Google Says Inbox With iPhone X Support Will Be Coming Soon

Just like how developers took some time to eventually start supporting the larger displays and higher resolutions of Apple’s recent iPhones, it seems that there are still some apps that have yet to be updated with support for the iPhone X’s full screen display, such as Google’s Inbox email app.

What’s interesting is that despite Inbox sort of being similar to Gmail save for a different UI, we have to wonder how come Google is taking so long especially when back in December 2017 Gmail itself was updated for the iPhone X. The good news is that Inbox users might not have to wait much longer, according to a tweet by The Wall Street Journal’s David Pierce.

According to Pierce, he says that Google has told him that the update for Inbox for the iPhone X will be coming soon. Apparently Google had something “crazy” planned but the launch of the iPhone X broke it, which is the reason why they had to spend more time trying to fix it and launch it. We’re not sure how many Gmail users are actually using Inbox, but given that Google isn’t rushing the update out sure sounds like Gmail might be a bigger priority. No word on when the update will be released, but we guess we’ll just have to wait for it.

Volvo Aiming For Half Their Sales To Be Electric By 2025

At the rate things are going, carmakers are definitely starting to look towards a future where cars will no longer have to rely on fossil fuels to be powered, and will instead rely on clean energy like electricity (hydrogen-powered cars are also a possibility). However when will such a future arrive where electric cars might overtake regular cars?

At least for Volvo, the company is aiming for 2025. According to the company, it seems that they are hoping that by 2025, at least half of their sales will be that of electric cars. This was revealed by the company’s CEO Håkan Samuelsson at the Beijing Auto Show where he was quoted as saying, “Last year we made a commitment to electrification in preparation for an era beyond the internal combustion engine. Today we reinforce and expand that commitment in the world’s leading market for electrified cars.”

Prior to this, in 2017 Volvo announced a goal where they stated that in 2019, all models that they will be unveiling will feature an electric motor. While some of these cars might be hybrids, they will all feature an electric motor at least. However this latest commitment seems to be taking it to the next level where they hope that half of their car sales will be of the full electric variety.

Will they be able to achieve that goal? We’ll have to wait and see, but Volvo is definitely not alone in this and we expect that in the future more customers will start adopting similar green modes of transportation.

Amazon’s Alexa Had A Flaw Which Allowed Others To Eavesdrop

There are some concerns that users have with smart speakers and that is they typically come with an always-listening feature. This is usually done so that the speaker can react when the trigger phrase is spoken, but there are some who are worried that as a result of this feature, companies are listening in all the time and invading their privacy.

All companies reassure users that they are not, but unfortunately in Amazon’s case, that reality was almost proven true. According to researchers from security firm Checkmarx (via CNET), it seems that they have discovered a flaw in Alexa that allowed Echo devices to be listening all the time and also allow others to eavesdrop.

The good news is that Checkmarx reached out to Amazon before disclosing the flaw publicly, and that Amazon has since fixed the issue. It is unclear as to whether or not hackers might have exploited the flaw before it was fixed, but so far we haven’t heard anything. In a statement made by Amazon, “Customer trust is important to us and we take security and privacy seriously. We have put mitigations in place for detecting this type of skill behavior and reject or suppress those skills when we do.”

YouTube Introduces More Parental Controls For YouTube Kids

YouTube Kids was designed as a safe haven of sorts for kids, where the videos available on the platform were supposed to be filtered and reviewed to make sure that they are safe for children. However recent times have proven that this isn’t the case as disturbing content has made it past YouTube’s filters and algorithms.

Now YouTube has made several changes to combat this, such as relying more on human curation and review versus algorithms, and for parents who aren’t quite convinced, YouTube’s not quite done yet. The company has recently announced that they will be introducing more parental controls to YouTube Kids where it will give parents more control over the content that their kids can and cannot view.

According to YouTube, “Parents know better than anyone what they want their children to watch. For those parents who want even more control over the videos and channels in the YouTube Kids app, we’re rolling out a feature later this year that will allow parents to specifically handpick every video and channel available to their child in the app.”

In addition to that, there will be a launch of “Collections” by YouTube’s trusted partners where these are channels with content that have been expressly reviewed and allowed by YouTube. YouTube has also made changes to the “search-off” feature where turning search off will limit kids to channels verified by the YouTube Kids team, and will not include broader recommendations.

Happy Ed Balls Day!

Nintendo Will Be Launching A Brand New IP For Mobile Devices

When it comes to Nintendo’s mobile gaming efforts, what we’ve seen so far is the company launch games based on existing franchises, like Mario, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, and so on. Even the Miitomo app which might seem like a brand new title is based on the Mii characters used by Nintendo for their avatar system.

However it looks like Nintendo is starting to take mobile gaming more seriously as the company has announced that they will be launching a brand new IP that will be exclusive to mobile. This new title will be Dragalia Lost which is an action RPG that is developed in partnership with Japanese studio Cygames.

It looks like an interesting title and the good news is that it looks like gamers won’t have to wait too long for its release. The planned release is this coming summer in markets such as Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. There is no mention of a release in western markets, so we guess gamers in the west will just have to wait and see.

There is also not much information about the title at the moment but you can check it out for yourself in the trailer above. Pricing was not mentioned but given that Nintendo’s recent titles have been free-to-play with microtransactions, we wouldn’t be surprised if Dragalia Lost would be given the same treatment as well.

MacBook Pros With 32GB RAM Might Only Arrive In 2019

One of the complaints that some users had about Apple’s new MacBook Pros is that they do not support 32GB of RAM. The maximum amount of RAM that users could configure was 16GB, which is more than enough for the average user, but since this is the MacBook “Pro”, there are some professionals who might require more.

Apple had previously stated that 32GB of RAM would have compromised the battery of the laptop and would also require a change of the laptop’s logic board, but unfortunately if you were hoping that this would have been addressed this year, you might be out of luck. Intel’s recent quarterly earnings report has revealed that the company is expected to continue shipping chips using the 14nm process this year, and that high volume production of 10nm chips are only expected in 2019.

What this means is that if Apple were to decide to support 32GB MacBook Pros, it would only happen in 2019 at the earliest. This is because Intel’s 10nm Cannon Lake processors have support for LPDDR4 memory which will allow for support of 32GB of RAM. The new processors are also said to produce low amounts of heat and lower battery usage, which should address the concerns that Apple had previously mentioned.

This should be taken with a grain of salt for now since it is only speculation that Intel’s delay of their 10nm processors would affect the launch of 32GB MacBook Pros. Plus there is also no guarantee that Apple would support 32GB of RAM even if it started using the new 10nm processors, but we’ll still keep our fingers crossed!
