YouTube To Use ‘Information Cues’ To Combat Fake News

While social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have been criticized for allowing fake news to run rampant, more recently it has been discovered that YouTube is also home to fake news and false information, where clear and obvious hoaxes have made it into YouTube’s trending video section, which in turn encourages more viewing.

However YouTube appears to have a plan to deal with such hoaxes in the future. Speaking at SXSW 2018, YouTube’s CEO Susan Wojcicki revealed that YouTube will be using “information cues” as a means to combat false information. These cues will appear in a text box that will link to third-party websites such as Wikipedia where users can read up more on certain topics.

This is similar to some of Facebook’s efforts, where they will provide users with links to websites that either debunk the fake news or offer up more factual information. That being said, Wojcicki did make it clear that YouTube is not a news organization, and that they simply want to deliver the right information to their users.

According to a YouTube spokesperson who confirmed the company’s plans, “We’re always exploring new ways to battle misinformation on YouTube. At SXSW, we announced plans to show additional information cues, including a text box linking to third-party sources around widely accepted events, like the moon landing. These features will be rolling out in the coming months, but beyond that we don’t have any additional information to share at this time.”

Latest Firefox Release Lets Users Block Notifications

These days browsers come with push notifications to let us know when a site is trying to access our location, or to ask if we want to allow a website to send us notifications. In a way it’s good because this can help protect the user’s privacy in some instances, but if you hate these notifications especially if a site you’re viewing is a one-off thing, then Mozilla’s latest Firefox release might be worth checking out.

In the latest release of Firefox 59, it seems that Mozilla has given the browser the ability to block notifications. This means that if you don’t want to be reminded of certain things or be asked for permission, you can block those notifications. This doesn’t mean that you consent to all site requests by default, but rather you would be ignoring them outright. Like we said, sometimes you just want to quickly check on something and don’t want to have to deal with these notifications getting in your way.

That being said, this shouldn’t be confused with a recent report which suggested that in-page popup blockers could be coming to Firefox soon. Popup blockers aren’t new but Mozilla’s version will apparently be smart enough to detect and block popups as opposed to relying on a predefined blacklist. In any case the latest version of Firefox should already be available for download, so head on over to Mozilla’s website for the details.

Ecobee Switch+ Comes With Amazon’s Alexa Built Into It

Light switches were designed to be simple and straightforward; flick it on or off and you’re done. However Ecobee wants to try and make it a little “smarter” and has since launched the Ecobee Switch+ which will probably be one of the smartest light switches that you’ll ever own, at least until someone else comes along and one ups them.

While we have seen “smart” switches, the Ecobee Switch+ probably takes the cake because it actually comes with Amazon’s Alexa digital voice assistant built into it. We’re not just talking about it being compatible with Alexa through devices like the Echo speakers, but it actually has Alexa inside of it. This means that even if you don’t own the Echo speaker, you can use your voice and command the Switch+ to do all sorts of things that Alexa can.

Naturally this would include the ability to turn your lights on and off, play music, ask for the weather, and so on. It even comes with built-in motion sensors that can tell when someone is in the room and will turn the lights on, or it will turn the lights off after it detects that no one is around. This can be useful in saving electricity especially if you’re the forgetful type.

However despite Alexa integration, the Switch+ is not exclusive to Amazon and will play nicely with HomeKit, Google Assistant, SmartThings, and IFTTT. Unfortunately with it being so smart, it is pretty damn expensive as far as light switches are concerned and will be priced at $99 and is available for pre-order on Amazon with a release set for the 26th of March.

Google Images Will Add Captions For Mobile Search

When you do an image search on Google, sometimes the results might not necessarily be what you want and that the results could be even more confusing. However the good news for Google users is that it looks like the company will be trying to make things a bit clearer and more contextual for users.

This will come in the form of captions that will be added to Google Image search results on mobile devices. As you can see in the screenshot above, the left shows the old version of Google Images where images are displayed based on what you have searched for. On the right are images with a caption that gives users a bit more context as to what they are looking at.

According to Google, “This week we’re adding captions to image results, showing you the title of the web page where each image is published. This extra piece of information gives you  more context so you can easily find out what the image is about and whether the website would contain more relevant content for your needs.”

The changes should be living and rolling out to users so if you do use Google Image search on your mobile, this could be worth checking out.

Guy Hacks Nintendo Switch to Work on an 80s Sony Watchman

The Sony’s 1986 Watchman portable TV and the Nintendo Switch just got together, and the result is pretty awesome. What’s great is that this hack is collector-friendly, because you don’t have to open or make any modifications to the classic portable TV to make it work.

YouTuber My Mate VINCE came up with this interesting pairing. First, he took the Switch controller and wrapped it around the Watchman, securing it with a cable tie. He then connected the HDMI output on the Nintendo Switch’s base station to an analog converter, then piped that into an old VCR which converted the signal to RF. He also wired the VCR to an antenna with a signal booster, creating a low-power pirate TV station that the Watchman could be tuned into. How clever is that?

Sure you could just use the Nintendo Switch’s own screen, but where’s the fun in that? It’s a hack, so you have to hack it. It’s kind of amazing to see modern Nintendo games on that tiny black and white screen. The images look much better than I would have expected them to. I think this is proof that the Sony Watchman’s screen was indeed ahead of its time.

It looks great, but the hardest part of playing games on this thing is the size of the screen. You’ll definitely want a magnifying glass to enlarge the action if you decide to try this.
