Google Maps For iOS Lets Users Choose From New Vehicle Icons

If you’ve used Google Maps on iOS for navigation, you might be familiar with the arrow icon that is used to depict the user on the map. However it looks like Google is changing things up by giving users more customization options in the form of vehicle icons, where users can now choose which vehicle they want in place of the arrow.

According to Google, “There’s now a new way to customize your drive on Google Maps for iOS. Depending on your mood, you can swap out the classic blue navigation arrow for a new icon—a stylish sedan, a timeless pickup truck, or a speedy SUV. Get started by tapping on the arrow while in driving navigation mode to select your vehicle of choice, and hit the road with a brand new car, so you can have that new car feeling without the down payment.”

It’s not a particularly huge change but like we said, if you do use Google Maps frequently on iOS and want to shake things up a bit, these customization options should help keep things fresh and new. These new options should already be live so if you are an iOS user, you’ll want to make sure that you have the latest version of Google Maps installed to be able to check it out.

To access new icons, all you need to do is select your destination, start the navigation, and tap the arrow icon in which a menu will be brought up showing users the different icons that they’ll be able to choose from.

Epic To Back Fortnite eSports Tournaments With $100 Million In Prize Money

Even before Fortnite Battle Royale launched on mobile, it was a pretty big game, and launching it on mobile simply made it even bigger with reports that Epic Games made $25 million in revenue just from the iOS version alone. Safe to say that Fortnite is here to stay and Epic wants to encourage more competitive play.

So much so that they have announced that they will be backing eSports tournaments based around the game with a prize pool of $100 million. Of course it will be distributed across the various tournaments that take place within the 2018-2019 season, but it’s still a lot of money that Epic is committing to the game.

According to the company, “Since the launch of Fortnite Battle Royale we’ve watched the passion for community competition grow and can’t wait to empower you to battle with the best. In the 2018 – 2019 season, Epic Games will provide $100,000,000 to fund prize pools for Fortnite competitions. We’re getting behind competitive play in a big way, but our approach will be different – we plan to be more inclusive, and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game.”

Epic’s commitment is also the largest as far as eSports are concerned. Considering the money that Valve raises for DotA 2 every year for The International, you would think that DotA 2 might have the most, but according to Esports Earnings, Valve was estimated to have spent $38 million across 159 tournaments last year, so for Epic to go all out with $100 million is a pretty huge deal.

Researchers Create Robots That Can Complete Tasks By Observing Humans

There are always jokes about how robots could one day replace humans at their jobs. However there is a simple solution to this, and that is to simply not make these robots in the first place. Unfortunately it looks like it’s not as straightforward as that, thanks to the efforts of NVIDIA and a team of researchers who have developed a deep learning system that basically lets robots learn how to complete tasks simply by observing a human.

The idea isn’t so much about robots taking over our jobs, but more about letting humans and robots communicate with each other better and allow both of them to work side-by-side seamlessly at the workplace. According to the researchers, “For robots to perform useful tasks in real-world settings, it must be easy to communicate the task to the robot; this includes both the desired result and any hints as to the best means to achieve that result.”

They add, “With demonstrations, a user can communicate a task to the robot and provide clues as to how to best perform the task.” This means that robots can be used to observe how a human does a task to complete it, after which the human operator can leave the robot to its own devices while they go off and do something else. You can check out the efforts of the research at NVIDIA’s website, or watch the video above to see it in action.

LG G7 Pre-Orders Reportedly Surpass That Of The LG G6 In South Korea

A recent report has suggested that Samsung’s latest flagship, the Galaxy S9 and S9+, haven’t done as well as its predecessor. The report claims that the handset only recently crossed the 1 million mark in South Korea, taking longer than expected. It’s hard to pinpoint the reason why, but whatever the reason was, LG doesn’t seem to have that issue.

According to a report from Korean publication ET News, it seems that the LG G7 has actually surpassed the LG G6 in pre-orders, at least as far as the South Korean market is concerned. The report claims that pre-orders for the handset has managed to hit 70,000 units versus 40,000 of the LG G6 last year, indicating that the LG G7’s pre-orders are nearly double that of its predecessor.

No doubt this is great news for LG, although whether or not they’ll manage to hit a million units sold remains to be seen, but it does seem like a great start. It is unclear as to why the LG G7 is a bigger hit than its predecessor, but we’re thinking that the full screen design might have played a role in that, along with its updated hardware specs.

In the meantime carriers in the US have started to take pre-orders for the LG G7 so it will be interesting to see if the phone is just as well-received in the US as South Korea.
