Intel Wants To Buy The Company That’s Trying To Buy Qualcomm

Broadcom made an unexpected and unsolicited bid to acquire Qualcomm a couple of months ago for over $100 billion but its initial bid was rejected by the chipmaker. A revised bid was later submitted and was also rejected by Qualcomm. There has been a lot of back and forth between the two companies since then and while the door still remains open to a deal, a new report claims that Intel is now considering a bid for Broadcom, the company that’s trying to buy Qualcomm.

Citing people familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Intel is considering multiple options including an acquisition bid for Broadcom. However, the report does mention that it’s not guaranteed that such an offer is going to be made with one source even predicting that it’s going to be unlikely.

One can understand why Intel might be considering this step. Even though it has been one of the largest semiconductor companies on the planet for decades, Intel doesn’t really have a presence in the smartphone SoC market. If Broadcom’s acquisition of Qualcomm works out, the combined entity would become a much larger competitor for Intel for components other than smartphone processors, such as cellular radios.

So it would be in Intel’s interests if Broadcom’s acquisition bid for Qualcomm falls through and the company might not make a move for the former then but if it goes the other way, then Intel’s reportedly open to the option of acquiring Broadcom.

Motorola Reportedly Canceling the Moto X5

Lenovo-owned Motorola was expected to launch a successor to last year’s Moto X4 at some point this year but if a new report is to be believed, the company has now shelved plans to launch the handset’s successor which would have been called the Moto X5. There have been substantial leaks already concerning the Moto X5 which suggests that the development was already quite far along before the company reportedly decided to cancel the device.

Android Police hears from a source familiar with Motorola’s plans that the company has “completely abandoned” its plans to launch the Moto X5. This is apparently part of its recent downsizing of its engineering team based in Chicago.

Lenovo had acquired Motorola from Google a few years ago in hopes that the latter will bring in more profit for its smartphone division but that hasn’t really happened. Lenovo has since trimmed Motorola’s workforce and presence across the globe significantly but a turnaround remains elusive.

The report also adds that the company will now be increasing its focus on E, G, and Z series devices for now. The possibility that it might bring back the Moto X lineup at some point in the future exists but it may not happen anytime soon if this information is accurate.

Motorola is also said to be moving its focus away from niche mods and will focus more on products that have a higher chance of turning a profit.

Barack Obama Could Get His Own Netflix Show

Having left the White House after serving two terms as the country’s president, Barack Obama might have his sights set on a different kind of job now. According to a new report, the former president is in talks with a “production” deal with Netflix. The possibilities reportedly being discussed include him serving as a producer on a show about inspiring American stories or as a moderator of a new show on Netflix.

CNN reports, citing a source familiar with the discussions, that Obama and Netflix are in discussions concerning a “production partnership” but cautions that a deal hasn’t been reached as yet. If one is reached then it would see both Obama and his wife Michelle being involved in producing a show for Netflix.

A deal would be a win-win situation for both parties, at least on paper. The Obamas will get a platform that reaches a substantial audience globally while Netflix will be able to provide exclusive programming with the former president’s name on it. That’s the kind of thing that sells subscriptions.

A separate report in the New York Times mentions that “The number of episodes and the formats for the shows have not been decided.” It reported that there are two potential shows being discussed. The other might feature Michelle Obama championing her White House causes which included health and nutrition.
