Apple’s USB-C To Lightning Cable Discounted, Fuels Fast Charger Rumor

According to a recent rumor, it is said that for 2018’s iPhones, Apple could include a USB-C fast charger. Apple had actually included fast charging features in 2017’s iPhones, but they required that customers buy the power adapter and cable separately if they wanted to take advantage of it.

However with the bundle, it means that Apple will make it default for users moving forwards. In fact it seems that the rumors could be true because Apple has since quietly discounted its USB-C to Lightning cable down from $25 to $19. While Apple does not mention why it has been discounted, it might not be a stretch to think that it could be in anticipation of the launch of the new charger.

Another possibility is that right now Apple’s laptops have pretty much done away with USB-A ports, which means that users who want to connect their iPhones or iPads need to get an adapter that converts USB-A to USB-C, or purchase this cable. By making it more affordable it seems that Apple is hoping that more of their customers will start using it.

Either way it’ll probably still be a while before we learn more about Apple’s new iPhones, but what do you guys think? Does this discount hint at a new fast charger in the future? For those who are interested in getting their hands on the cable, you can do so via Apple’s Online Store.

Intel Discloses ‘Variant 4’ Spectre-Like Vulnerability

Earlier this year it was revealed that there were security flaws discovered within Intel’s chipsets called Spectre and Meltdown. To Intel’s credit, the company has been pushing out patches meant to put an end to these particular vulnerabilities, but it seems that Intel’s problems aren’t quite over yet.

Together with Google and Microsoft, Intel has recently disclosed (via MacRumors) a new Spectre-like vulnerability called “Variant 4”. This isn’t Spectre but it is similar to how Spectre functioned, where it could take advantage of the speculative execution mechanism of a CPU to allow hackers to potentially gain access to sensitive information on an affected device.

The good news is that this has been classified as a “moderate” severity because according to Intel, the exploits that Variant 4 uses have already been addressed through various mitigations that software makers and OEMs have used to patch Meltdown and Spectre. However this doesn’t mean that Intel will ignore it as the company is planning to release a full mitigation option that will prevent it from being used in other ways.

According to Intel, “This mitigation will be set to off-by-default, providing customers the choice of whether to enable it. We expect most industry software partners will likewise use the default-off option. In this configuration, we have observed no performance impact. If enabled, we’ve observed a performance impact of approximately 2 to 8 percent based on overall scores for benchmarks like SYSmark(R) 2014 SE and SPEC integer rate on client1 and server2 test systems.”

Lawmaker Introduces Crowdfunding Bill To Pay For Trump’s Border Wall

So Mexico’s not paying for it?

Variant 4 vulnerability: Spectre continues to haunt Intel

2018 immediately started off on the wrong foot for Intel and, consequently, the computing industry at large. Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities plagued modern processors, mostly from Intel but also from its rivals, even on some ARM chips. They can never be fully fixed without an entirely new CPU architecture, so all we’re left with are mitigations to lessen the probability … Continue reading

Google Maps For iOS Lets Users Choose From New Vehicle Icons

If you’ve used Google Maps on iOS for navigation, you might be familiar with the arrow icon that is used to depict the user on the map. However it looks like Google is changing things up by giving users more customization options in the form of vehicle icons, where users can now choose which vehicle they want in place of the arrow.

According to Google, “There’s now a new way to customize your drive on Google Maps for iOS. Depending on your mood, you can swap out the classic blue navigation arrow for a new icon—a stylish sedan, a timeless pickup truck, or a speedy SUV. Get started by tapping on the arrow while in driving navigation mode to select your vehicle of choice, and hit the road with a brand new car, so you can have that new car feeling without the down payment.”

It’s not a particularly huge change but like we said, if you do use Google Maps frequently on iOS and want to shake things up a bit, these customization options should help keep things fresh and new. These new options should already be live so if you are an iOS user, you’ll want to make sure that you have the latest version of Google Maps installed to be able to check it out.

To access new icons, all you need to do is select your destination, start the navigation, and tap the arrow icon in which a menu will be brought up showing users the different icons that they’ll be able to choose from.

Netflix Signs The Obamas For A Multi-Year Picture Deal

There is no doubt many who are curious as to what the former President of the United States Barack Obama and his family are up to these days. This is why there have been rumors swirling around that companies such as Apple, Amazon, and Netflix are looking to sign him and his family to their network.

For those who are subscribed to Netflix, you’ll be pleased to learn that the deal is official as the company has announced that they have signed both Barack Obama and Michelle Obama to a multi-year deal which includes films and series, both scripted and unscripted, as well as docu-series and/or documentaries.

No additional details were shared, such as when these series might launch or what they might be about specifically, so we guess we’ll just have to wait. What makes this interesting is like we said, there were reports that Amazon and Apple were also interested in signing the Obamas to a picture deal, and the fact that Netflix beat them to the punch is a pretty huge coup for him.

In fact there might have been signs in the past that suggested that Netflix could have been close, based on a report from back in March earlier this year.

Instagram Testing ‘You’re All Caught Up’ Feature

It’s easy to see why Instagram can be a black hole for productivity, where users can spend hours a day scrolling through it. This is because there are so many ways to entertain yourself, such as browsing your own feed and seeing posts from people you follow, or exploring new posts from other users, watching Stories, live streams, and more.

However it seems that Instagram is hoping to help cut your addiction with a new feature called “You’re all caught up”. Basically this is a message/notification that Instagram users will see once they’ve managed to scroll through all posts from the past 48 hours, meaning that Instagram is letting you know that you’re done for the day.

Sure, you could keep browsing if you wanted to, but like we said this lets users know that they are done in a bid to promote digital health where users don’t spend hours on end of social media. However note that this feature seems to be in testing which means that it’s not available to all users yet.

TechCrunch has since confirmed it with Instagram but have declined to elaborate further on the feature or if it will be rolled out to all users eventually, but it seems like a good idea and we’re sure that there are probably a few users who might be able to appreciate it.
