According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, it appears that Huawei is under criminal investigation over the Iran sanctions. The report does not share much details save for the fact that Huawei is under investigation, so it is unclear as to whether or not this could be the same sanctions that ZTE was accused of violating.
For those unfamiliar, several years ago ZTE was accused of violating sanctions against Iran where US technology was not allowed to be sold to the country. ZTE has since accepted responsibility for that, but fast forward to today, ZTE has since been hit with an export ban where they will not be allowed to export US-based technology, such as chipsets from Qualcomm and also the potential of losing their Android license.
Like we said it is unclear if the investigation against Huawei is over the same issue, but if it were we wouldn’t be surprised. A couple of months ago US intelligence agencies had warned against buying tech from Huawei and ZTE over national security concerns. This has resulted in deals made with AT&T and Verizon to fall through where Huawei was supposed to officially launch their products on US carriers this year.
Huawei has since responded to the investigation in a statement that reads, “Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including the applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and EU.”

One of the upsides to hotels using key cards is that they are programmable. This means that in the event a guest loses a key card or if the card is damaged, it is easily replaceable. They are also interchangeable which means that any card can be programmed for any room. The downside? They are hackable.
This is what hackers have recently demonstrated where according to F-Secure’s Tomi Tuominen and Timo Hirvonen, they have discovered a critical flaw in the software of electronic keys produced by VingCard, who is a major provider of hotel locking systems. With this flaw, it allows hackers to create a master key for the entire building within minutes, and all they need is a regular hotel key card which can even be expired.
Speaking to Gizmodo, Tuominen said, “It can be your own room key, a cleaning staff key, even to the garage or workout facility. We can even do it in an elevator if you have your key in your front pocket; we can just clone it from there.” By F-Secure’s estimates of how widely used VingCard’s systems are, it could affect millions of doors as they are available in 166 countries and in over 40,000 buildings.
The good news is that F-Secure has opted to keep their findings a secret so that malicious hackers won’t be able to exploit it. They have also gotten in touch with the company and demonstrated the hack and are working with them to develop a solution that will patch the flaw.

iphone xWith there being some bad blood between Apple and Qualcomm, it did not come as a surprise to learn that Apple might be looking to source certain components from other companies. After all that’s one of the reasons why Apple turned to TSMC for their chipset production instead of Samsung, and why Apple was also rumored to be looking at LG for OLEDs.
Unfortunately it seems that Apple will not be able to ditch Qualcomm entirely, at least not anytime soon. According to report from Fast Company, it has been reported that Apple is expected to continue sourcing from Qualcomm for 2018’s iPhones. The report claims that Apple will get 70% of the modem chips from Intel, which means that the remaining 30% will come from Qualcomm.
The reason Intel isn’t getting the full 100% is because the company will be fabricating its own modem chips using the 14nm process this year (prior to that Intel used TSMC to manufacture their chips), and apparently Apple wants to see how well Intel can fulfill this year’s orders before working with them exclusively. However production isn’t going so great right now as Fast Company’s sources claim that Intel’s yield rates aren’t what the company had expected and that only half of what has been made is kept.
However Intel believes they’ll be able to sort out the issue before kicking things into high gear come June/July later this year. If all goes according to plan, it is said that Intel could receive 100% of the orders next year, which hopefully will yield modems with 5G capabilities.
