technology industry were shaken by the Spectre CPU flaw that was discovered last year. The company has since released microcode updates for “100 percent” of its products launched in the past five years that require protection against this vulnerability and it wil continue to address the Meltdown vulnerability through future software updates. Intel is now looking toward the future and in a bid to prevent such vulnerabilities from surfacing in the future, the company is redesigning its processors for additional security.

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich has said that Intel is making changes to its hardware design to prevent this from happening in the future. The company has redesigned parts of the processor “to introduce new levels of protection” against Spectre variants.

Krzanich says that you can think of this partitioning as additional “protective walls” between apps and user privilege levels to stop bad actors in their tracks. These changes are going to be implemented with Intel’s next-generation Xeon and 8th Generation Core processors that are going to be shipped in the second half of this year.

“As we bring these new products to market, ensuring that they deliver the performance improvements people expect from us is critical. Our goal is to offer not only the best performance, but also the best secure performance,” he said.

Those who have devices with existing Intel processors will continue to rely on software updates for protection against Spectre variants.

Microsoft Could Get Into Game Streaming

Microsoft has revealed that it has set up a new cloud gaming division. This is a crucial move that it has made rather quietly, a new cloud gaming division means that Microsoft may have plans to enter the game streaming space. According to the report, Microsoft has been building up to this with acquisitions of smaller companies such as PlayFab which was focused on game development in the cloud before it was picked up by the Redmond-based giant.

Game streaming might still be a nascent market but there are players who have been able to make it work. Look no further than Sony’s PlayStation Now service while NVIDIA has made waves with its GeForce Now game streaming service as well, even though it’s not quite out of beta just yet.

The Verge reports that Microsoft already has a basic idea of what a cloud game streaming service would entail with Xbox Game Pass, the company’s Netflix-style subscription service that gives subscribers access to a library of more than 100 games for the Xbox One.

Microsoft is far from announcing a game streaming service at this point in time. The report only mentions that the wheels are in motion but it might be a while before there’s a formal announcement. Microsoft has only said that it’s looking at multiple ways to bring games to players on different devices but precisely when it intends to do that remains to be seen.

Google Play Store Video Ads Test Begins

Nobody likes seeing ads but they’re hard to avoid with free-to-use services. If you weren’t satisfied with being bombarded by ads while surfing the web or watching videos on YouTube, rejoice, because soon you may see ads in the Google Play Store as well. Not just any ads, mind you, Google is testing video ads in the Play Store. Google has confirmed today that it’s testing a new ads format for the Play Store.

The images that Google has provided today suggest that these video ads in Google Play won’t autoplay, which is the least that it can do to ensure a bearable user experience with video ads. Just imagine, though, being taken by surprise by an autoplaying video ad as you’re scrolling through the Play Store for new apps.

It’s not like you don’t already encounter ads in the Play Store. They pop up in the search results and in the Home feed occassionally, Google says that ads in the Play Store have resulted in more than 10 billion app installs for developers.

Google is also experimenting with rewarded ads which will allow users to watch an extra clip to earn in-game incentives such as credits or power-ups. It’s going to let developers place rewarded ads in the Play Store as well during this test. Whether or not it will widely roll out this new ad format depends on the feedback Google gets.
