Comcast is leaking the names and passwords of customers’ wireless routers

Comcast has just been caught in a major security snafu: revealing the passwords of its customers’ Xfinity-provided wireless routers in plaintext on the web. Anyone with a subscriber’s account number and street address number will be served up the Wi-Fi name and password via the company’s Xfinity internet activation service.

Security researchers Karan Saini and Ryan Stevenson reported the issue to ZDnet.

The site is meant to help people setting up their internet for the first time: ideally, you put in your data, and Comcast sends back the router credentials while activating the service.

The problem is threefold:

  1. You can “activate” an account that’s already active
  2. The data required to do so is minimal and it is not verified via text or email
  3. The wireless name and password are sent on the web in plaintext

This means that anyone with your account number and street address number (e.g. the 1425 in “1425 Alder Ave,” no street name, city, or apartment number needed), both of which can be found on your paper bill or in an email, will instantly be given your router’s SSID and password, allowing them to log in and use it however they like or monitor its traffic. They could also rename the router’s network or change its password, locking out subscribers.

This only affects people who use a router provided by Xfinity/Comcast, which comes with its own name and password built in. Though it also returns custom SSIDs and passwords, since they’re synced with your account and can be changed via app and other methods.

What can you do? While this problem is at large, it’s no good changing your password — Comcast will just provide any malicious actor the new one. So until further notice all of Comcast’s Xfinity customers with routers provided by the company are at risk.

One thing you can do for now is treat your home network as if it is a public one — if you must use it, make sure encryption is enabled if you conduct any private business like buying things online. What will likely happen is Comcast will issue a notice and ask users to change their router passwords at large.

Another is to buy your own router — this is a good idea anyway, as it will pay for itself in a few months and you can do more stuff with it. Which to buy and how to install it, however, are beyond the scope of this article. But if you’re really worried, you could conceivably fix this security issue today by bringing your own hardware to the bargain.

I’ve contacted the company for comment and will update when I hear back.

Google Photos Now Lets Users Favorite Individual Photos

Given how many photos we tend to take with our phones and cameras, it’s easy to amass hundreds if not thousands of photos over the years. This means that going back in our archives, it can be difficult to try and look for our favorite photos. However if you’re using Google Photos, that could change.

This is because Google has started to roll out a new Favorites feature which basically lets users “star” images that they like, following which they will be added to a Favorites folder for easy access. Of course we imagine that over time this folder will get quite populated, but we suppose it’s easier than trawling through thousands of photos.

The favorites feature was actually spotted back in April in an APK teardown so we suppose it was only a matter of time before it was rolled out to users. Note that making certain photos a “favorite” isn’t the only way to sort them. We’ve seen how Google has been using AI to help identify photos, which means that users will also be able to search for photos based on type and location, assuming that it can be easily classified.

In addition, Google Photos also announced that soon users will be able to “heart” photos shared by their friends, which in a way lets users acknowledge that they’ve seen them.

Siri Could Be Getting New Voice Options At WWDC 2018

With WWDC 2018 coming up in a few weeks, we’re sure many are wondering what Apple could announce at the event. While we suppose we can expect to learn more about new major updates to iOS and macOS, it seems that Siri could be getting some new features as well, namely more voice options.

As it stands Siri’s voice options are somewhat limited but in a report from The Apple Post, it appears that Siri could be getting a new voice at WWDC 2018. This was revealed when the publication asked Siri about Apple’s upcoming event, in which the digital assistant replied by saying that she would be getting a brand new voice which will most likely be part of the iOS 12 release.

Considering that Google also unveiled new voice options for Google Assistant during I/O 2018, and Amazon giving developers more voice flexibility, we suppose it doesn’t come as a complete surprise to learn that Apple could be doing the same. Also what’s interesting is that when prompted further, Siri revealed that she would be getting a “shiny new home”, hinting that a new HomePod could be unveiled as well.

We have heard rumors that Apple could be planning a more affordable version of the HomePod and more recently, those rumors claim that it could be a $200 Beats-branded version of the HomePod. It is unclear if this is what Siri was referring to but we guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Coach Unveils New Apple Watch Bands For The Summer

Just like what you’d expect from a fashion brand, Coach has released several different Apple Watch bands sometimes to coincide with the seasons. If you’re looking for a new Apple Watch band that you can wear this summer, you might be interested to learn that Coach has since unveiled some new options for their customers.

This includes the strap with the Heart Applique for those who want a brighter and unique look, the strap in Signature Canvas for a more sombre look, and a strap offered in saddle for a very simple and minimalist look. As for pricing, given the Coach branding we guess it’s not surprising that they don’t exactly come cheap, with the straps ranging from $150 to $175.

In addition to the new bands, it seems that there will also be new color options offered to existing bands. This includes light blue, black with blue flowers and denim. All the straps are compatible with the existing Apple Watch models, although some are only limited to either the 38mm or 42mm Apple Watch sizes, so do keep that in mind.

As Haute Ecriture notes, these bands are sort of limited as with every new release, Coach tends to remove some of the older models, so if you’re thinking about it, you might want to move fast lest your particular choice is sold out.
