Bank Of America Launches Erica, Its Own AI Assistant

Bank of America has a lot of mobile customers, over 25 million to be precise, and they will now be able to experience a new kind of service through Erica, the bank’s very own artificial intelligence-powered virtual assistant. Bank of America actually started rolling out Erica back in March. It enables customers to perform banking tasks through voice commands, texts, and even gestures in the Bank of America mobile app.

The bank’s customers can use Erica to perform a wide variety of tasks such as looking through past transactions, viewing bills and lining up payments, finding information about the closest ATM and routing numbers, locking and unlocking debit cards, and more.

Since the assistant is powered by artificial intelligence, its knowledge of banking and financial services increases with each client interaction.

“In time, Erica will have the insights to not only help pay a friend or list your transactions at a specific merchant, but also help you make better financial decisions by analyzing your habits and providing guidance,” says Aditya Bhasin, the head of consumer and wealth management technology at Bank of America.

In the coming months, Erica will be able to send proactive notifications to clients about upcoming bills and payments, identify ways for them to save more, manage credit and debit cards and notify about card changes, highlight upcoming subscription charges and more.

Bank of America says that it has now started rolling out Erica broadly across the country and that the rollout will continue through next month.

President Trump Reportedly Wants Double Postal Rates For Amazon

It was reported in March this year that President Trump is no friend of Amazon with one source even saying that the president is “obsessed” with the company. He reportedly wants to go after the company and is believed to have discussed possibly altering Amazon’s tax treatment. A new report claims that the Trump has leaned on the U.S. Postal Service to double the package rates for Amazon.

Citing three unnamed sources, The Washington Post reported that President Trump has personally pushed the postmaster general to double the rates that Amazon has to pay to the U.S. Postal Service and other companies to ship its packages. It’s pertinent to mention here that The Washington Post is privately owned by Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon.

Postmaster General Megan Brennan was reportedly against the suggestion and that he told the president in private conversations last year and in recent months as well that package delivery rates are only set by contract and reviewed through an independent commission.

The report adds that the postmaster general also showed a set of slides to the president that highlighted the other companies besides Amazon that team up for deliveries to make the point that these partnerships have helped the Postal Service through its financial challenges.

A significant increase in parcel delivery rates would certainly cost Amazon billions which may lead to higher prices for customers. There has been no public comment on this story from Amazon or the White House for that matter.

Apple May Launch Cheaper, Beats-Branded HomePod For $199

Apple jumped on the smart speaker bandwagon not too long ago with the HomePod. It costs $350 and is quite a bit expensive than the other smart speakers but the company has sought to align the product with the Sonos’ of the world and not the Amazon Echos, in that it’s charging a premium for a better audio experience. However, if a new report is to be believed, the company reportedly wants to cater to customers who don’t want to spend as much on a speaker by launching a cheaper, Beats-branded HomePod speaker.

Amazon and Google have already established strong positions for themselves in the global smart speaker market. Apple is yet to confirm its sales figures for the HomePod but a recent report suggested that the company has shipped 600,000 units of the device in the first quarter of this year. The figure doesn’t reflect sales to end customers.

Word on the street is that Apple is considering the possibility of launching a cheaper HomePod speaker which may be priced at $199. The speaker may be Beats-branded as the brand itself is quite popular. Moreover, selling it as a Beats product would allow Apple to differentiate the two products in the market.

A cheaper version means that it wouldn’t have all of the features that the $350 HomePod does. It’s unclear at this point in time which features might be on the chopping block if Apple decides to go ahead with this product.

GeForce Now Goes Free For NVIDIA Shield

NVIDIA launched GeForce Now in 2015 after testing its GRID game streaming technology for a few years. As the name suggests, the service enables NVIDIA console owners to stream a variety of PC games provided that they have a good internet connection and are paying monthly for the service. There’s good news for GeForce Now members as the company has decided to make GeForce Now free for the NVIDIA Shield.

NVIDIA has sent out emails to subscribers confirming that the service is now free. The company says that it’s going to upgrade the GeForce Now service for subscribers over the next few months.

They will continue to have access to their membership titles during this time as well as the games they have purchased through the GeForce Now store. NVIDIA has stopped billing subscribers’ accounts for $7.99 per month from May 15th in order to make the transition to the free service as smooth as possible.

It’s unclear if GeForce Now has temporarily been made free or if this is a permanent move as NVIDIA hasn’t confirmed that. What the company has said is that it’s going to provide more information about this and the changes that it’s working on in the future.
