Best Buy will close 250 phone-focused stores in the US

Best Buy To Close Their Dedicated Mobile Phone Stores

Over the years as buying habits have changed, this has affected the way certain businesses are run. For example while it used to be a pretty popular thing, VHS rental stores are a pretty rare sight in this day of digital media. This is why it also doesn’t come as a surprise that dedicated mobile phone stores are starting to close.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal (paywall; via AppleInsider), it seems that Best Buy will be shuttering their satellite stores that are dedicated to mobile phone sales. This is because it seems that more customers are going to carrier stores and also stores like Apple to buy their phones directly.

Given that sometimes carrier stores have the same phones on display as mobile stores like Best Buy, there is no need to go to Best Buy if they can go to the carrier straight. It has also been suggested that perhaps sluggish smartphone sales could have contributed to Best Buy’s decision.

In an internal letter sent to employees, Best Buy chief executive Hubert Joly wrote, “We began to open them more than a decade ago, before the iPhone was even launched. Fast forward to 2018 and the mobile-phone business has matured, margins have compressed and the cost of operations in our Mobile stand-alone stores is higher than in our Big Box stores.” The closure of these stores are expected to close this coming May.

Facebook Launches Campaign To Promote Women In Gaming

While there are female gamers out there, for the most part the gaming scene is mostly still seen as something of a boy’s club. However this is something that many are hoping to change, such as Twitch who recently launched a grant to help female streamers get off the ground, attend more events, and upgrade their equipment.

Now it looks like Facebook is trying to do the same as well, and have recently launched a campaign called “Women in Gaming” that wants to promote the women already in the gaming scene. However it won’t be just about female gamers, but also those who work behind the scenes at developer studios. It also looks at females who are working in high-powered positions in gaming companies, such as Kati Levoranta who is the CEO of Rovio, the company behind the insanely popular Angry Birds franchise.

The campaign was announced by Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg who says, “Gaming is one of the best examples of people connecting around their interests, and women have a really important part to play in this industry.” She also cites how many women actually make up the gamer population, along with how there are some very strong female lead characters in video games today.

If you’re interested in learning more about “Women in Gaming”, you can head on over to Facebook’s website for the details.

New Far Cry 5 Live-Action Trailer Released

If you’re looking forward to Ubisoft’s upcoming Far Cry 5, you might be interested to learn that Ubisoft has since published a live-action trailer for the upcoming game. The trailer will show more of Father Joseph who will be the game’s main antagonist. It also shows a bit of how he became that way.

According to the video’s description, “Behind every villain is an unremarkable person with a remarkable story. This is about Joseph Seed’s journey before he became the Father, before Pastor Jerome was forced to forfeit his status as shepherd of the County’s souls.” The trailer is rather disturbing and it certainly does a pretty good job of setting the tone of the game, so if Far Cry 5 is a title you’ve been looking forward to, then you’ll want to check it out.

Far Cry 5 will be released on the 27th of March, 2018 and will be the latest installment in the Far Cry franchise. We’ve seen a gameplay trailer that was released last year which could be worth checking out if you want to see what the game looks like. Ubisoft had also previously stated that the story in Far Cry 5 will be more dynamic compared to previous titles, so if static storytelling was something you didn’t particularly enjoy in previous releases, hopefully Far Cry 5 will be able to address that.

Hearthstone Will Finally Be Getting A Tournament Mode

Despite the fact that Hearthstone is one of the more popular competitive video games out there right now, for some reason Blizzard has never really bothered to create a proper tournament mode. Instead players have had to resort to using the in-game player challenge system, which as Kotaku points out has resulted in more than one technical flub.

However the good news is that Blizzard has since announced that Hearthstone will be getting an in-game tournament mode. According to Blizzard, “You’ll be able to create a custom tournament and invite your friends–all from within the Hearthstone game client. To start, the feature will include matchmaking and checking decks, but we’ll continue to add new features and functionality over time.”

However this feature isn’t expected to arrive for a while as a beta of the feature is only expected to arrive mid-year. This means that there will be a period of beta testing, which also means that when the feature is eventually rolled out, it might be much later in the year. Blizzard notes that they will be exploring this feature through the release and feedback, so what you see might not necessarily be in the final release.

In addition to a new tournament mode, Blizzard had also previously announced that Hearthstone will be phasing out certain card sets from Standard play. It was also suggested that a new expansion will be arriving in the next couple of months.
