It has been a while since Sony launched new tablets. The company has stuck to smartphones since 2015 which was when it last released tablets but that might be changing this year. A new report suggests that Sony is going to release the Xperia XZ2 tablet in the coming months in two different sizes. The possibility has been highlighted by Sony’s own camera app which contains references to what might be the upcoming tablets.
The report claims that Sony is going to launch new tablets this year as part of its Xperia XZ2 lineup. A teardown of Sony’s camera app has revealed references to the upcoming tablets, the strings specifically mention “Tablet_8inch” and “Tablet_10inch.”
If the reference in the code is taken at face value, then it suggests that Sony will launch at least two new tablets this year with 8 inch and 10 inch displays. The tablets will obviously be powered by Android as Sony doesn’t use any other operating system for its mobile devices.
No word as yet about the specifications of these new tablets but one can hold out hold for flagship-level specifications since that’s what the company went with when it launched its last slate, the Xperia Z4 Tablet, back in 2015.
Sony is yet to confirm, though, that it has a couple of new tablets in the pipeline that it intends to release this year. So it remains to be seen if and when these tablets will be launched.

Facebook has been ensnared in a data privacy scandal after it was revealed that Cambridge Analytica had improperly harvested data on the social network’s users. While Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg have since apologized and promised to do more in order to prevent something like this from happening again, the legal and regulatory problems are only just starting. Amid reports that the FTC might step in, it has now confirmed that it’s investigating the matter.
The agency sent out a statement today confirming that it has opened an investigation into Facebook’s data privacy scandal.
“The FTC takes very seriously recent press reports raising substantial concerns about the privacy practices of Facebook,” it said, adding that it’s now confirming an “open non-public investigation into these practices.” The statement sent Facebook shares down by as much as 5 percent immediately after it hit the news wires.
The scandal came to light about a week ago when it was first reported that Cambridge Analytica had collected Facebook profile information on more than 50 million users through a researcher that developed an app which harvested this data.
Facebook has also taken flak from other quarters as well. The United States Congress is asking questions and so is the United Kingdom’s Parliament. Users aside, even the company’s shareholders have questions about the entire episode.
All eyes will now be on the FTC to see what it concludes after conducting its investigation into the matter.

When you’re on a plane you’d probably want your pilot to do little else than just fly the plane. You wouldn’t really feel comfortable if they diverted their attention from that crucial task for a moment to do something else, such as making videos to post on Snapchat. That’s precisely what two EasyJet pilots did on a recent flight and they have seen been suspended by the airline.
Granted that flying an airplane isn’t as taxing as it once was, with sophisticated onboard computers and the autopilot providing a helping hand. However, there’s a reason why we don’t have planes that takeoff, fly, and land on their own.
The industry still feels the need to have a pilot and a co-pilot behind the controls at all times despite all of these advancements which is probably why passengers might not appreciate finding out that the people in charge of the plane are actually busy with Snapchat.
EasyJet captain Michel Castellucci posted videos on Snapchat that showed him and his colleague having fun with the app’s various filters. There was even a video in which the captain included a poll to see if his followers wanted more. The videos were reportedly filmed at 30,000 ft on a flight from Paris to Madrid.
Castellucci is said to have an active social media presence prior to reports about the videos he made in the cockpit while flying surfaced. His social media accounts have now been deleted. A spokeswoman for the airline has confirmed that the pilots have been suspended pending a disciplinary investigation. She also added that the videos were filmed when the aircraft wasn’t performing any maneuver and that passenger safety was not compromised at any point.

As a trade war looms between the two superpowers, China has put forward a proposal to reduce the surplus by offering to purchase more semiconductors from the United States. Multiple reports have been published today suggesting that China has quietly put forward a proposal to the United States in the ongoing trade negotiations to purchase more semiconductor chips from American manufacturers.
China will reportedly increase the percentage of computer chips that it purchases from the United States at the cost of purchases from South Korea and Taiwan, provided that China and the United States can come to an agreement which moves their trade relationship forward.
What China has essentially proposed is that it would reduce the number of chips it buys from South Korean and Taiwanese companies so that it can give those orders to American companies. The step would be aimed at reducing the trade deficit between China and the United States which hit an all-time high last year of $375 billion.
The proposal isn’t without merit when you consider the fact that China is the world’s largest consumer of semiconductor chips. Diverting another chunk of its chip sourcing to the United States could have a major impact on the deficit and the industry at large.
The U.S. hasn’t responded to this proposal as yet, at least not publicly, so it might be a while before the public comes to know about whether or not this proposal helped in calming the tensions between the two countries.

Facebook announced back in January this year that it would start displaying more local news in the News Feed. This meant that users would likely see more stories from their local newspaper or TV station. The change was limited to the United States initially and Facebook did say at that time that it would introduce it globally as well. The company confirmed today that its local news focus is now being expanded to markets across the globe.
“Local news helps us understand the issues that matter in our communities and affect our lives,” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg when the company first announced this change. It did that in a bid to promote less content from global publishers in response to mounting criticism that the platform was becoming too political.
Facebook has confirmed today that it’s now expanding its focus on local news to all countries and languages. Users across the globe will now see more news on Facebook from local sources which cover their current city and other cities that they might care about.
The social network has also promised to continue its work to prioritize high-quality news in News Feed, including news from sources that are widely trusted.
The announcement comes amid troubled times for Facebook which is now under investigation by the FTC for the infamous data privacy scandal that resulted in the profile information of more than 50 million users being harvested through an app.
