TwitchCon 2018 Date And Venue Confirmed

The very first TwitchCon took place back in 2015 and it has been hosted annually ever since at different venues in California. The first edition took place in San Francisco followed by San Diego and Long Beach in 2016 and 2017. The TwitchCon 2018 date and venue have now been confirmed and the convention is being brought back to the Bay Area this year.

TwitchCon 2018 is going to take place from October 26-28 at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. TwitchCon director Krystal Herring said as with the previous three conventions, the company is keeping things fresh this year with a new location.

“And since San Jose has a proven track record of successfully holding major events with plenty of great places to eat and stay, it’s exciting to give our attendees a new city to explore for all of the expected community meetups,” Herring said.

The convention continues to pull in more people annually. Attendance has surged from 20,000 back in 2015 to almost 50,000 in 2017. One can expect that it’s going to pull in even more people this year.

Twitch hasn’t revealed any details about tickets so far but it did offer early bird options in late May last year for the 2017 convention so it’s likely that we’ll get to see those options around the same time this year as well.

School In Ghana Doesn’t Have PCs, Teacher Draws Windows On Blackboard Instead For Students

A teacher in Ghana has received global recognition after photos of him teaching his students about Microsoft Word went viral. Since the school didn’t have PCs which could be used to teach the students about Windows and Microsoft Word, the information and communication technology teacher Richard Appiah Akoto decided to draw an entire Microsoft Word processing window on a blackboard with multi-colored chalk.

Akoto is the ICT teacher at the Betenase M/A Junior High School in Sekyedomase, which is about two and a half hours north of the city of Kumasi. The school doesn’t have any computers even though 14 and 15 year old students are expected to pass a national exam with ICT as one of the subjects. They can’t progress to high school if they don’t pass that exam.

Akoto posted pictures of himself drawing a Word processing window in class on Facebook and has received global admiration after the photos went viral showing how he tried to explain computers to his students even without having an actual computer.

“This is not my first time [of drawing] it. I have been doing it anytime I am in the classroom…I like posting pictures on Facebook so I just felt like [sharing it],” Akoto said.

Cameroonian tech entrepreneur Rebecca Enonchong pointed him out to Microsoft on Twitter and the company promised to equip him with “a device from one of our partners, and access to our MCE program” aside from free professional development resources. However, Akoto says that the school needs about 50 computers for his classes to really impart ICT education to the students.

Akoto does have a personal laptop but he doesn’t use it to teach in class as the features are different from what’s in the official syllabus for students. He’s required to teach students with a desktop as their reference, how they have to connect a system unit and monitor, and how they have to boot it. “If you bring a charged laptop to class and just press the power button, then all of a sudden, everything will be on”, that does not work, he says.

2 X 2 Rubik’s Cube Made out of Cheddar Cheese: Solve, Then Eat

When I was a kid, solving a Rubik’s Cube was tough. Only geniuses could do it. The rest of us had to learn cheats just so we could look smart. These days it seems everyone is solving these puzzles with ease. They are even making their own. And sometimes they are made out of some really weird materials. Here’s Rubik’s cubist Tony Fisher demonstrating a very edible 2 x 2 Rubik’s Cube he made out of cheddar cheese.

I have to say, he did a gouda job. I would have gotten feta up with it halfway through. Since it is cheese we are talking about here, he had to use colored thumbtacks to identify the sides. Hope no one ate it thinking they were edible. The only problem with this cube is that the more you turn it, the more cheese crumbs end upon the floor. No problem if you have animals. My cats would love it if I played with this cube.

Some might say it’s cheesy to use cheddar in this build. It’s not that Tony is anti-brie, he’s just pro-volone. See, now the cheese jokes are out of hand. I admit it, I’m a real muenster! Maybe a gorgon… zola that is!
