LG recently announced the creation of a new division with the sole purpose of speeding up Android updates for its users. The Software Upgrade Center is now going to push out its first update for the company’s handsets. LG has confirmed that the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the LG G6 is going to start rolling out next week. The rollout will begin from April 30th to be precise.
Do keep in mind, though, that despite LG’s announcement that the LG G6 is going to get its Oreo update tomorrow, it’s going to take some time before all variants of this handset get Oreo. It’s merely starting the rollout tomorrow and given how Android updates work, it may be a couple of days before all variants of the LG G6 get Oreo.
The company itself mentions in the press release that this update will first be rolled out to the G6 in its home country of South Korea. Other markets will get it after that and those in the United States can expect to wait even longer as carriers take up additional time to push the updates through.
LG does mention in the press release that the artificial intelligence features that it introduced with the V30S ThinQ will be coming to the G6 with this update.

The original Nokia X handsets came out many moons ago but recent reports have suggested that HMD Global could be revising the lineup this year. New evidence has surfaced which suggests that the Nokia X is going to be officially launched on May 16th. The handset is also going to be HMD Global’s first Nokia-branded smartphone with a display notch.
HMD Global has a five-day event in Beijing where it’s showing off its lineup of smartphones and feature phones. It’s also showcasing one device that hasn’t been officially launched yet, the Nokia X.
According to reports out of China, many billboards put up near the event’s location mention the Nokia X even though this device is yet to be announced. Despite the fact that the device is being showcased at the event, the company hasn’t displayed any information about its specifications and has even kept the units locked so it’s impossible for people to find out what the specs are.
However, HMD Global is now sending out invites for an event in China which will take place on May 16th. The invite doesn’t mention the handset by name but offers a pretty good hint what the spotlight will be on come May 16th. That’s finally when we’ll get to know more about what’s under the hood of the Nokia X.

After years of will they, won’t they, T-Mobile and Sprint today officially announced that they’re going to merge. The third and fourth largest mobile carriers in the United States have decided to join forces and compete in this very competitive mobile market. The two companies have officially announced their intention to merge today but the deal is subject to approval from regulators and shareholders.
It has also been confirmed today that the combined entity is going to be called T-Mobile and existing CEO John Legere will get to keep his position. T-Mobile COO Mike Sievert will join the new T-Mobile as president and chief operating officer. Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure will get a seat on the combined entity’s board.
SoftBank, Sprint’s majority owner, is going to have a 27 percent stake in the new T-Mobile whereas T-Mobile’s parent company Deutsche Telekom will get a 42 percent stake in the company. The rest will be with public stakeholders.
Once the deal is closed, the new company will be headquartered in Bellevue, Washington with a second HQ in Overland Park, Kansas. The press release sent out today mentions that the combined company will be able to take advantage of greater economies of scale to provide customers with more value. It also mentions that the new company will be able to light up a nationwide 5G network faster than either company could separately.
It’s still far from a done deal, though, as the deal has to receive approval from the regulators. They didn’t take kindly to the prospect of fewer major carriers in the U.S. when AT&T tried buying T-Mobile in 2011. Whether or not they will show stiff resistance this time around will only be known in due course.

The Galaxy Note 7 proved to be a disaster for the company even though the handset was very well received and it appeared that the Galaxy Note 7 would be a hit for Samsung. Unfortunately, those dreams went up in flames quite literally due to a battery defect that was causing units to catch fire. Samsung ultimately killed the device but later brought it back as the Galaxy Note FE or Fan Edition. That particular variant has now received its Android 8.0 Oreo update.
After dozens of reports of Galaxy Note 7 units burning up in flames, Samsung decided to halt production and recall all units that it had sold. An initial battery recall program failed to work as the issues were more severe than previously contemplated.
Samsung was sitting on thousands of unsold units so it decided to put them to use by launching the Galaxy Note FE several months later. The handset is more or less the same as the Galaxy Note 7 as they have the same design and internals with the battery being the obvious exception. It has a smaller 3,200mAh battery.
Those who picked up this device will now be delighted to know that Samsung is rolling out the Android 8.0 Oreo firmware update for the Galaxy Note FE. The update is rolling out over-the-air and should go live for users in all markets in the not too distant future.

While there have been many reports suggesting that Apple is focusing on augmented reality more instead of virtual reality, it appears that the company is developing a new headset that will enable it to compete in the VR space as well against the likes of Google and Facebook. Apple is said to be working on a bonkers “16K” VR headset that it’s aiming to launch in 2020.
CNET reports that Apple is going to release a new headset in 2020 which will combine augmented and virtual reality technologies. The project is internally referred to as the T288 and the scribe hears from sources that this headset is going to feature an 8K display for each eye and that it will connect to a dedicated “box” wirelessly.
The box is reportedly going to be powered by a custom Apple processor “more powerful than anything currently available.” This box will essentially be the brain for the AR and VR headset. The box is said to resemble a PC tower in its current state even though it won’t actually be a Mac computer.
The report does mention that the development is still in early stages so it’s quite possible that Apple might decide to scrap the project if it doesn’t make sense down the line. Apple hasn’t commented on the report as yet so there’s no official word as yet from the company about a VR/AR headset just yet.
