LG G7 Display Tops 1000 NIT Brightness

It’s been confirmed that LG’s upcoming LG G7 will feature a 6.1” 3120×1440 “FullVision” IPS LCD display that can be 1000-NIT bright. LG also says that it does so while consuming 30% less power than the LG G6 IPS LCD display*

NIT is a standard brightness metric that gets its name from the Latin word “nitere” (to shine) and was invented a long time ago, but still in use today (in an updated form). 1 NIT is the light emitted by one (19th century) whale oil candle. Put 1000 of those candles within one square meter, and you have 1000 NIT brightness.

1000 NIT is impressive, and to give you an idea, most laptops displays are 200-300 NITs bright, and smartphones often go as high as 600-800 for the very best among them.

The main benefit of having such an awesome brightness peak capacity is to have excellent screen readability, even in direct sunlight. This is most obvious when you try to read text on white background, but higher brightness helps in general when the surroundings are very bright.

In addition to the brightness milestone, the LG G7 display will feature a new 19.5:9 aspect ratio. This translates into a 50% smaller bottom bezel when compared to the LG G6. Color rendering has not been left out, despite the emphasis on brightness: the new display can cover 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, which is more than a whole lot of screens on the market.

To go even further, LG has added especially tuned modes for Eco(nomy), Cinema, Sports, Game and a fully customizable Expert mode. By default, the screen colors will be an adaptive Auto mode. Each presets can also be tuned after they have been selected, just in case you’re that picky.

*Power-efficiency measured at ~500 NIT since the G6’s display can’t go higher.

WhatsApp Will Soon Let Users Export Their Account Information

In the wake of Facebook’s data privacy scandal, it is not surprising that the scrutiny has also extended to other Facebook products and services, such as WhatsApp. The good news is that if you were wondering about what kind of data WhatsApp collects on you, the company has recently announced (via TechCrunch) a data download tool.

This follows Instagram’s own data download tool which also recently rolled out to users which allows them to download their photos, videos, and profile information. According to WhatsApp, “In the coming weeks, you will be able to download and see the limited data that we collect. This feature will be rolling out to all users around the world on the newest version of the app.”

On the WhatsApp FAQ page, “The Request Account Info feature allows you to request and export a report of your WhatsApp account information and settings. Examples of this information include your profile photo and group names.” The company also claims that a report will take about 3 days to generate, “Your report will be available approximately 3 days after the date requested. You can refer to the Ready by date when waiting for your report.”

Note that unlike Instagram’s data download tool, WhatsApp’s tool is more about showing users what information the company has on them. Messages cannot be downloaded, although if you’re more interested in backing up data, for the most part WhatsApp already backs up your message data to the cloud.

Snapchat Is Testing Out A Redesigned Stories Interface

Last year the folks at Snapchat rolled out a controversial new design. This came on the heels of criticism that suggested that Snapchat had a confusing UI, although ironically enough the ones who ended up complaining about the new design were Snapchat’s current users. The company had previously defended the new design, but now it seems that concessions could be made.

According to a report from Recode, it appears that Snapchat could be testing out a redesign of its Stories interface. It’s not a drastic overhaul of the current design, not by any means, and according to a Snap spokesperson who confirmed the change, this is only a test which means that it may or may not become a permanent change for all users.

So what kind of changes are we talking about? From what we can tell from the redesign, it has basically listing user-created Stories to the Discover page where they will exist alongside posts from brands, celebrities, publishers, and so on. This is similar to how it used to be laid out before the controversial redesign.

Snap did not acknowledge this but in a statement simply said, “We are always listening to our community and will continue to test updates that we hope will give Snapchatters the best possible experience on our platform.”
