U.S. regulators are expected to grill the companies on how they will price their combined wireless offerings.
After years of on-again, off-again talks, it’s official: T-Mobile and Sprint have announced plans to merge. The deal values Sprint at $59 billion (the combined company would be worth $146 billion) and will give T-Mobile the reins, with the carrier’s…
Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin Cautions Against Artificial Intelligence Threats
Posted in: Today's Chili
Add Google co-founder Sergey Brin to the list of people who don’t think that there are no concerns related to artificial intelligence that should be addressed in due course. While he’s not in the same league as people who fear that the technology might become self-aware some day and end mankind as we know it, he does caution about the various threats that artificial intelligence presents in the current “technology renaissance,” threats such as job destruction.
Brin writes in the company’s annual Founders’ Letter that the work being done now on AI is the “most significant development in computing in my lifetime,” but adds that “such powerful tools also bring with them new questions and responsibilities.”
Google already uses artificial intelligence in many of its products and services to make them better. It’s the technology that enables its self-driving cars to recognize objects, it’s what powers its language translation engine, filters questionable content from appearing in search results, and more.
“From the fears of sci-fi style sentience to the more near-term questions such as validating the performance of self-driving cars,” Brin writes that the company is seriously thinking about these issues and others such as how the technology will affect jobs, what are the challenges in making unbiased and transparent algorithms. Another concern is to prevent such algorithms from being used to manipulate people.
Just how soon the company will have answers to these questions remains to be seen, though.

It’s not always easy to interact with a smartwatch but they have really small displays. They’re limited in terms of size because there’s only a certain level to which you can expand a watch and if you go beyond that you’re no longer in the wearables category. LumiWatch aims to provide a different solution by using technology which effectively makes your arm or hand the touchscreen for input.
Carnegie Mellon University researchers have developed the LumiWatch smartwatch as a concept to showcase that it’s possible to make your arm or hand into a touchscreen. The LumiWatch has a self-contained 15 lumen projection module and touch sensor which puts a touchscreen interface on the user’s body. They can then just tap and swipe on their skin to unlock the device and control apps.
The prototype is powered by a 1.2 GHz quadcore Qualcomm processor with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of memory. It also has a 740 mAh battery and runs Android 5.1 with support for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It measures 50x41x17mm and has all of the components essential for it to function contained within its body.
It’s a novel concept but it’s far from being ready for public release. This technology might make its way to wearable devices of the future but don’t expect to pick up an iteration of this smartwatch at any point in the near future.

If a new report is to be believed, LG is soon going to launch a new wearable device. The company has reportedly developed a hybrid smartwatch called the LG Watch Timepiece which it’s going to announce as early as next week. No images of the device have been leaked online, though, so it’s unclear right now what it looks like.
The report claims that the LG Watch Timepiece will have a 1.2 inch circular LCD panel with analog watch hands on top. This implementation would allow for some new use cases which users will be able to take advantage of.
For instance, the watch face could be used as a compass with the analog watch hands moving over the LCD display to replicate a compass. It may also function the same way for a barometer.
However, one would expect that this implementation would make it difficult to use conventional Wear OS apps since the analog hands would obstruct the view. So even if this is being done to set the LG Watch Timepiece apart from the competition, it remains to be seen if it wins over any fans because of its unorthodox design.
The LG Watch Timepiece will reportedly be IP68 certified for water and dust resistance as well as be compatible with changeable watch bands. It will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 2100 processor with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. No word as yet on how much it’s going to cost.

If you’ve never played with Nanoblocks, you really should. These nifty little building blocks are much smaller than LEGO bricks, which means they can be used to make more precise shapes. It’s like the difference between an SD screen and an HD screen, where more pixels = greater detail. Nanoblocks makes all kinds of neat sets, including architecture, animals, airplanes, cars, and more. They even make a Nanoblock skeleton. While I was looking around for some kits to buy, I came across this set, which includes a bunch of Pokémon.
The limited-edition set includes 11 different Pokémon characters, who each look awesome as tiny block-built characters. Among the voxelated menagerie are figures of Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Eevee, Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise, and more.
Apparently, these sets were released back in 2013 to celebrate the release of Pokémon X and Y, and are very hard to come by these days. But if you’ve got about $269 burning a hole in your pocket, you can grab this complete set from Amazon right now, though if you happen to live in Japan, you can score one for about half that price.
