Inventor Creates Working Doctor Octopus Exoskeleton

There are probably many out there who after seeing Doctor Octopus or Spider-Man’s latest suit in Avengers: Infinity War, wouldn’t mind two extra pairs of hands to help them do things. In the case of a 10-year old boy, it seems that his wish came true as he is the recipient of a working Doctor Octopus-like exoskeleton.

Featured in CNET’s What The Future episode, this exoskeleton was created by inventor Erik Finman (not to be confused with the bitcoin investor) and features four working arms that have been 3D printed. Finman created this exoskeleton for the boy, who is a family friend and who has hypermobility issues. The boy said that some of his problems could be solved if he had such a suit, which is what Finman created for him.

We’re not sure 100% sure what the suit is capable of, but the arms move and are controlled by buttons in his palm and it looks pretty damn cool. It also weighs about 12 pounds which means that it isn’t too heavy for a 10-year old to be lugging around. Finman says that a larger adult-sized version of the suit could be easily made, one that could be strong enough to lift a car.

He also suggests that cameras could be installed into the arms, which when combined with Google Vision will help the arms identify objects and reach them on their own.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle: Donkey Kong Adventure DLC Announced

Last year was an interesting year for Nintendo where together with Ubisoft, they launched a game called Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. This featured characters from Nintendo’s Mario franchise and Ubisoft’s Rabbids, which like we said was an interesting and successful combination.

The game went on to become the best-selling third-party title. Now it looks like that partnership will be taken one step further as the Donkey Kong Adventure DLC has been announced and a new gameplay trailer has been released. As the name suggests, the DLC will feature characters from Donkey Kong, as well as a new hero in the form of Rabbid Cranky.

According to Nintendo’s description, “Embark in an epic battle against a vengeful Rabbid Kong who uses his new powers to take over a mysterious island. Donkey Kong, Rabbid Peach, and a moody new Rabbid hero, Rabbid Cranky, will team up on a journey across four brand-new environments. Discover a world full of reinvented tactical gameplay, new enemies, and secrets to uncover.”

The Donkey Kong Adventure will be part of the season pass for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, so if you’ve purchased it you should be able to get your hands on it when it is released this spring. In the meantime you can check out the gameplay trailer above to get an idea of what you might be able to expect.

Sony’s PlayStation Chief Hints At Handheld Console Revival

The fate of Sony’s PS Vita has been unknown for a while now. In 2015 Sony stated that they had no plans for a successor to the console and with the recent confirmation that physical production of cartridges for the console would be ending (save for Japan), it seemed like Sony was doing everything except to officially announce that they would be killing the PS Vita off.

However it seems that might not necessarily be the case, according to a report from Bloomberg. In the report, it mentions how Sony’s new PlayStation chief John Kodera is more optimistic about the future of handheld consoles versus his predecessor. Kodera took over the position from Andrew House back in October 2017 and during a recent roundtable interview conducted in Tokyo, Japan, Kodera hinted that the PS Vita could be revived.

He was quoted as saying, “In my opinion, rather than separating portable gaming from consoles, it’s necessary to continue thinking of it (portable gaming) as one method to deliver more gaming experiences and exploring what our customers want from portable. We want to think about many options.”

Kodera doesn’t confirm if the PS Vita will be revived or if there will be a new incarnation of the console, but like we said he does seem to be more optimistic about handhelds. It is possible that the success of the Nintendo Switch has shown Sony the potential of handhelds, but only time will tell if Sony will actually do something about it.

Apple To Work With Volkswagen On Self-Driving Cars

By now Apple’s interest in self-driving cars is pretty well-known, although exactly what Apple plans to do with the technology remains to be seen. Could it be that Apple wants to make their own self-driving cars? Or could it be that Apple wants to make the technology that powers self-driving cars?

Unfortunately those are questions we don’t have the answers for, although in what appears to be an interesting development, it seems that Apple is teaming up with Volkswagen on self-driving cars. This is based on a report from the New York Times in which apparently Volkswagen is one of the only (or few) companies that was willing to work with the Cupertino company.

The report claims that Apple had sought out partnerships with other carmakers, such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz to develop an electric self-driving vehicle, but apparently those deals did not pan out, save for the one with Volkswagen. According to the report, it claims that the deal will see Apple take some of Volkswagen’s new T6 Transporter vans and turn them into self-driving shuttles for employees.

Like we said it is unclear as to what will become to Apple’s self-driving efforts. We’ve seen the company hire many new employees with various backgrounds in automotive technology, and recently the company has expanded its self-driving fleet which now has over 50 vehicles, but the fruits of the company’s labor have yet to be born.

Samsung Wants To Put AI In All Of Its Products By 2020

As we’re starting to see more companies turn to the use of AI and including AI-like features and functionality into products, it’s not surprising to hear that Samsung wants to head down that path as well. This was revealed by the company in a report from The Wall Street Journal (via CNET) where the company’s plans have been confirmed.

Speaking to the publication, Samsung Consumer Electronics CEO Kim Hyun-suk said that he  expects that AI features to be integrated into all of Samsung’s products by 2020. The CEO also revealed that they are building up a huge team of AI engineers which also includes reassignments for some staff members.

What’s interesting is that Kim seems to think that if AI were to be built into all of its products, or at least more products, then the need for smart speakers might be less important. As it stands smart speakers are one of the main ways in which users interact with AI to control other smart objects around our home.

We know that Samsung is making an effort with its Bixby platform, which unfortunately is rarely mentioned in the same sentence as Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri. That being said, Samsung is planning for Bixby 2.0 which will debut in the Galaxy Note 9, so perhaps we’ll see some major improvements made then.

Battlefield V Won’t Feature Paid DLCs Or Premium Passes

One of the popular ways we’re seeing developers and publishers adopt these days to boost revenue beyond the initial sale of the game, is with microtransactions and also season passes/paid DLCs. This is versus how games were released in the past, where updates including new content were expected for free, with the exception of full expansions.

For those who aren’t fans of paid DLCs and season passes, you’ll be pleased to learn that DICE will be doing away with that model for the recently announced Battlefield V. The game will not feature paid DLCs or the sale of premium passes, and instead will encourage gamers to sign up for the Tides of War services.

According to the press release, “Tides of War is DICE’s new approach to live services, where players will set out on an epic journey with their Company in unexpected battles throughout World War 2. There will be no premium pass, all players will have access to the same maps and modes, keeping the community unified as they progress through Battlefield V.”

There will continue to be microtransactions in the game but only for cosmetic purposes, so if you’re not too fussed about that then you should be able to enjoy the game in its entirety with a single purchase moving forwards.
