Sony Explains Why They Removed The Xperia XZ2’s Headphone Jack

These days ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack on smartphones is becoming increasingly common. This is exactly what Sony did with the Xperia XZ2 that was launched at MWC 2018, and it looks like Sony has recently come forward with an explanation as to why they have decided to remove the port.

According to Sony who posted an FAQ on its website, “This is part of the shift to our new Ambient Flow design language. In order to create the beautiful seamless design, our designers needed to remove the headphone jack. Plus, we’re aware of the major market trend toward wireless headphones over wired headphones.”

It is an interesting explanation, although the sentiment that we’re seeing is that not many appear to buy into what Sony is claiming, or at least they think it is a flimsy excuse. That being said, we suppose this was an eventuality, just like we saw with many ports and peripherals from back in the day. Let’s not forget Apple caused quite a stir when they stopped including optical drives with their laptops, but looking around today, how many people actually still require a CD for software installs?

Sony also points out that they do include an adapter that will allow users to connect 3.5mm headphones to the phone via a cable if they truly wish to do so, although presumably the company would prefer if you bought their wireless headphones.

Netflix Could Be Interested In A ‘60 Minutes’ Style News Show

With there being so many news platforms at the moment, we’re sure that there are some who view Netflix as a place to getaway from all of it. The video streaming platform plays host to a ton of TV shows, comedies, action movies, horror, documentaries, and so on, but if there is one thing that’s missing, it would be the news.

However in a report from MarketWatch, it seems that Netflix could be interested in creating a news show for its platform. However instead of something more traditional that you might expect from the BBC, Fox, CNN, and so on, Netflix’s approach will be similar to CBS’s “60 Minutes” or ABC’s “20/20” show.

This was revealed by a TV executive who worked with Netflix on a documentary series and where they told MarketWatch under condition of anonymity, “Netflix have spotted a hole in the market for a current affairs TV show encompassing both sides of the political divide and are seeking to fill it.”

While Netflix has yet to confirm anything, it does seem to be in line with what the platform has been doing in recent times. Netflix has signed comedian talk show hosts such as David Letterman, Joel McHale, Hasan Minhaj, Michelle Wolf, and Norm MacDonald for shows that are meant to satirize the news. So for them to create a “60 Minutes” like segment wouldn’t be a stretch.

No word on when this particular show will be launched, but what do you guys think? Is this something you would be interested in watching on Netflix?

Amazon Reportedly Considered Acquiring ‘Texture’ Before Apple

The other day Apple announced that they would be acquiring digital magazine platform Texture. However in a report from Bloomberg, it appears that Apple was not the first company to consider making a bid on Texture, and that Amazon had apparently considered acquiring the company as well.

It is unclear as to why Amazon did not go through with their acquisition, or if maybe they did make an offer except that Apple’s offer might have been more tempting. Unsurprisingly neither Amazon, Apple, nor Texture offered any comments with regards to the report, but Amazon’s interest shouldn’t be too surprising.

About four years ago, Amazon acquired comics distribution platform ComiXology, so for Amazon to be interested in magazines doesn’t seem like a stretch. Amazon later introduced ComiXology Unlimited which allowed users unlimited access to comics for a monthly fee, which once again is similar to what Texture was offering, so it is possible that Amazon was looking for another business to complement ComiXology.

In any case we guess we’ll never know what really happened, and with that being said, it is also unclear as to what Apple has planned for Texture. Some are saying it will be part of Apple News, but given Apple’s penchant for shuttering services after acquiring them, we wouldn’t be surprised if Texture were to be given the same treatment as well.

Broadcom To Formally Abandon Plans To Acquire Qualcomm

For a brief moment it seemed like Broadcom was digging their heels in and going after Qualcomm in a bid to acquire the company. Unfortunately the US government has since stepped in to block their bid, citing national security as a concern. However we had heard that despite this, Broadcom had plans to fight the block, but not anymore.

According to a report from Bloomberg, it seems that Broadcom could be formally abandoning their plans to acquire Qualcomm. The announcement is said to be made later today so we guess we’ll have to wait and see. That being said, it would have been interesting to see what the mobile landscape could look like if Broadcom were to be successful.

Qualcomm had initially resisted Broadcom’s attempts to acquire the company, but later it appeared that they were softening up and seemed to be open to the idea. However like we said, this did not matter as the US government had decided to block Broadcom’s bid. Apparently there are concerns about Broadcom’s close ties with Chinese communication companies, and that Broadcom’s acquisition of Qualcomm could give these companies an unfair competition.

Interestingly enough there have also been reports that Intel could be interested in acquiring Broadcom. Whether or not that will go through now that Broadcom is no longer bidding on Qualcomm is unclear.
