UK Plans On Introducing Internet Safety Laws In The Next Few Years

Several years ago as part of their bid to make the internet “safer”, ISPs in the UK announced that they would begin filtering out porn by default. The idea behind it was to prevent minors from accidentally stumbling across such content while on the internet, although as we have seen, even some of the best algorithms have trouble keeping up.

Now it looks like they’ll be taking it further by introducing internet safety laws that are expected to be put into place in the next few years. This was announced by the country’s Digital Secretary Matt Hancock (via Engadget) in which according to their goal, will make the UK the safest place in the world to be online.

These new laws are expected to tackle various issues that we’ve been seeing on the internet for a while now, such as cyberbullying, child exploitation, extremism, and so on. The UK government is also expected to publish a white paper later this year that will set out the legislation, which will be done with the help of various ministries in the government, charities, as well as input from the public.

According to Hancock, “People increasingly live their lives through online platforms so it’s more important than ever that people are safe and parents can have confidence they can keep their children from harm. The measures we’re taking forward today will help make sure children are protected online and balance the need for safety with the great freedoms the internet brings just as we have to strike this balance offline.”

2019 Call of Duty Could Be ‘Modern Warfare 4’

2018’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was only just announced last week, but it seems that rumors are already swirling around what could be in store for gamers come 2019.  According to a report from Matthew Harris of Gaming INTEL, it seems 2019’s Call of Duty will be none other than Modern Warfare 4.

This is actually not the first time that there has been speculation regarding Modern Warfare 4. A couple of months ago voice actor Craig Fairbrass seemed to have listed four different Modern Warfare games on his Twitter bio, leading to speculation that he might have accidentally revealed that a fourth Modern Warfare title is in the works.

Fairbrass took to Twitter to try and dispel the rumors, indicating that the fourth Modern Warfare game he worked on was Modern Warfare Remastered, but as Gaming INTEL points out, the game is essentially a reworking of the original and wouldn’t need new voice acting, right? Their sources have also suggested that unlike Black Ops 4 which has done away with the single-player campaign, Modern Warfare 4 is expected to come with it, and that a Battle Royale mode is also being considered.

It has been about 7 years since the release of Modern Warfare 3 so we guess the series is long overdue for a new game, so it’s not exactly surprising if Modern Warfare 4 is indeed in the works, but since this is a rumor, it’s probably best to take it with a grain of salt for now.

AT&T LTE-M Button: general-purpose Amazon Dash for businesses

Amazon has made some rather odd devices in the past, from the terrible flop that was the Fire Phone to the suspicious fashionista Echo Look. But one strange product that seems to have somewhat survived is the Dash button. A one-click device primarily designed to make it easy for Amazon users to order one type of product, the Dash concept … Continue reading

Teen phone tracking app exposed thousands of Apple accounts

iOS Developers Form A Union To Get Apple To Improve The App Store

If Apple did not have as many iPhones and iPads in the market as they do now, the walled garden approach they have towards iOS apps probably wouldn’t work,  but it does simply because developers know that there is money to be made by developing apps for iOS users, and they have no choice but to comply with Apple’s rules if they hope to make it.

However just because they agree to these rules doesn’t mean that they’re happy about it, so much so that a small group of developers have recently banded together to form what they are calling The Developer Union. It seems that they are hoping that by working together as a collective, they will be able to convince Apple to make some changes to the App Store to help allow them to make a better living off it.

One of the changes that the developers are asking for is for Apple to allow developers to offer free trials for users. This is something that even iOS users have been asking for, so it is unclear as to why Apple has resisted that feature. “Today, we are asking Apple to publicly commit — by the tenth anniversary of the App Store this July — to allowing free trials for all apps in the App Stores before July 2019.”

When asked why is free trials the first agenda on the list, the union says, “Free trials are a great place to start and gather the momentum needed to create significant change. Trials allow developers to show users their creation and establish value. Before iOS, Mac developers relied heavily on free trials, and they were able to make a living while making great software.”

They also state that following that, they are hoping to have a conversation with Apple regarding a more “reasonable revenue cut” and other developer-friendly changes. Whether or not Apple will listen remains to be seen, but so far at least 407 apps have publicly announced their support for the cause.

AT&T Takes On Amazon’s Dash Button With The LTE-M Button

When Amazon first launched its Dash buttons, it almost seemed like an April Fools joke. However it seems that the Dash buttons have proven to be a success, allowing customers to order items at a press of a button without having to go through the process of loading up the website, checking it out, and so on.

However it seems that AT&T also wants in on the action and have since launched what they are calling the LTE-M button. However it should be noted that unlike Amazon’s Dash buttons which are aimed at consumers, AT&T’s LTE-M button is aimed more towards businesses/developers who want to create their own button for their own products/services.

One of the advantages that AT&T is promising is that it does not need WiFi for it to work, because as the name has probably given it away, the button will be powered by LTE. This means that it will in theory offer more flexibility in terms of usage and placement. For example it could be installed in public locations where it could be used to call a taxi or an Uber, request for help, and so on.

It is an interesting piece of gadgetry and we can’t wait to see who will be picking it up. Also as you can see, it is powered by Amazon’s AWS so it seems that the company still wins, even against a competitor.
