Facebook To ‘Fact-Check’ Photos & Videos For Fake News, Hoaxes

Facebook (and other social media platforms) have a fake news problem now where thanks to the ability to share easily and quickly at a press of a button, fake news and hoaxes can be easily spread. Sometimes this isn’t done on purpose, but intentional or not, it does cause a bit of a problem.

We know that Facebook is coming up with ways to cut down on fake news, and according to a report from Reuters, Facebook will soon be fact-checking photos and videos uploaded in an attempt to cut down on fake news and hoaxes. This program has already begun in France with assistants from AFP and it is expected to expand to more countries and partners soon.

This was confirmed by  Tessa Lyons, a product manager at Facebook. However Lyons did not mention what kind of criteria Facebook or AFP will be using to evaluate photos or videos, and how much could a photo or video be edited before it might be considered to be fake. Like we said, Facebook has come up with various ways in the past to combat fake news.

This includes flagging articles that might be in dispute, showing articles that have been fact-checked, and also clamping down on users who tend to “overshare”, which apparently based on research suggests that people who share more than 50 times a day tend to share low-quality content.

Google To Shut Down Its Goo.gl URL Shortener Next Year

If you didn’t know, Google has a URL shortening service where they take long URLs and converts them into shorter ones using the goo.gl link. This helps keep things neat, especially if you’re sharing them in emails, messages, social media, and so on. Unfortunately it looks like Google will be shutting that service down.

In an announcement on its blog, Google claims that over the years since the feature was launched, people have been finding content on the internet differently than they did before, leading them to believe that maybe the need for a URL shortening service might no longer be necessary.

According to Google, “To refocus our efforts, we’re turning down support for goo.gl over the coming weeks and replacing it with Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL). FDLs are smart URLs that allow you to send existing and potential users to any location within an iOS, Android or web app. We’re excited to grow and improve the product going forward.”

The good news is that if you’re still using a goo.gl URL shortener, Google claims that these links will continue to redirect users to their intended destination after the service has been sunset. However following that, users won’t be able to access other goo.gl features and its console. In the meantime the service will continue to operate and users can still create short links until the 30th of March, 2019.

Huawei Isn’t Giving Up On The US Market Just Yet

2018 was supposed to be Huawei’s year where they were supposed to partner up with various US carriers to officially launch their phones in the US market. However that fell through as US lawmakers and intelligence agencies have warned against buying devices from Huawei. In fact recently it was reported that Best Buy would stop stocking up on Huawei’s phones.

However despite these obstacles and challenges, Huawei is still not giving up on the US market just yet. Speaking to CNET in an interview via email, the CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group Richard Yu said, “We are committed to the US market and to earning the trust of US consumers by staying focused on delivering world-class products and innovation. We would never compromise that trust.”

When asked about what Huawei thought about the allegations that the company’s products are being used to spy on Americans, Yu said, “The security risk concerns are based on groundless suspicions and are quite frankly unfair. We welcome an open and transparent discussion if it is based on facts.”

That being said, it seems that the US government is seriously against Huawei’s products. Before it felt more like an advice against using Huawei products, but recently a report suggested that federal subsidies for carriers might be blocked if they use Huawei equipment.
