Acer Launches First Laptops With Alexa Baked In

Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant is quickly finding its way into PCs. Not long after HP announced the first all-in-one PC to come with Alexa baked in out of the box, Acer today launched a new lineup of laptops which it says are the first to ship with Alexa. Acer’s new Spin 3 and Spin 5 laptops are now available for purchase through retailers and both feature Alexa at launch. The Nitro 5 Spin convertible will also come with Alexa which it’s released next month.

Alexa on PCs works the same way that it does on any other Alexa-enabled device. Users will be able to use their voice commands to ask Alexa about the weather, manage smart home devices, make entries in their calendar, create lists, play their music, and more.

All of Acer’s compatible products are enabled by Intel Smart Sound Technology which is an integrated audio digital signal processor that’s built to handle audio, voice, and speech interactions. The Acer Spin 5 in particular feature Acer Purified Voice with four digital microphones having support for far-field voice recognition. Other models have dual microphones and near-field voice recognition.

The company has also revealed that it’s going to rollout Alexa on select Aspire, Switch, and Swift notebooks in addition to select all-in-one PCs over the next few weeks. Those who already have a compatible model will receive the Alexa update through the Acer Care Center in a couple of days.

T-Mobile LG G7 ThinQ Price And Release Date Confirmed

LG announced its new flagship smartphone the LG G7 ThinQ earlier this month and it can now get down to selling this smartphone. The company’s carrier partners in the United States initially confirmed that they would be selling the handset and now T-Mobile has confirmed the pricing and release date for the LG G7 ThinQ on its network.

LG has only started selling the device in its home country of South Korea so far. Initial reports have suggested that the LG G7 ThinQ pre-orders have performed much better compared to the LG G6 last year. The company will certainly be hoping that this remains the case in other markets as well.

T-Mobile confirmed today that it’s going to start selling the LG G7 ThinQ on June 1st with pre-orders opening on May 25th at 8 AM ET. Customers who want to pick one up will have to pay $30 down and $30 per month for 24 months on the carrier’s Equipment Installment Plan. The full retail price is $750.

The carrier is going to offer customers a special deal when pre-orders open later this week. Customers who purchase two units of the new device will be able to get the second one for free through 24 monthly bill credits. T-Mobile also points out that it’s going to be the only carrier in the country to offer the handset in Raspberry Rose color.

Chrome OS Launcher May Let Users Search Android App Shortcuts

Google may not have plans to fuse Android and Chrome OS but the former’s influence on the latter has been increasing gradually. It has long been possible to run Android apps on Chrome OS and it even supports the entire Google Play Store now. Google has also started testing Android P on Chrome OS even though it didn’t release Android Oreo for Chromebooks. Some new code has now been discovered which suggests that the Chrome OS launcher may allow users to search for Android app shortcuts.

A recent commit on the Chromium Gerrit reveals that the Chrome OS launcher will be able to search for app shortcuts within the launcher. Google introduced app shortcuts for Android with Android 7.1 Google.

App developers can use the shortcuts to easily take users to a specific menu or feature within the app without additional steps. So users can just press and hold down on the app icon and then use the relevant app shortcut.

Google did confirm at I/O 2018 earlier this month that Chrome OS will support app shortcuts with Android P. This means that Chrome OS will actually let users search for shortcuts in the launcher even before Android itself so users can simply type “new tab,” for example, in the launcher and then select that particular shortcut to quickly open Chrome with a new tab.

This new feature will likely appear in a Chrome OS canary build in the next few weeks.
