The Morning After: Google's next new chat app

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Another day, another chat app from Google. After Hangouts Chat, we have more news from MWC and some tips on how to get the most battery life out of your mobile devices.

Nokia Creates A Smart Jacket Designed For First Responders

We know that Google is working on smart clothing through Project Jacquard where they partnered with Levi’s for a smart jacket. However Google isn’t alone in pursuing smarter clothing as at MWC 2018, Nokia took the wraps off a smart jacket created in collaboration with South Korean fashion brand Kolon that was designed for first responders.

Dubbed the the CHASE LifeTech FR (“CHASE” stands for connected health and safety equipment), this looks like a jacket that on first glance seems like the kind of uniform that first responders might wear. It is bright and visible and comes with reflectors which could help them be seen by cars in dark situations like on highways or small roads.

However like we said this is a smart jacket. It will provide its wearer with access to data such as heart rate, temperature, GPS/location, and there is also an accelerometer built into it. The version that was demoed at MWC 2018 had sections on the sleeve and chest area that allowed users to swap out modules, which could in theory make it customizable to different needs. For example paramedics might have need for certain sensors or modules that a firefighter might not, and so on.

Unfortunately for now it seems that the jacket is more of a proof of concept rather than an actual product that can be bought, but there are plans to put it into production in the next 12-18 months.

Sobro Has A Smart Table For Your Bedside

Bedside tables are relatively straightforward pieces of furniture, where they serve as a place for you to place your phone, a reading lamp, a glass of water, and so on. It is an uncomplicated piece of furniture, but it seems that over on Indigogo, Sobro Design has launched a campaign for the Smart Side Table (via iMore).

This is a small table designed to be placed by your bedside (or the side of a couch, wherever) and as its name suggests, will come with various “smarts”. The table’s surface itself will come with an integrated wireless charging pad that can support two phones. There are also f our USB charging ports, and two 120v outlets at the back with cord management.

That covers your charging needs, but what about your drinks? The bottom of the table will feature a thermoelectric cooler drawer that keeps your favorite drinks chilly. There is also a built-in LED on the bottomside of the table which will help provide some soft illumination so that you don’t trip at night or when you’ve just woken up in the morning.

Last but not least, there are also built-in Bluetooth speakers which means that you can enjoy your music or movies without having to plug in additional speakers. It will also come with a bunch of storage options for your other items, so there’s that. Unfortunately in terms of pricing, it is pretty damn expensive as it will retail for $900. However early Indiegogo backers can pledge a minimum of $299 to get as much as 66% off the retail price.

Microsoft Teams Now Allow Users To Add Guest Accounts

When Microsoft announced its Microsoft Teams, it was quickly seen as a competitor to Slack, which at the moment is the de facto communications platform for the workspace. Of course it would be hard to make the switch since it would involve a huge effort by everyone, but Microsoft is certainly making it compelling.

The company has announced that Microsoft Teams users can add guests, which means that if the person you’re communicating with doesn’t have an account, adding them as a guest will be a quick and easy temporary fix for that. “We’re starting to roll out the ability to add anyone as a guest in Microsoft Teams. This means that anyone with a business or consumer email account, such as Outlook.com, Gmail.com or others, can participate as a guest in Teams with full access to team chats, meetings and files.”

Microsoft adds, “All guests in Teams are covered by the same compliance and auditing protection as the rest of Office 365, and can be managed securely within Azure AD.” This should make it easier for users to adopt the app, plus guests who have tried it out might consider hopping on board the Microsoft Teams bandwagon as well. That being said, there have been recent reports that Microsoft could be considering a free version of Microsoft Teams which should no doubt aid in boosting adoption of the platform.

Nomad Introduces The Wireless Travel Stand For The iPhone 8, iPhone X

At this point in time it’s anyone’s guess as to when the AirPower wireless charging mat by Apple will be released, although we have heard that a launch in March is possible. However if you’re looking for a wireless charger, there are many out there right now, but accessory maker Nomad has something new in store.

The company has recently taken the wraps off its Wireless Travel Stand charger. According to Nomad, the device will play nicely with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, basically it will support Apple’s iPhones that have wireless charging. However given that the wireless charging iPhones rely on Qi, we suppose you could use other Qi-compatible handsets with this charger as well, although whether or not it’ll fit nicely on the stand is another story.

That being said, the Wireless Travel Stand is pretty stylish as far as wireless chargers are concerned. It features a rubber base to keep it sturdy and from moving around too much, it is also made out of aluminum, and also sports Horween leather for its surface to prevent any scratches to your phone, if you are using it without a cover. It is also capable of fast charging with 7.5W of output.

The stand can also be collapsed into a horizontal position if you’d prefer charging your phone that way. Unfortunately the downside to the stand is that it uses a wall plug as opposed to Lightning, USB-C, or micro USB. This means that you’ll need to bring an extra cable when you travel. However if you don’t have an issue with that, you can head on over to Nomad’s website to place your order where it will set you back $60.
