Instagram Could Be Returning To Chronological Timeline In Latest Beta

Like how many social media platforms start, Instagram originally relied on a chronological timeline where the latest posts would be displayed first. Instagram later changed this to a contextual timeline where based on your likes and preferences, Instagram would order the posts based on that.

This meant that a post from a few days ago still has the chance to show up at the top of your feed. However it seems Instagram could be considering returning to its chronological roots, or at least that’s according to a video uploaded by Instagram user @jackharding (via Resource) where it shows his feed in chronological order.

Note that this feature seems to be part of the beta and only available to a limited number of users, at least for now. It is unclear as to whether Instagram will be doing away with the current timeline in favor of chronological, or if Instagram will give users the option of viewing their feed chronologically, which is what many were asking Instagram to give at the start.

It is also possible that this is a test and nothing more, and that it will never amount to anything. Either way we’ll have to wait and see, but in the meantime is Instagram possibly bringing back the chronological timeline something you would be interested in?

Survey Finds 22% Of iPhone Owners Plan To Upgrade In 2018

Apple’s iPhones are getting more expensive which means that for iPhone owners looking to upgrade, doing so on an annual basis can be rather costly. However despite the costs, Apple customer upgrades appear to be remaining somewhat steady, according to a recent survey conducted by Gene Munster’s Loup Venture.

According to the survey, it was discovered that 22% of current iPhone owners plan on upgrading to the new iPhones that will be released in 2018. This is slightly down compared to last year’s 23%, but a major improvement over 2016 where only 15% said that they were planning on upgrading.

However it should be noted that customers planning to upgrade versus those who actually do are two very different things. There could be a variety of factors that might have changed a customer’s mind prior to the upgrade. That being said, Munster claims that iPhone upgrades are starting to become so predictable to the point where he suggests that investors might start to see it as a subscription kind of model.

Some analysts have predicted that Apple will enjoy a supercycle with the launch of the iPhone X, although that doesn’t seem to have come to pass yet. However Munster is leaving open the possibility that it could still happen in FY19 where Apple is rumored to launch an even bigger iPhone X.

‘I’m Back’ Accessory Turns Analog SLRs Into Digital Hybrids

While many photographers might extol the virtues of shooting analog and film, claiming that it produces “warmer” images and has a certain tone/feel to it that digital can’t replicate, it is hard to ignore some of the downsides to shooting with film. This includes the inability to check photos after you’ve taken them, the time and money spent developing the film, and also the low storage capacity.

If you’re looking for the best of both worlds, a Kickstarter campaign for an accessory called “I’m Back” has been launched (via DPreview). This is an attachment for your analog SLR camera that will turn it into a digital hybrid where it will come with a 2-inch touchscreen and also gives your analog camera WiFi capabilities to allow users to transfer photos. It also comes with a 16MP Panasonic sensor and a Novatek 96660 image processor.

Basically it kind of “hijacks” your analog camera to take advantage of its lens, while the attachment converts those images taken into digital, thus maintaining the look and feel of film but without some of the disadvantages. The attachment will play nicely with quite a few brands and models, including those from Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Leica, Pentax, and so on, with a universal adapter allowing users to use it with almost any 35mm camera including Lomography cameras.

If you’re interested in pledging your support, you can head on over to its Kickstarter page where a pledge of 225 euros will nab you the fully assembled kit upon its release.

US Government Blocks Broadcom’s Bid For Qualcomm

Broadcom has been trying to takeover Qualcomm, and if successful, they would form one of the largest chip companies in the world. However it seems that concerns about a monopoly wasn’t what the US government was worried about, but rather what Broadcom’s takeover could mean for Chinese companies. So much so that the Committee on Foreign Investment has blocked Broadcom’s bid on Qualcomm.

Apparently it seems that the committee has determined that Broadcom’s possible takeover could mean that it could benefit Chinese companies in the race to produce next-gen mobile technology and eliminate an important supplier of telecoms technology to US federal defense agencies, some of the concerns of which were reported last week.

Given that the bid has now been blocked, it is unclear as to what Broadcom plans to do moving forwards, although according to the rumors, it has been suggested that Intel could be interested in acquiring Broadcom in what appears to be a love triangle of sorts. This is not the first time that the US government has expressed their concern over Chinese companies.

Earlier US intelligence agencies had warned against purchasing Chinese branded smartphones, where it was reported that they had also encouraged major US carriers to drop their deals with companies such as Huawei.
