Canon’s mirrorless efforts have felt a bit lackluster, where it seemed like the company was merely responding to other camera makers like Sony, Fujifilm, and Olympus. However as mirrorless is starting to become more popular, especially amongst professionals, Canon is looking to step up their game.
During Canon’s Corporate Strategy Conference (via CanonWatch), it seems that the company is planning on going on the offensive in the mirrorless camera market. The company writes, “We will go on the offensive and work to expand our sales in the mirrorless camera market. This will allow us to reach our goal of 50% market share of the entire interchangeable-lens camera market.”
Those are very ambitious goals, especially when you consider that Canon isn’t exactly the name that comes to mind when you think of mirrorless camera systems. However this does lineup with previous reports where it was stated that Canon would be shifting more focus towards mirrorless cameras.
There are also rumors that the company could be working on a high-end mirrorless with a full-frame sensor that could better compete against the likes of Sony. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen, but we wouldn’t be surprised as there are also rumors that Nikon could be looking to develop something similar.
