Facebook Sued Over Collection Of Call, Text History Logs

Facebook’s privacy scandal doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere anytime soon. If anything it looks like it’s about to get started, but if that wasn’t bad enough, you might recall that Facebook was also recently discovered to have been collecting the call and text message history logs of Android users.

Now according to a report from Reuters, several Facebook users have since decided to file a lawsuit against the company, suing them for allegedly violating their privacy. However we should note that unlike the Cambridge Analytica scandal, this issue might actually be a bit more clear cut because before accessing such data, Facebook had requested the permission of Android users, to which many obviously agreed to, or at least unknowingly agreed to.

However this explanation wasn’t good enough to these users who are now suing the company over alleged privacy violations. They are seeking to turn this into a class-action lawsuit, but whether or not that will happen remains to be seen as a judge will need to see if there are enough people affected by this issue before it can be filed as a class-action lawsuit.

That being said for those who are only finding out about this, you will be able to remove your contacts from Facebook if you’re uncomfortable with them having that information. More details about the removal can be found on Facebook’s support page. In the meantime Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to testify before Congress over the data scandal.

Facebook Reportedly Delays Launch Of Their Smart Speakers

We’re sure that there are some users with concerns about devices like the Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Apple HomePod, devices that are sitting there “listening” and waiting for users to give the command. These companies have stressed in the past that they are not eavesdropping on users, but despite that there are probably some a little worried nonetheless.

Unfortunately for Facebook, now might not be the best time to launch their own set of smart speakers. In a report from Bloomberg, it seems that the social networking giant has apparently delayed the launch of their speakers which was originally set for an unveiling in May at the company’s F8 event.

We have been hearing rumors that Facebook is working on smart speaker devices that will be similar to what’s being offered in the market, although given the recent privacy scandal that Facebook has found themselves embroiled in, like we said, it is probably not the best time to be launching speakers that have “always listening” features.

We’re not sure when Facebook might choose to launch these speakers, although they might probably want to wait for the fuss to die down first before doing so. However if the pundits are right, this recent scandal could be bigger than Facebook anticipated and might not be going away anytime soon.

Alphabet X Looking To Use AI In Food Production

As the population of the world grows, so does our consumption of food. This means that some farming or food production techniques that were used before might no longer be viable or as efficient, at least not efficient enough to meet today’s demand. However it looks like Google’s parent company Alphabet is looking into that problem.

The company’s secretive “moonshot” X lab has recently embarked in an exploration on how to improve food production, and one of the ways that they are looking at is the use of artificial intelligence. At the moment it appears that the team has yet to come up with any particular approach, but according to Astro Teller, the head of X, they have some potential ideas worth exploring.

One of which is using AI to help make decisions on when it might be best to harvest crops, or where it might be the most ideal to apply irrigation. Another would be using AI to help better predict things like the weather, pests, and other factors that can affect production. This is actually a very important study because according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, an estimated 20-40% of global crop yields are lost to pests and diseases.

This means that the amount that actually makes it to consumers is less than what it could be. Alphabet’s X lab is not alone in their study but hopefully with their resources, they’ll be able to come up with some viable solutions.

Google Acquires GIF Platform Tenor

If you love using GIFs, there are several GIF platforms available on the web, such as Giphy and Tenor, in which the latter’s case has been acquired by Google. The announcement was made on Google’s blog in which Google shares some ideas on how they plan to leverage their latest acquisition.

According to Google, “Most people now use Google Images to find more information about a topic, and to help them communicate and express themselves—case in point, we see millions of searches for GIFs every day.” They add, “With their deep library of content, Tenor surfaces the right GIFs in the moment so you can find the one that matches your mood. Tenor will help us do this more effectively in Google Images as well as other products that use GIFs, like Gboard.”

Google’s announcement also confirms that Tenor will continue to operate as a separate brand, much like how other Google acquisitions have continued to operate under their own brand, such as Waze. We’re not sure if Google has bigger plans for Tenor in the future, like maybe better integrating GIF support into their products and services like Android, Gmail, or G Suite, but for now it looks like it will business as usual.

This Spiderbot Can Transform Itself Into A Rolling Wheel That Can Chase You

It seems that in the future not only might we have to be worried about robots that can outthink us, but also robots that can outrun us. The folks at Festo have recently taken the wraps off their latest robotic creation which is a spider-like robot that can fold up and transform into a rolling wheel that can chase after us.

Dubbed the BionicWheelBot, this is a robot that is inspired by nature and modeled after the flic-flac spider that has been known to perform cartwheels in order to quickly escape from a predator. With it being able to transform, the BionicWheelBot will be ideal when it comes to navigating a variety of terrain, where in some instances it can use its pincer-like legs to scale over rough terrains, and transform into a wheel when the terrain is smoother and it needs to cover more distance faster.

This is not the first time that we’ve seen robots modeled after animals or insects in real-life. For example some of Boston Dynamic’s robots have been modeled after the cheetah, some have been modeled after cats, while some of the more scary ones have actually been modeled after humans where they are realistic enough to star in their own movies.
