Latest macOS High Sierra Update Includes Support For External GPUs

The problem with most Mac computers is that they are not really upgradeable. Apple gives users some options to choose from when configuring their computer, but this is mostly in the RAM and storage department, not so much in the GPU department which usually offers one or two choices at most.

Unfortunately this means that users who demand much more from their computers will have to fork out for the more expensive Macs, like the Mac Pro or the iMac Pro. However the good news is that you might no longer have to pay so much for a high-end Mac because in the latest macOS High Sierra update, it looks like Apple will be introducing support for external GPUs.

What this means is that if you have an old-ish Mac computer that you still plan on using, you will be able to attach an external GPU to it that might be more powerful which in turn sort of extends the life of your computer. Granted it will reduce its portability and mobility if you’re using a laptop, but if you work from home then it shouldn’t pose much of a problem.

This also means that developers who are looking to develop VR applications on their Mac computers now have an option to beef up their current setup. This makes sense financially as a new GPU would cost less compared to buying a brand new Apple computer.

Job Listings Hint At Apple’s Plans To Improve Siri

Compared to Google Assistant or even Amazon’s Alexa, Siri, despite it being around longer, doesn’t feel quite as robust or as responsive despite Apple’s work over the years. In fact a report from earlier this month even suggested that Apple could be looking to give Siri a dramatic makeover to make it more competitive.

Whether or not that is true remains to be seen, but it is clear that Apple is looking to improve on the digital assistant. This is evidenced in a recent report in which based on job listings, Apple is looking to hire as many as 142 people for Siri-related work. Apparently this is twice as many compared to the previous year, suggesting that the rumors of Siri getting an overhaul could be true to a certain extent.

This shouldn’t be too surprising either because with the launch of the HomePod, and as much as Apple would like to claim that the speakers are more focused on sound quality, they are usually compared with the Amazon Echo and Google Home, both of which have more “smarts” when it comes to connected objects.

Exactly what these new hirings mean remains to be seen because in the previous report, it was suggested that the current situation at Apple is where the company has no clear vision of what Siri should be. Unless Apple has already defined a vision, hiring more people won’t necessarily make it better, but we suppose we’ll just have to wait and find out.
