OSSIC X 3D audio headphone dream is no more

Crowdfunding is always a risky venture, both for the creators as well as the backers. Being successfully funded, even raising three to five to ten times the goal, is never an assurance that the promised product will be delivered. The bigger the ambition, the bigger the risks and the OSSIC X is definitely a big one. It promised to do … Continue reading

Google Maps Now Asking Users To Name & Rate Their Food

While Yelp might be seen as the de facto platform when it comes to restaurant reviews, Google has also implemented something similar into Google Maps where users can leave behind reviews and photos of the places that they have visited. Now it looks like Google is stepping things up by making its reviews a bit more comprehensive.

According to a report from Ausdroid, it appears that Google Maps is now displaying additional prompts for users who are uploading photos of food at the cafes that they visit. Like we said, prior to this users could already upload photos of their food and experience, but now these additional prompts are basically asking users to rate their orders and to name them, just in case other users might want to order them in the future.

Alternatively it can also be used so that users can avoid a particular dish, for example due to it not tasting as good, or pointing out that certain foods might come with ingredients that might be allergic to some, such as containing nuts of any kind. Google is also attempting to use its photo recognition feature as based on the photo you’ve uploaded, Google will then offer some autocomplete suggestions, which according to the folks at Ausdroid did a pretty decent job at identifying for some food items.

Following the naming of the dish, users are then asked to give it a thumbs up or thumbs down. It sounds like it could be a potentially useful feature so if you do contribute to Google Maps on occasion, it could be worth checking out.

Resident Evil 7 Launching On The Nintendo Switch Via Cloud Streaming

Early last year before the Nintendo Switch was officially released, there were some who were wondering if Capcom’s latest installment in the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil 7, would be coming to the Switch. Capcom responded in a resounding no but it now looks like they might have had a change of heart, sort of.

Capcom has recently announced and launched a trailer for Resident Evil 7: Cloud Version. This is basically Resident Evil 7 for the Nintendo Switch but as the names suggests, this won’t be the regular version of the game. Instead it will be Resident Evil 7 streamed via the Ubitus cloud service which means that players who want to play the game will require an always-on internet connection.

It will also cost gamers 2,000 yen for access up to 180 days, and presumably gamers who want to keep playing behind 180 days will need to buy it again. We suppose in a way this is cheaper than buying it in full, especially if you’re not the type that replays games and finishes them in a relatively short amount of time.

However the downside is that you don’t get to keep the game and if you’re internet is down or having some issues, you won’t be able to play it. It’s an interesting approach and one we have to wonder if other developers will consider for the future. The game is currently set for a release in Japan on the 24th of May, 2018 and will give gamers 15 minutes of free play time before they make their decision.

UK Government To Pledge Millions To Develop AI That Can Diagnose Brain Cancer

Sometimes with medical diagnosis, it can come too late where upon detection, it might already be too late for the patient to be cured. However in recent times we’ve started to see how AI can be used to help improve on diagnosis, where some researchers have developed AI that can detect things like bowel cancer in minutes.

Now over in the UK, it seems that AI for use in the medical industry is getting a boost by the government, where Prime Minister Theresa May will pledge millions of pounds of government funding to help develop AI that is capable of diagnosing brain cancer and other chronic diseases at an early stage, hoping that by detecting them early, it will result in avoidable deaths.

In a speech made by the Prime Minister, she was quoted as saying, “Late diagnosis of otherwise treatable illnesses is one of the biggest causes of avoidable deaths. The development of smart technologies to analyse great quantities of data quickly and with a higher degree of accuracy than is possible by human beings, opens up a whole new field of medical research and gives us a new weapon in our armoury in the fight against disease.”

It is thought that with the use of AI, it could in theory prevent 22,000 deaths from cancer each year by 2033. However it seems that there are some concerns raised by this funding, as it would allow commercial firms to access NHS data for profit, leading some to question the ethics surrounding data sharing, privacy, and so on.
