Google Home’s Routines Feature One Step Closer To Being Released

Last month it was reported that Google Home would be getting a new feature called Routines which acts as macros, where a single command will allow users to pull off multiple actions at once. Google did not provide any specifics as to when the feature will be released, except that it would be ready “in a few weeks”.

However it looks like we could be close to seeing it released, according to a report from Droid-Life in which they have spotted support pages for the upcoming feature on Google’s website. This seems to hint that the feature could be arriving soon, otherwise why would Google bother uploading the support pages so soon, right?

For those unfamiliar, Routines will be launched with six routines out of the door. This includes, “good morning, bedtime, leaving home, I’m home, commuting to work, and commuting home,” all of which can be customized to the user’s liking and preference. For example users can use the “good morning” routine with Google Home to disable their phone’s silent mode, turn on the lights, adjust the thermostat, all within a single command.

The same can be said for “leaving home”, where users can use it to enable home security cameras, motion sensors, turn off the lights and thermostat, and so on. Assuming the feature will be rolling out soon, users can look forward to it in the Google Home app via the “More Settings” section.

New Hearthstone Expansion ‘The Witchwood’ Announced

Based on Blizzard’s release schedule, we know that a new Hearthstone expansion was in the works, and the good news for Hearthstone players is that it looks like the new expansion has since been officially announced. Dubbed “The Witchwood”, it seems that the latest expansion will be based on Gilneas.

For those unfamiliar with World of Warcraft, Gilneas is the part of the starting area for the Worgen, a race for the Alliance faction. According to Blizzard, “The city of Gilneas once lived in uneasy peace with the sprawling, ancient forest that looms beyond its walls. Though the wilderness was grim and forbidding, the citizens of Gilneas—being no ordinary folks—roved and hunted there without fear. That was before a darkness began to fester in the heart of the forest. . . . Before the curse of The Witchwood!”

As expected the game will feature a bunch of new cards, 135 to be exact. It will also introduce some new mechanics and Legendaries. Blizzard is also promoting the game by offering gamers three free packs and a random Class legendary card, both of which will be from the expansion, just by logging into the game after the expansion has been released.

As for a release date, Blizzard hasn’t offered any specifics save for a release in mid-April which is pretty soon. The expansion packs are now available for pre-order where those who pre-order will be given an additional 20 packs as a bonus along with a “In a Dark Wood” card back.

Apple Music Now Boasts 38 Million Subscribers

Earlier this year, Spotify announced that they were home to about 70 million subscribers which pretty much puts them on top of the list as far as music streaming platforms are concerned. However it seems that Apple is catching up, and fast because the company has confirmed that Apple Music now has 38 million subscribers.

This number was revealed by Apple’s SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue during an interview at SXSW. Cue boasted that Apple managed to add an additional 2 million new subscribers in a little over a month. Note that the 38 million figure is for full subscribers, meaning those who are subscribed and paying. It does not take into account the additional 8 million users who are using the service on a trial basis, according to Cue.

Exactly how many of those 8 million subscribers eventually become full paying subscribers is anyone’s guess, but as previously reported, Apple Music’s growth has some believing that Apple has what it takes to overtake Spotify by this summer. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but it’s hard to ignore the platform’s growth.

That being said, there does seem to be signs that Spotify could be looking to diversify where a job listing has hinted that the company might be interested in expanding into hardware by creating its own smart speaker.

Apple Acquires Magazine Subscription Service ‘Texture’

Back in the day things were usually bought piecemeal, meaning that if you wanted a book, you’d have to buy that book specifically. If you wanted to watch a movie, you’d have to buy/rent that movie specifically, and so on. However these days subscriptions services are on the rise with streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Hulu, Netflix, and so on.

Apple seems to be well aware of this fact because the company has announced that they have acquired digital magazine subscription service Texture. For those unfamiliar, Texture is a digital magazine subscription service that some have likened to the Netflix for magazines. For the price of a monthly subscription, users will be able to browse as many magazine titles as they want, assuming that they are part of Texture’s catalogue.

The platform boasts over 200 magazines which means that there should be something for everyone. According to Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, “We’re excited Texture will join Apple, along with an impressive catalog of magazines from many of the world’s leading publishers. We are committed to quality journalism from trusted sources and allowing magazines to keep producing beautifully designed and engaging stories for users.”

That being said, it is unclear as to what Apple plans on doing with the app/service now that they have acquired it. Apple has a habit of acquiring companies and products only to kill them off later or transform them into something else, like what they did with Beats Music and Workflow after acquiring them.
