Full Sail University Will Use VR To Help Online Students Feel Less Isolated

These days we’re starting to see more traditional education institutions offer online courses for those who want to learn a new subject but don’t have time to go to school in person, live in another country, or who are looking for a more affordable course than paying for a full diploma or degree.

However the disadvantages to online courses is that students are generally isolated, meaning that they won’t have the same classroom experience compared to if they attended class in person. However Full Sail University wants to change that and have teamed up with Doghead Simulations where they will use virtual reality (VR) to help online students feel less isolated.

As you can tell from the video above, this lets online students be in a virtual classroom with other students that are represented with their own avatars. In a way it’s almost like being in an MMORPG except for education. Of course this will require students to own a VR device in order to participate.

According to Isis Jones, CIO and Executive Director of Education at Full Sail University, “We are very excited about the next level of engagement that rumii will bring to our education. Beyond facilitating collaboration, VR education allows for concentrated monotasking learning, which we believe will enhance the retention of information.” Jones adds, “In today’s world where technology and screen time can be distracting, VR allows you to be in the moment and engaged with the subject at hand.”

LG G7 ThinQ Rumored To Feature Dedicated Google Assistant Button

One of the features of Samsung’s more recent phones is that they come with a dedicated hardware button that lets users launch Bixby at the press of a button. Now it looks like LG could be borrowing the feature for its upcoming LG G7 ThinQ which is expected to be the company’s next flagship.

In a report from CNET, the LG G7 ThinQ is reported to sport a physical button that when pressed, will launch Google Assistant. While there’s no way of knowing if this report is true, in a way it makes sense. This is because LG had previously launched ThinQ devices powered by Google Assistant, so with the LG G7 receiving the ThinQ branding, we’re not surprised that Google Assistant will be integrated into the handset somehow.

Unfortunately just like Samsung’s Bixby button, it seems that LG’s Google Assistant button cannot be remapped either. This means that users who want to use the button for something else, like launching another app, this will not be possible, at least not officially. Perhaps a custom ROM could change that but that’s what we are hearing for now.

LG has declined to comment on the report but we expect that with all the leaks and teasers we’ve been seeing, it probably won’t be too long until we get all the official details.

WebKit Code Hints At Dark Mode For macOS 10.14

The option to switch between dark and light modes in apps aren’t new, but they are typically offered from app to app which means that should a developer choose not to include it, there’s not much users can do. This is why there are calls for companies to implement it on an OS-wide level.

The good news for Mac users is that they could get their wish because according to a report from 9to5Mac, code within WebKit seems to have hinted that macOS 10.14 could be getting a dark mode of its own. As 9to5Mac points out, dark mode has sort of been introduced in El Capitan but developers will have to opt into using it, which like we said above means that some apps might have it while others don’t.

However with this code, it seems to hint that Apple could be looking for a way to change the appearance of apps running on macOS globally, meaning that users won’t need to be at the mercy of developers for a dark mode which can come in handy in low-light situations where apps with bright/white appearances can be glaring.

This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about Apple introducing a dark mode to its platforms. A couple of years ago it was rumored that iOS could be getting a dark mode but that clearly did not come to fruition.

iPhone SE 2 Might Not Come With A Headphone Jack

According to the latest rumors, it has been suggested that the iPhone SE 2 will not come with a headphone jack. Considering that Apple has been doing away with the headphone jack since the iPhone 7, we suppose this shouldn’t really come as a surprise but this is just a rumor for now so take it with a grain of salt.

That being said, the existence of the iPhone SE 2 is a bit contested right now. Recent regulatory filings have indicated that the phone could be in the works and could even be announced in the next couple of months. However an earlier report by reputed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the iPhone SE 2 might not be in development.

The report claimed that Apple had used up its development resources and that they might not have enough left for the iPhone SE 2. Kuo also published a report earlier this week suggesting that Apple could have a cheaper iPhone in the works priced at $550. Assuming that is true, it would make sense for Apple to offer that phone to its budget-conscious customers over the iPhone SE 2.

Either way we guess we will find out at WWDC 2018 (or possibly earlier) if Apple might have a new iPhone SE 2 to announce, but until then take it with a grain of salt.

AT&T, Verizon Under Investigation Over Alleged eSIM Collusion

In recent times, Apple has started including eSIMs into their products, such as their iPads. What this means is that users who want cellular connectivity on their iPads simply have to activate the SIM with a carrier as opposed to using a physical SIM which can be troublesome, especially if you’re looking to switch carriers.

However according to a report from The New York Times, carriers AT&T and Verizon have been accused of colluding over eSIMs where together with mobile industry standards group, GSMA, they have allegedly worked to block eSIM tech to prevention adoption and progress. The reason? To prevent customers from leaving their services and switching to another carrier, in which eSIM tech makes it easier for them to do so.

It is unclear as to who might have made the complaint to the US Department of Justice, but tweets from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Eric Newcomer have revealed that Apple could have been the one behind it. However as 9to5Mac points out, Google and Microsoft both offer devices that use eSIM tech, suggesting that they might also have a good reason to possibly file a complaint as well.

Verizon has since issued a statement over the investigations, saying that they have been working with the US DoJ on the inquiry because of “a difference of opinion with a couple of phone equipment manufacturers regarding the development of eSIM standards.”

AT&T has also issued a statement that reads, “We are aware of the investigation into GSMA’s process for developing eSIM standards that provide a better experience for consumers. Along with other GSMA members, we have provided information to the government in response to their requests and will continue to work proactively within GSMA, including with those who might disagree with the proposed standards, to move this issue forward.”

Ohio’s Ashland University To Offer ‘Fortnite’ Scholarships

Scholarships to schools are usually given on the merit of the person applying for it, and in the past it used to be based on either how smart the student is based on their grades, or if they were athletic enough where they could represent the school that they are applying for. However these days we are starting to see a different type of scholarship where schools are giving them out to students who perform well in eSports.

In fact it seems that the Ashland University in Ohio have announced that they will be giving out scholarships for students who perform well in Epic Games’ Fortnite Battle Royale. Fortnite has been out for a while now, but the success of the game on mobile has shown that it has huge potential to be the next eSport. Ashland University already has an eSports program and Fortnite will be the latest title that they will be adding to their roster.

According to head coach Josh Buchanan, “Fortnite appeals to both the core and casual gaming audience. We’re excited to provide this platform for gamers who want to showcase their skills in a more competitive space. Fortnite facilitates an environment that allows players to get creative, innovate and show off their mastery of their skills.” There are hopes that eventually collegiate leagues will be able to come together for official Fortnite competitions.
